Spanish Public TV To Air Election Result Only if Left Wins

Spain’s public television broadcaster plans to show the final results of an important local election this Sunday—but only if the Right loses its majority.

RTVE will air the results of Sunday’s Galician elections on its primary channel, La 1, but will switch to showing the movie Wonder Woman if it looks like the center-right Partido Popular (PP) has been re-elected. However, if the party is set to lose its majority—potentially ushering in a left-wing coalition—the coverage will continue.

The Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported the story, blaming a ratings war with a rival channel for the decision. However, the citizen’s group, Free TVE, which advocates for an editorially unbiased public broadcaster, has denounced the television station’s plan on X, accusing the station of “belittling” the Galician people and “covering up” a PP win.

Elections take place this Sunday in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. The region and the entire country will be watching the results closely as there is a possibility that the center-right Partido Popular (PP) will lose its long-standing majority rule in the region. Even if the PP faces a defeat of some nature, it remains to be seen exactly how the vote will split and who will be able to form a government.

For the Left, and particularly the governing socialist party PSOE, defeating the PP in the region would count as a victory. The PSOE, which finished second to the PP in last July’s elections, has gone to tremendous—possibly illegal—lengths to form the coalition that has allowed them to remain in power.
