The Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched a criminal investigation into a YouTuber over a video containing a Christian message critical of Islam. As reported by the news agency Idea, the investigation has been ongoing since February 2025. However, the case only came to light on Wednesday following Idea’s report.
The case concerns the YouTuber “Niko”, who runs the channel “Eternal Life” together with another Christian. The 42-year-old is accused of violating the ban on “insulting creeds, religious societies and ideological associations” under Section 166 of the Criminal Code.
According to Idea’s account, the proceedings relate to a video from 2024. In it, Niko sarcastically commented on images of demonstrators celebrating the massacre of Israeli civilians by the terrorist organisation Hamas on October 7, 2023, saying: “It’s 2024 and anti-Semitism is officially permitted again in Germany.”
He also commented on a news clip showing an Islamist demonstration in Germany: “This demonstration and this religion reveal something profound to us. They are a mirror of us as human beings. Because every person harbours hatred within them and is driven by desire. Every person wants power and wealth; that is why Jesus Christ came to die and rise again, thereby giving us his Spirit. […] It is through this Spirit that we can truly practise love, peace, kindness and goodness towards our neighbour.”
In the video, Nikos’s comrade-in-arms Tino stated, among other things: “Islam and the message behind it bring nothing but hatred, power and murder. This religion offers no peace, no joy and no life. They are fighting for a dead message and a dead God. They want to establish an earthly kingdom in this world.”
The Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to Idea that an investigation was underway, but declined to provide further details. In his statement to the investigators, Nikos’s lawyer called for the case to be dropped. He argued that the overall context of the video, as well as the YouTube channel and its content, clearly showed that Nikos was “concerned neither with incitement nor with denigration, but with the defence and promotion of his Christian faith”.
The issue of Islamic anti-Semitism, which the video addresses, is also being publicly discussed by officials, including the Berlin Police Commissioner and the Federal Agency for Civic Education. Furthermore, for an act to be punishable under Section 166 of the Criminal Code, a statement must objectively be capable of disturbing the peace. This is clearly not the case with this video.
The Christian Police Association (CPV), of which Niko is a member as a police officer, criticised the prosecution’s actions when asked by Idea. Its Federal Chairman, retired Chief Inspector Holger Clas, explained that the exceptionally long duration of the proceedings over statements that are clearly covered by the constitutionally protected freedom of expression was placing a considerable strain on his colleagues. “We cannot understand this at all. In my many years of practice, I am not aware of any case in which statements critical of the church have been prosecuted in this way. This gives the impression that double standards are being applied.”
The “Eternal Life” channel was launched in April 2024. The name refers to a verse from the Epistle to the Romans by the Apostle Paul, which reads: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) The most recent video to date was published in August 2025.
