Angela Merkel criticises tightening of border controls

Germany’s former Chancellor Angela Merkel has criticised the border policies of the new CDU-led government led by her former rival, Friedrich Merz.

The stricter border controls could lead to Europe “being destroyed”, she warned.

Migration proved a major issue in German elections, with Merz’s coalition government of Christian Democrats and Socialists introducing changes afterward to stiffen border checks and raise the bar for asylum seekers.

Merkel said she opposed these measures.

“I do not believe that we will be able to conclusively combat illegal migration on the German-Austrian or German-Polish borders,” Merkel said a Südwest Presse event in Bavaria’s town of Neu-Ulm May 21.

The former Chancellor was speaking to promote her autobiography Freedom, and discussed current events Südwest Presse’s editor in chief Ulrich Becker.

“I have always advocated European solutions,” she said, indicating the focus should lie on protecting the EU’s external borders.

Unilateral action by individual states could harm Schengen and freedom of movement in Europe, Merkel warned.

She pleaded for solutions to be sought within the European Union, regardless of urgency some felt in her country.

“Because otherwise we could see Europe being destroyed for us,” she said.

Others on Germany’s political Left also have criticised the Merz government’s current border policies.

Gabriele Bischoff, the EU parliamentary group vice-chairman of the Social Democrats, told the weekly magazine Der Spiegel “The first consequences of [interior minister] Dobrindt’s border controls are traffic jams, frustration and delays. These measures send a devastating signal to cross-border commuters.”

On the Right, people were less impressed.

Bernd Baumann, chief whip of the right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD) in the Bundestag, called Dobrindt’s plan a “great deception”.

Immediately after the new government was formed in Germany, Merkel said she was “pleased” with the coalition agreement and was positive about the migration policies of the new administration.

“After reading it carefully, I saw that border rejections are to be carried out in coordination with our European neighbours,” Merkel said.

“That’s exactly what I always advocated for — it’s what law and order demands,” she said at the time.

Germany: 13-year-old Arab stabs his classmate in Berlin, hours later an 11-year-old Iraqi stabs his classmate in North-Rhine Westphalia

Remix News has dedicated ample coverage to the deteriorating German school system, including the rise of extreme violence. Yesterday highlighted this trend, with two students brutally stabbed hours apart in different locations.

In Berlin’s multicultural Spandau neighborhood, a 13-year-old Arab student stabbed his German classmate yesterday and remains on the run. 

Identified as Alan-Said Ibrahim, the youth stabbed his victim with a kitchen knife multiple times at around 11;30 a.m. at the Weinmeisterhorn elementary school, after they became engaged in an argument in the school’s locker room, according to Berlin Kurier.

The victim was bleeding from his neck and nearly lost his life. He ran from the locker room covered in blood, with one hand pressed to his throat. The knife suspect fled and remains on the run, with police warning he is potentially armed and dangerous.

The victim was treated at an emergency room and his condition is now stable.

There is a large-scale manhunt underway, including in other German states such as Lower Saxony, where the boy has family. A homicide squad is investigating as well.

The suspect has dual U.S. and German citizenship, but numerous reports indicate he is Arab, which is confirmed by his Arab name.

Police have released two photos of the suspect. He is 1.70 meters tall, has short brown hair, and a strong build. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, light blue jeans, and black shoes.

He then lists a number of demands, including, “zero tolerance for violence in schools and clear consequences even for minors,” as well as “repatriation of conspicuous repeat offenders who are denied the right to remain.”

Since the alleged perpetrator and the victim are both German citizens, this knife attack will be counted as a German perpetrator in the crime statistics.

Iraqi stabbing attack

That was not the only school stabbing attack in Germany yesterday. In downtown Remscheid, an 11-year-old Iraqi child stabbed a 13-year-old German boy with a kitchen knife after they argued in school.

The two had earlier argued and arranged a fight after school. The migrant, however, did not use fists, After the 13-year-old punched him, the Iraqi pulled out a kitchen knife. He stabbed his opponent twice in the leg with full force and then fled the scene.

The seriously injured victim was transported to the hospital and treated but did not suffer from life-threatening injuries.

