We should all say “Je suis Charlie Kirk”

by Giulio Meotti

And so we have arrived at murder broadcast live in a Western university.

On Wednesday, September 10, in a university campus in Utah, a single shot rang out, one that will echo for years in American and Western politics.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old father of two and a leading conservative activist in America, is yet another horrific scene in a country deeply poisoned by hate. Kirk was participating in an event in a courtyard at Utah Valley University when he was shot in the neck in front of thousands of people.

Kirk was a model of civility for his generation, someone who would even silence his own supporters to let his opponents speak. He leaves behind a wife, a three-year-old daughter, and a one-year-old son.

We will not hear any “Je suis Charlie Kirk”.

What a dark day for the free West and freedom of speech, on the eve of September 11.

A video like this has never before entered the annals of Western chronicles, and I fear it could trigger reactions in the opposite direction: the killing of cultural and political adversaries recalls dark times in Europe, from the 1920s and 1930s with Nazi-fascism to the years of leftist terrorism.

Kirk’s method was to show up on college campuses—the frontlines of the culture war—and welcome anyone who wanted to challenge him with questions and opposing views. He never backed down, prove me wrong his motto. He did this in the height of cancel culture and amid the worst howling campus mobs seeking to silence conservative speakers and “eradicate all of Western civilization.”

Kirk was conservative, white, pro-Israel, pro-life, faithful to the American ideal and against any revisionism, critical of Islam, and a declared enemy of woke ideology: in practice, a human target.

Kirk was committed to open debate. He knew the multicultural project had failed. He was aware that most Americans could not stand 24/7 control of opinions by the woke.

His assassination reminded me of that of David Amess, the British Conservative MP, Catholic, father of five, Eurosceptic, Brexiteer, pro-life and a member of the Conservative Friends for Israel (Amess was killed by an Islamist extremist).

Benjamin Netanyahu reacted as few other Western leaders did:

“Charlie Kirk was assassinated for speaking the truth and defending freedom. A lion-hearted friend of Israel, he fought against lies and stood up for Judeo-Christian civilization. I spoke with him just two weeks ago and invited him to Israel. Sadly, that visit will not take place. We have lost an incredible man. His boundless pride in America and his courageous faith in free speech will leave an indelible mark. Rest in peace, Charlie.”

Few dare to say it, but part of the Left has become the party of death. Kirk’s assassination may have been our last wake-up call.

Donald Trump has survived two assassination attempts. Republican Senator Steve Scalise took two bullets from an anti-Trump militant. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh narrowly escaped death. “I did it for Gaza,” said the woke terrorist to the police after killing two Israeli officials in Washington. And Luigi Mangione, who killed the head of an insurance company in New York, has become a modern hero for the woke.

The perpetrators of these attacks vary in their degree of mental illness and delusion, but Western society has progressively dismantled the civil and social barriers that once prevented disturbed minds from drifting away from civil norms, and it has poisoned all the wells.

Of the 67 million Americans in “Generation Z” (those born after 1996), 51 percent think America is “inextricably tied to white supremacy,” 41 percent support censorship of “hate speech,” and 66 percent support silencing speakers they consider “offensive.”

If these are the ideas of 67 million people, it is frightening.

Black Lives Matter, eco-extremists, transgender fanatics, pro-Hamas mobs, social avengers: the culture war has become civil war. Rejection has taken root throughout American culture, with administrations tearing down statues, colleges renaming buildings, publishers censoring and rewriting books.

When Harvard president Claudine Gay was asked in a Congressional hearing whether calls for the genocide of Jews violated the university’s rules on bullying and harassment, she answered: “It depends on the context.” One may take a life, if we deem them an ideological opponent.

Can those who refuse to join in the radical deconstruction of society by the woke no longer be guaranteed physical safety?

Technology has exacerbated our cupio dissolvi, and the West seems to have become a charging station for smartphones that drain psychic energy. There is a name for this: nihilism.

First moral violence, then symbolic violence and now physical violence. Words are weapons. Censorship is a method. Exclusion, the norm. All in the name of the “good”.

