The figures are dramatic: While the unemployment rate among Austrians is falling, it has risen by 11.6 percent among foreigners. It is particularly high among Syrians, Afghans and Chechens.

Economic momentum in Austria is weakening, causing unemployment to rise. At the end of May, there were 2.9 percent more people without a job compared with the same month last year. Unemployment had already risen slightly in April, after falling for more than two years before that. Looking only at people with Austrian citizenship, unemployment continues to fall, but among foreigners it rose by 11.6 percent, the newspaper “Die Presse” reported.

According to the report, 248,037 unemployed people were registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) in May, including 152,073 Austrians and 95,964 foreigners.

The unemployment rate among Syrians is particularly high. 37 percent – more than one in three – have no job. They are followed by Afghans (22 percent), Chechens (20 percent), Serbs (19 percent) and Turks (14 percent). Among Austrians, the rate is five percent. It should also be borne in mind that the rate only refers to those people who are actually registered as looking for work.