The Iraqi student was arrested near his parent’s home, and since he is only 11, he will not face any criminal charges. Only those over 14 can be prosecuted.

In fact, he is already back with his parents, with the Youth Welfare Office deciding to release him after deciding against placing him in a juvenile detention facility. The parents have also been watched by the Youth Welfare Service for incidents in the past.

Spanish PM Slams Israel Abroad—While His Brother Stands Trial at Home

Always keen to be at the forefront of Europe’s criticism of Israel’s war against Hamas, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez has travelled to Turkey today, May 23rd, where he and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will likely pat each other on the back for supporting the wider recognition of a Palestinian state.

The Socialist leader is never shy when it comes to bashing Israel, and even received praise from Hamas shortly after October 7th when he started being more vocal about a Palestinian state. But he is likely to be especially pleased about the distraction from national politics this week, given a judge’s decision on Thursday to send David Sánchez—the prime minister’s brother—to trial for corruption.

Tax investigators have been scratching their heads for some time to understand how David came to acquire €1.7 million worth of assets. Unfortunately for Pedro, Spanish newspapers are today far more interested in this affair than in his visit to the Arab world.

Spanish foreign minister José Manuel Albares has gloated that “no one does as much for peace in the Middle East as Spain.” Unsurprisingly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sees the situation differently and has long accused Sánchez and his government of supporting terrorism.

Sánchez now reportedly hopes to become a mediator between Europe and the Arab world and is building on his and Erdoğan’s shared views surrounding Palestine to achieve this role. This has prompted criticism at home, including from Partido Popular leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who said the prime minister was using the Gaza situation in “his favour” to distract from domestic troubles.

Likewise, the Socialist was the only European leader to attend the 2025 Arab League summit in Baghdad last week, where he announced that Spain would raise two new anti-Israeli proposals at the next United Nations General Assembly meeting.

UK: Trans police officers banned from strip-searching women as campaigners celebrate scrapping of ‘abominable policy’

Transgender police officers have been banned from carrying out strip-searches on female detainees under new guidance issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).

The directive stipulates that trans officers and staff can no longer conduct intimate or strip searches on detainees of the opposite sex.

Senior officers have been reviewing the implications of last month’s UK Supreme Court judgment in relation to the scope of the Equality Act on sex and gender.

The NPCC’s draft interim guidance makes clear that thorough police searches, such as those which expose intimate body parts, should be carried out by police officers of the same biological sex as the detained person.

The NPCC had been under pressure after it was revealed their diversity lead had told forces the organisation would “not rush” to make changes following the Supreme Court ruling.

In the absence of national guidance, forces had been permitting transwomen officers to strip-search detainees of the opposite sex on a “case-by-case basis.”

This prompted author JK Rowling to offer to fund legal action brought by women strip-searched by biological men who identify as women.

“So the police are dragging their heels on stopping males strip-searching females, which, as the Supreme Court ruling confirmed, was illegal all along,” she wrote on X.

The ban was welcomed by campaigners, including Maya Forstater, chief executive of the human rights group Sex Matters, who said it was a relief the “abominable policy” had been scrapped.

Chief Constable Gavin Stephens, NPCC chairman, insisted the body had “moved at pace” to produce the policy.

He said they understood it was “important that officers and staff have guidance on how searches should be conducted in light of the Supreme Court ruling”.

However, Forstater was among those expressing alarm at a caveat in the guidance that would still allow opposite sex strip-searches in “very limited exceptions”.

While trans officers may no longer conduct such searches, the NPCC’s interim guidance still allows for trans detainees to request a search by someone who shares their gender identity.

This means a trans-identifying male could still be strip-searched by a female officer if both give written consent and an authorising officer approves.

Forstater warned the exception had “no legal basis” and added: “Female police officers should not be pressured or coerced into searching men who identify as women.”

Cathy Larkman, a retired superintendent and director of the Women’s Rights Network, called the exception “disturbing” and cited the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, which states officers “may not” conduct intimate or strip-searches on “a person of the opposite sex”.