How the EU Pays Mainstream Media to Promote Its Narratives

The unelected leadership of the evidently corrupt European Union (EU) is now paying mainstream media to promote the agendas of its EU “elites.” The EU appears to have spent as much as 1 billion euros during the past decade alone in the process, according to a recent report, “Brussels’s media machine: European media funding and the shaping of public discourse,” by Thomas Fazi, from the European think tank MCC Brussels.

Framing the projects as “fighting disinformation” and “promoting European integration” the EU has been throwing taxpayer money, conservatively estimated at €80 million annually, to “media projects” — not including indirect funding, such as advertising contracts.

The report also shows that the EU runs a highly sophisticated “EU media complex” through which it gets to shape media narratives about itself and its agendas.

According to Fazi’s report:

“The European Commission – through its Journalism Partnerships programme alone, with a cumulative budget approaching € 50 million to date – oversees a vast ecosystem of EU media ‘collaborations.’ Over the years, these have included hundreds of projects, ranging from pro-EU promotional campaigns to questionable ‘investigative journalism’ initiatives and sweeping ‘anti-fake news’ efforts. And that’s on top of the advertorial campaigns funded through the Information Measures for the EU Cohesion policy (IMREG) programme, to the tune of € 40 million so far…

“Even more concerning is the central role played by major European public broadcasters in this process. These projects show that this is not a matter of one-off collaborations, but rather an evolving semi-structural relationship between EU institutions and public media networks.”

The European Commission has, it seems, has literally paid off almost everything and everyone in the media world — meaning that everyone, from news agencies to media outlets, public broadcasters and other media organizations, sits in the pocket of the European Commission to greater or smaller degrees. Some examples:

Among news agencies — upon which practically all news outlets depend for their reporting — the European Commission has poured money into the following, among others: Agence France-Presse has received €7 million from the EU, ANSA (Italy) €5.6 million, Deutsche Presse-Agentur, (Germany) €3.2 million, Agencia EFE (Spain) €2 million, Associated Press (AP) €1 million, Lusa News Agency (Portugal) €200,000 Polish Press Agency €500,000, and Athens News Agency €600,000.

A selection of news outlets also appear to be being paid off by the European Commission: Euronews (pan-European) €230 million, ARTE (France) €26 million, Euractiv (pan-European) €6 million, Gazeta Wyborcza (Poland) €105,000, 444.hu (Hungary) €1.1 million, France TV (France) €400,000, GEDI Gruppo Editoriale (Italy) €190,000, ZDF (Germany) €500,000, and Bayerischer Rundfunk (Germany) €600,000.

Public broadcasters have received the following: Deutsche Welle (Germany) €35 million, France Médias Monde €16.5 million, France Télévisions €1 million, RAI Radiotelevisione italiana (Italy) €2 million, RTBF (Belgium) €675,000, RTP (Portugal) €1.5 million, Estonian Public Broadcasting, ERR €1 million, RTVE (Spain) €770,000 ERR (Estonia) €1 million and TV2 (Denmark) €900,000.

Media organizations such as Reporters Without Borders (France) and Journalismfund Europe (Belgium) have received €5.7 million and €2.6 million respectively. A Dutch organization that calls itself independent, Bellingcat, has received €440,000.

These abundant examples of media and news organizations are just those within the EU. The EU, however, is also operating a large-scale influence operation outside of the EU, of course under the benign sounding propaganda words of “framed as support for media freedom and pluralism” – as if the EU knows the first thing about freedom and pluralism. The projects have centered especially on media in Ukraine, Armenia,  Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Belarus and the western Balkans.

There is nothing transparent about any of this funding. According to the report, it is opaque and difficult to uncover. It makes sense, however, that the EU would seek to cover up its own influence peddling as much as possible.

The report concludes:

“[T]he EU’s ever-expanding system of media financing… creates financial dependencies, incentivises narrative conformity and fosters an ecosystem in which dissenting voices are marginalised – all under the virtuous banners of ‘fighting disinformation’, ‘promoting European values’ and ‘building a European public sphere.’

“The extent of institutional entanglement between EU bodies and major media actors – from public broadcasters to news agencies to online outlets – cannot be brushed aside as harmless or incidental. It constitutes a systemic conflict of interest that compromises the media’s ability to function as an independent pillar of democracy. Even absent direct editorial interference, the structural dependency on EU grants and contracts is enough to exert a chilling effect on critical reporting and encourage a reflexive alignment with official EU positions.”

