France: Suspected Islamism leads to closure of Koranic school in Antony

In Antony, the Prefect of Hauts-de-Seine has obtained a court order from the mayor to close a Koranic school suspected of Islamism for security reasons. According to him, the Alfoulk Institute promotes values that are contrary to the principles of the Republic.

A few days ago, the Alfoulk Institute, a Koranic school in Antony (Hauts-de-Seine), was still open. On its website, the institute presents itself as a cultural association that enables the learning of the Arabic language and the study of texts with the aim of spreading radical Islam.

Various teaching modules are presented. The school makes its position clear: ‘The courses are intended for Muslims and are open to women who take their place behind the men,’ the website states. ‘Islamic clothing is mandatory, which means that only the faces and hands of women may be visible.’

In order to attend classes, women also had to obtain permission from their husbands or fathers. For the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture, all these factors reflect the Islamist nature of this institution.

‘The Republic is based on equality between men and women,’ said Alexandre Brugère, Prefect of the Hauts-de-Seine department. Following an initial report in February 2025, Alexandre Brugère took up the issue at the beginning of October. A unit dedicated to combating Islamism and isolation from the community is being deployed on site. Investigators also found around fifteen breaches of safety regulations.

It was these shortcomings that led to the closure of the establishment on October 20, after Jean-Yves Sénant, mayor of the city of Antony, ordered it.
