According to Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer ( Christian Social Union, CSU), the German security authorities have been able to thwart almost two dozen terrorist attacks since the year 2000. “Our authorities have prevented 23 terrorist attacks since 2000,” Seehofer told the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the USA.At the same time, the Interior Minister emphasised that there is still a danger of attacks in Germany. “We have prevented terrorist attacks, but the danger of an attack still exists today.”According to a report in the newspaper “Tagesspiegel”, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) considers about 2000 Islamists in Germany to be particularly dangerous. “These are all those whom we, as an intelligence service, potentially believe to be capable of carrying out terrorist attacks,” the president of the BfV, Thomas Haldenwang, told the paper.The number is higher than that of Islamists who are classified by the police as dangerous persons, since the Office for the Protection of the Constitution can “classify dangerous persons as a risk even before they are potentially liable to prosecution”. The Federal Criminal Police Office, on the other hand, currently speaks of 551 Islamist threats and 536 “relevant persons”, i.e. potential supporters of terrorists.