The EU appears, sadly, to be a deeply corrupt and undemocratic regime, which desperately clings to power through influence-peddling and the imposition of heavy-handed censorship. Hundreds of millions of Europeans continue to put up with these tactics. When will they please wake up?

UK: Man on Counter-Terror Watch List Arrested Outside Junior School While Brandishing Knife

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man brandishing a knife was arrested Thursday outside one of the UK’s leading preparatory schools.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the suspect now in detention “has appeared on a counter-terror watchlist in the past after expressing an interest in extremist Islamist ideology.”

The outlet reports police were called at around 8.10am on Thursday following reports a man had been spotted carrying a weapon close to Godstowe School in High Wycombe, 32 miles from central London.

The Telegraph outlined what happened next:

Officers from Thames Valley Police challenged the suspect, who tried to run away. They threatened him with their Tasers and were able to disarm and detain him before armed officers could be deployed.

He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of carrying a knife in a public place and taken into custody.

Police said it was too early to confirm whether the incident was being treated as a foiled terrorist attack, but the Telegraph understands the suspect has appeared on a counter-terror watchlist in the past after expressing an interest in extremist Islamist ideology.

The Telegraph further alleged the man has a “previous conviction for a child sex offence.”

Thames Valley Police have now promised an increased presence in the area and have appealed for anyone who witnessed the event to contact them.

Godstowe School was founded in 1900. It is a leading private prep schools and was attended by Lady Gabriella Kingston, the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. It caters for girls aged three to 13 and has a pre-prep school for boys aged between three and seven.

The institution was the first British boarding preparatory school for girls and currently has more than 380 pupils.

Germany: Man repeatedly shouts ‘Allahu akbar’ and attacks police officers – case concealed by police (Video)

Privat

These are disturbing moments that are spreading online: a man is lying on the ground, pinned down by two police officers. Three other officers, wearing protective vests like their colleagues, are securing the area. Next to them are emergency service workers who have arrived in an ambulance. The man lying on the ground, his shoes beside him, repeatedly shouts ‘Allahu akbar’ in Arabic, which means ‘ Allah is great’. This exclamation is often used by assassins and terrorists.

An eyewitness recorded the incident on his mobile phone and then posted the video online. The incident took place yesterday, Tuesday afternoon, at around 2 p.m. in downtown Völklingen. The location of the incident is Hofstattstraße, directly in front of the ‘Ensar Market’. Although the video recordings are spreading like wildfire on social media, the police are concealing the incident from the public, thereby ensuring that rumours are rapidly growing out of control.

Alleged witnesses on the internet report that the man was running around with a knife. Others even claim to know that there was a knife attack. Even a day after the incident, the authorities have not yet informed the public about the high-profile operation. Only when asked did a spokesperson for the Völklingen Criminal Investigation Department report: ‘We were called to a house where a strange man was sleeping in the hallway. When the officers approached him and tried to take him to the waiting ambulance, the situation escalated. He tried to injure the police officers with kicks and headbutts. He did not have a weapon.’

The police officers were not injured during the operation. The shouts of ‘Allahu akbar’ are noted in the operation report. The identity of the unknown man has not yet been determined. Investigations are ongoing. Officers currently estimate him to be in his mid-20s. The man, who is in a state of mental distress, is being treated at the SHG Clinic, where he can now undergo professional treatment.

UK: Oxford Union’s next president ‘celebrated Charlie Kirk’s killing’

George Abaraonye (pictured) had previously served as the Oxford African and Caribbean Society’s vice-president | OXFORD ACS

The president-elect of the Oxford Union has come under fire for appearing to celebrate the assassination of the American conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

George Abaraonye appeared to send a celebratory message to a WhatsApp group chat after the news emerged that Mr Kirk had been shot during an event at Utah Valley University.

The leaked messages, which have been widely shared on social media, appeared to show Mr Abaraonye writing: “Charlie Kirk got shot, let’s f****** go”.

A separate message, believed to be from his Instagram account, read: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool” – an elongated version of the “laugh out loud” acronym.

Mr Abaraonye had engaged in a debate with the conservative activist at the Oxford Union in May, just one month before he was elected president of the prestigious society.