The NPCC defended the new guidance, saying it is lawful and reflects existing practice.

A spokesman said: “The interim guidance is based on legal advice and has been developed after seeking views across policing as well as those of other agencies.

“It reflects working practice which already happens every day across policing, where officers and detainees make requests about searches for a multitude of reasons.”

87 miners ended up dying. Some turned to cannibalism. Others ate bugs.

Two survivors told The Telegraph that others were forced to turn to cannibalism, although they both insist they did not take part.

One of the men, who did not want to be named, said, “They cut parts of legs, arms, and ribs for sustenance. They decided it was their only remaining option for survival.”

“Instead of eating human flesh, the man says he and his colleague ate cockroaches to stay alive while trapped nearly a mile down into the earth. Other survivors have given similar accounts.”

Totalitarian African regimes, like Mugabe in Zimbabwe, end up killing far more black people than white people.

Cannes: Director Mathieu Kassovitz appeared to revel in the elimination of the French

On the sidelines of the Cannes film festival this week, prominent French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz declared that “there are no more native French people” and that he hopes the entire world will become mixed-race.

Director of the social justice-inspired Vincent Cassel film Hate, which depicted the supposed racism faced by immigrants at the hands of police and skinheads on the outskirts of Paris, Mathieu Kassovitz appeared to revel in the elimination of the French.

Appearing on the C à vous news programme alongside the Cannes film festival, Kassovitz declared in comments reported by Le Figaro: “We must be proud to be one of the most integrated countries in the world. It is one of our strengths, and that is what makes us French.

Now there are no more native French people, they no longer exist… I hope that we will continue to mix not only in France but also in the rest of the world,” the 57-year-old director added.

The comments have drawn comparisons to past statements made by his father and fellow film director Peter Kassovitz, a Hungarian who fled to France amid the revolution of 1956.

The elder Kassovitz previously commented on his son’s film Hate: “My son’s story is about a guy who wanted to be a big black guy when he’s a little white Jew.”

The comments are also reminiscent of those made by far-left former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Attacking the very concept of being ethnically French, the leftist leader said last year: “When I was born, one in ten French people had a foreign grandparent, now it’s one in four.

“Consequently, those who call themselves native French pose a serious problem to the cohesion of society.”

Responding to Kassovitz’s comments this week, French MEP and heir to the Le Pen political dynasty, Marion Marachél said: “I am a French woman by birth and I have no intention of disappearing.”

Are men really behind the crime problem? German statistics show foreign women are more violent

The constant refrain is that men in general are behind Germany’s crime problem and that foreign origin is secondary. However, current data shows the opposite is true.

Last year, Syrian women had higher rates, per 100,000 people suspected of violence, than German men.

The data shows that for 100,000 German men, 272 were suspected of a violent offense. For Syrian women, this figure per 100,00 was 336. Clearly, Syrian women were more violent than German men.

However, they are not the only group. Afghan women are also more violent, with a rate of 359, even more violent than Syrian women.

Iraqi women have an incredible rate of 394, which is considerably more than German men.

Even Serbian women are more violent than German men, with a rate of 371.

Bulgarian women are at 359.

For German women, only 60 are suspected of a violent crime per 100,000.

All of this data makes the left’s generalized argument about the “violent male” questionable at best. Although, German police, in the name of the left’s precious mantra of gender equality, did somehow manage to confiscate knives from elderly German women at Christmas markets.

There is no doubt that males are behind the violent crime surge overall, but as the data shows, this has a lot to do with only males from certain countries. These males are in the headlines every single day in Germany, including for a recent wave of knife crimes that have shocked the country.

If we compare Syrian men to German men, the figures are truly astounding. There are 2,608 violent suspects per 100,000 Syrian men. Again, German men are only at 272. That means Syrian men are approximately nine times more likely to commit a serious crime than German men.

Turkish men, with 904 suspects per 100,000 inhabitants, are more than three times as likely as German men to commit a violent crime.

Afghans have a rate of 2,409. Iraqis are at 2,479, Bulgarians at 1,353, and Serbians at 1,246.

However, the crown goes to Moroccan men, who have a rate of 3,388 suspects in the category of violent crime per 100,000.

