Sanctuary cities arose in the U.S. as part of a Marxist effort to protect its allies in Latin America. They grew because the federal government would occasionally make some fitful effort to deport illegal aliens.
There hasn’t been a need for sanctuary cities in the UK because the government generally didn’t deport anyone and when it tried, the EU would step in and declare that deporting rapists, terrorists and terrorist rapists violated their ‘human rights’ which entitled them to stay in the UK regardless of whether they had any right to be there because sending them back home was unthinkable.
Then Brexit happened and more recently, PM Keir Starmer, in a desperate effort to turn around his approval ratings, began making big boy noises about deporting illegals. Nothing much happened. But the rise of the ‘Greens’, the UK equivalent of the DSA, an Islamist-Marxist alliance, as a viable opposition had them figuring out how to go further Left of open borders. And so…
Lewisham council could be the first in the UK to ban its administration from cooperating with the Home Office on immigration raids.
A motion is being debated today, which would commit the Green run council to systematically review its work with immigration enforcement and refuse to assist raids “wherever legally possible”.
The mayor of Lewisham, Liam Shrivastava says it is part of the council’s attempts to “protect our diverse communities from Labour’s anti-migrant onslaught.”
He told ITV News London:
“The motion makes very clear that we are London’s first borough of sanctuary, we’re very proud of that but we don’t just want to be a borough of sanctuary in name but also in practice.”
The motion further commits Lewisham to working with Lambeth and other Green-led councils to build an anti-raids “Sanctuary corridor” across London.
This would involve collaborating with migrant organisations, anti-raids networks, law centres, faith and community groups to share best practise and policies.
The American Left did give them a pretty comprehensive package of measures to copy. Lewisham is a borough in London with a 7.5% Muslim population and they clearly intend to go for 75%.