Mr Kirk and the student debated the issue of “toxic masculinity” and butted heads over its consequences on young men and women.

The student had previously served as the Oxford African and Caribbean Society’s vice-president, a role which saw him sit on the Race Equality Task Force to “engage in conversations on racial diversity with [the] wider university”.

The Race Equality Task Force at the university was set up in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 to “promote racial equality” and focus on “decolonising” the curriculum at Oxford.

After the leaked messages sparked furious backlash across social media, Mr Abaraonye set his account to private, preventing anyone from accessing his posts.

In response to the messages, the Oxford Union published a statement which read: “The Oxford Union would like to unequivocally condemn the reported words and sentiments expressed by the President-Elect, George Abaraonye, with regards to the passing of Charlie Kirk.

“His reported views do not represent the Oxford Union’s current leadership or committee’s view.

“In alignment with the statement published by out society earlier today, we reaffirm our stance that the Oxford Union firmly opposes all forms of political violence and strongly stands by our commitment to free speech and considerate debate.

“We would like to reiterate that our condolences lie with Charlie Kirk’s family, especially his wife and young children, who are enduring such terrible grief.”

The student was accepted into the distinguished university despite achieving ABB at A-Levels, two grades below the standard grade requirement of AAA for Oxford’s PPE course.

Conservative MP Gregory Stafford has now called on the society to take action against the student, confirming he had “written to the returning officer to demand an urgent disciplinary investigation”.

Mr Stafford wrote: “The President of the Oxford Union is there to represent the Union and its members. By his words, Mr Abaraonye has gravely undermined that responsibility and brought the Union into serious disrepute.

“To give the impression of endorsing violence against a recent guest of the society is wholly incompatible with the traditions of free speech, respect, and integrity that the Union stands for.

“Disciplinary action must therefore be taken. I urge that Mr Abaraonye be suspended from office pending a full and impartial investigation.

“Due process is essential, but in light of these reported remarks it is hard to see how he can credibly take up the presidency. He is not fit to represent the Union or its membership.”

A spokesman for Oxford University said: “The Oxford Union is independent of the university.

“We deplore comments appearing to endorse violence – they are unacceptable and entirely contrary to the values of our community.”

Turkish teen released from psychiatric unit stabs teacher and student at former school in France in planned mass attack

An 18-year-old Turkish former student stabbed a teacher and a student at the Campus Vert d’Azur high school in Antibes, southern France, on Wednesday afternoon, despite having been on a national security watchlist and previously hospitalized for psychiatric and extremist threats.

The attacker, named as Ekin A., entered the school at around 1:30 p.m. armed with a kitchen knife and lunged at a 52-year-old English teacher, stabbing her three times. He then stabbed a 16-year-old student. As panic spread through the building, the 18-year-old moved deeper inside before being confronted by the school principal, who managed to calm him until police arrived and arrested him.

Both victims were treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital. Neither is in a life-threatening condition, though one was more seriously injured.

Police found a backpack containing a second knife during a search of the school grounds. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office has been notified of the case. Authorities confirmed that the teenager had been classed as an “S” individual — a category used to mark people considered a potential threat to national security — and was already known to police for “apology for terrorism.”

Le Figaro reported how in 2024, Ekin A. had been reported to the Grasse prosecutor by the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council after telling his psychiatrist he intended to carry out a mass killing. Prosecutor Damien Savarzeix said that police investigations confirmed he was “obsessed with mass killings and hardly tried to hide it.” He idolized far-right Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik, who murdered 77 people in the 2011 Norway attacks in Oslo and Utøya, and had studied the Columbine High School massacre in the United States in 1999.

When police raided his home in April 2024, they found several bladed weapons, a bulletproof tactical vest, notebooks laying out his criminal plan, and swastikas and cabalistic symbols on his bedroom walls. They also found extensive data and internet searches about mass killings. He had been in contact with a 17-year-old girl in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin who appeared to share his fantasies; she was later arrested and placed in psychiatric care.

Ekin A. was charged with “participation in a criminal association with a view to preparing a crime” and “public apology for a crime or offense,” then transferred to compulsory psychiatric care on the orders of the prefect, who deemed him too dangerous for prison. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was alerted at the time.