This data was obtained from the Police Criminal Statistics (PKS) 2024 shows data for the so-called “suspect exposure number” (TVBZ) with regard to the age, gender and origin of suspects. This data describes how many suspects there were per 100,000 inhabitants of a certain group per crime, such as assault, based on criteria such as gender and foreign status, for specific years.

The data was released in response to a request from the federal government from AfD MP Martin Hess.

Romanian court rejects Simion’s request for annulment of elections

Romania’s Constitutional Court unanimously rejected George Simion’s request that the country’s presidential elections be annulled.

Meeting on May 22, the Constitutional Court, “debated the request for annulment of the elections for the office of President of Romania in the second round of elections on May 18, 2025, formulated by Mr. George-Nicolae Simion,” the court said in a statement.

Following the deliberations, the Constitutional Court unanimously “rejected the request” as “unfounded”, it said.

The decision is “final and shall be communicated to the Central Electoral Bureau”, it said.

It added its arguments in reaching the decision “will be published in the Official Gazette”.

With the ruling, the result of the presidential elections can now be validated, making Nicușor Dan the next Romanian president.

Dan told Romania’s media the cancellation petition by runner-up Simion was “completely artificial”.

“I think it was clear from the beginning to everyone that it was something complete, completely artificial. I haven’t seen the written one, but to say that hundreds of millions of euros were given in Moldova is totally unreasonable,” Dan said.

For his part, Simion called his request’s rejection a “continued coup d’état by the court”.

“All we have to do is fight! I call you to join me, today and in the coming weeks!”, the AUR president wrote on Facebook, adding there would be new elections soon.

While the Constitutional Court was debating Simion’s request, his party issued a press release, saying the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) and the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) both “refuse transparency and block the access of AUR specialists to verify the fairness of the elections”.

The party said those bodies had denied “access of a computer scientist appointed by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to the computer system for managing the electoral process, thus blocking any possibility of independent verification of the correctness of the vote.”

The AUR claimed personal numeric codes had been used multiple times, which could indicate fraud,. They said they also wanted to check if deceased people voted.

The court’s lack of transparency and unwillingness to hear their arguments proved the judges applied “double standards”, said the AUR.

The same Constitutional Court famously annulled the first round of the presidential election on December 6, 2024, based on what turned out to be comparatively flimsy allegations of Russian interference and electoral irregularities.

EU Sends Millions of Taxpayer Euros to ‘Propaganda Broadcaster’

The European Union has agreed to provide Radio Free Europe with 5.5 million euros’ worth of emergency funding just a couple of months after Donald Trump slashed the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) budget, which previously filled the Cold War relic’s coffers.

Top Brussels diplomat Kaja Kallas said that “in a time of growing, unfiltered content, independent journalism is more important than ever.” But AfD MEP Mary Khan previously highlighted that “an allegedly ‘independent’ radio station funded by the state [or, indeed, a collection of states] is a state organ and not a free press!”

While freedom of speech in the European Union is increasingly under pressure from left-wing projects like the Digital Services Act or publicly funded reporting centered against “hate and incitement,” the European Commission now wants to launch the next project for controlled opinion-making.

Austrian MEP Harald Vilimsky added on Wednesday that €5.5 million for the “propaganda broadcaster” was “a waste of money,” especially “while 40 million Europeans can’t afford heating.”

Nothing is too expensive for the system’s media organs.

The funding falls short of what Radio Free Europe requested but will help it tick over “for a short while longer,” according to its president, Stephen Capus. The organisation has also filed an emergency petition in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking its May funding.

Once hailed for its role in fighting Soviet oppression before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the broadcaster has since become known for spreading progressive ideology and anti-conservative messages.

Twitter/X owner Elon Musk said ahead of Trump’s slashing of funding that Radio Free Europe was now run by “radical Left crazy people talking to themselves.” Spanish MEP Hermann Tertsch (VOX/Patriots) also bashed the network for pushing “anti-national propaganda, gender ideology, or other toxic items of progressive politics, like socialism and communism … against the interests of European citizens.”