Despite this, he was later released and returned to live with his family. Local police said they were stunned to learn he had been freed, saying they knew “how dangerous and determined he was.”

On Wednesday, he walked unchallenged into his former school. Students said the gate was open and there were no security checks or alarms. One student who sheltered during the attack said in a video: “A man broke into the school with a knife… There was zero information from anyone. The gate is always open and anyone can enter. Frankly, that’s what shocked me. We heard the commotion from downstairs. There were no alerts, no messages. We only found out someone had been injured when teachers started messaging each other.”

Jean Leonetti, the mayor of Antibes, praised the quick thinking of staff who helped prevent a larger massacre. “I strongly condemn this brutal attack, which unfortunately spares no part of our country,” he wrote. “The perpetrator was able to be restrained thanks to the remarkable composure of the head of the establishment and the teams present.”

National Rally’s de facto leader Marine Le Pen criticized the fact that the suspect had remained in France, writing: “In Antibes, a teacher and a student were injured, attacked with a knife by a foreign national, on the S list, and unfavorably known to the police for ‘apology for terrorism.’ What was he still doing in France?”

The suspect is now in custody, facing charges of attempted murder and armed intrusion on school grounds.

Greenhouses pay the costs of demonizing ‘greenhouse gas’

By Vijay Jayaraj

The era of hypothetical warnings about the cost of green policies is over. We have now entered the brutal phase of reporting with empirical data the economic devastation that the foolish “decarbonization” agenda has left in its wake. The latest exhibit in this gallery of ruin is New Zealand, where the so-called “green” transition has just claimed a victim: greenhouse growers of the nation’s food production line.

Typically made of glass or plastic, greenhouses are used for indoor crop production. They allow growers to control parameters such as temperature and humidity, enabling year-round cultivation of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Common food crops are tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce. Because carbon dioxide is a plant food, concentrations of the gas are sometimes elevated in greenhouses to accelerate growth.

All this requires a lot of energy, making greenhouses vulnerable to climate taxes on carbon dioxide emissions and bans on hydrocarbons, which drive fuel and electricity prices higher.

Government policies have tripled natural gas prices for Simon Watson of NZ Hothouse, a 25-year tomato producer in South Auckland, who says the very foundation of his business is crumbling.

“Twenty-five years ago, gas was abundant and we were told it was going to last forever,” said Watson. “It was a wonderful thing.”

But the good times are gone. Natural gas supplies are running out, and rising costs threaten to uproot the entire operation, disrupting hundreds of workers. Watson’s two plants represent about 10% of New Zealand’s 500 acres of covered crops in the upper North Island. He predicts many will have to cut back or close because they can’t afford to pay for gas.

Natural gas fuels far more than greenhouses. Watson points out that 80% to 90% of supermarket products — from meat and dairy to sugary drinks and liquor — rely on gas-intensive processes. The decline in natural gas reserves is pushing prices higher. The government and the energy industry have nine months to come up with a solution before the high energy demands of next winter make the situation catastrophic.

Self-Inflicted Energy Pain

The gas crisis in New Zealand began with a 2018 ban on new permits for offshore exploration in the Taranaki region, curtailing growth in oil and gas production. The energy sector, historically a significant contributor to New Zealand’s economy, has faced reduced investment and exploration activity, impeding domestic gas production.

Recently reversing its ban on permits, the government has now allocated $200 million for offshore gas exploration. Similarly, New Zealand has exited an international group promoting the phasing out of fossil fuels, signaling a retreat from climate policies. But it will take a while before these changes can yield results, leaving businesses in limbo.

Threat to Global Agriculture

This manufactured crisis reveals the true cost of climate virtue-signaling — not just in New Zealand but across the globe, where similar policies are damaging the agricultural sector.

Canadian greenhouse farmers face carbon tax bills that represent up to 40% of their energy costs. Added to this are carbon taxes that Canadians pay when buying fuel, electricity, and groceries.

Agriculture ranks among global industries most dependent on fossil fuels, making it particularly susceptible to the harms of bad energy policy. Diesel fuel powers equipment and propane runs grain dryers and heats barns. Nitrogen fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides are synthesized from natural gas and oil byproducts.

The biggest irony is that the CO2 that climate activists demonize enhances photosynthesis and boosts agricultural productivity.

The self-inflicted pain of “decarbonization” is not accidental but by design — a way of forcing a decrease in energy use to satisfy a perverted, anti-human ideology that preaches an apocalyptic vision with no basis in science or common sense. The question is whether societies will recognize this path to destruction before it’s too late to reverse course.

Macron still doesn’t get it: All France agrees Macronism must go

The collapse of French Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government did not seem to trouble President Emmanuel Macron. Macron’s appointment of Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, a long-time loyalist, as his new Prime Minister shows the President still thinks his centrist agenda is politically viable.

It’s understandable that he would resist dissolving parliament a second time, given that his Ensemble coalition has sunk to an unfathomably low 15-16 per cent in polls. But Lecornu’s appointment shows Macron remains in denial about the one thing a divided France agrees on: Macronism must go.

Consider the facts. Macron’s job approval is a mere 21 per cent, seven points lower than when his faction decisively lost last year’s election. Popular demonstrations against his signature economic policies are large and growing in size and scope.

The French may not be sure if they want to turn to the populist Right or the Marxist-tinged Left, but they increasingly are sure that staying the course is intolerable.

Macron’s parliamentary position is not inviting. His tripartite Renaissance coalition (Ensemble, Democratic Movement, and Horizons) holds a mere 161 seats in the 577-member Assembly. Its centre-right allies, the Republicans, add only 49 more. That’s 216 seats, well short of the 289 needed for a majority.

That means Lecornu needs to ally with another party or grouping to prevail. Since Macron rules out any regular arrangement with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and her allies, that means he must turn to his left to govern.

But Macronistes also rule out any regular arrangement with the far-left faction headed by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, France Unbowed, and its green and Communist fellow travellers.

This is a principled stance. But together it means Lecornu must then rely on the Socialists, who have 66 members, and a few stray members from smaller parties to cobble together a narrow majority.

That has proven to be untenable for his two predecessors, in large part because the Socialists ran in an electoral coalition with the other leftist parties, the New Popular Front, in the last election. If the Socialists move to the Macronist center, they abandon the voters who gave them their seats.

They have consistently refused to do this. Indeed, their decision to oppose Bayrou’s government because of his refusal to accommodate their fiscal demands sealed his fate.

The Republicans also refuse to move to the Left to accommodate parliamentary reality, insisting that any government meet their fiscal demands.

Macron and Lecornu are therefore stuck between the Scylla of a fiscally loose Socialist left and the Charybdis of a fiscally tight Republican right.

The inherent incompatibility of these demands was on stark display in the prospective parties’ reactions to Bayrou’s deposition. The Socialist leader called on Macron to appoint a Prime Minister from the Left, but Mélenchon said he would refuse to support a Socialist government that included Macronist ministers.

Meanwhile, Republican leader Bruno Retailleau said his party would not participate in a government with a Socialist Prime Minister.

Macron’s appointment of Lecornu is thus an attempt to defy reality and try a third time to govern from a centre that has not held. Like Sisyphus, however, he is doomed to see the boulder roll back down the hill.

He will eventually have to make a tactical retreat. That will mean watering down some of his policies and keeping French debt levels higher than he wants. But the political math following his own blunder gives him no other option.

Macron is not likely to do this, however, with Lecornu as his agent.

Moving to the Left for support on a budget is not feasible given Mélenchon’s position. Macron cannot cobble together a majority with merely the moderate Left and his forces even if the Socialists were willing to join him.

Moving to the Right means governing in tacit, if not explicit, coalition with National Rally. They likely would not agree to this, given that they stand to gain significantly if new elections are held. Why should Le Pen give up the chance to strengthen her party’s position for a mere year’s worth of marginal gains?

This means new elections are inevitable. And those elections will further erode Macron’s parliamentary position and cede ground to the extremes Right and Left, throwing his agenda into the trash bin.

That may be in Macronism’s long-term interest. France faces deep problems and government forces populists to sober up quickly. It’s possible, perhaps even likely, that the only way to prick the populist energy gaining ground in France is to give them a hand at the tiller.

Macron would not benefit from this personally, as he would be diminished and appear to be a beaten figure.

But that’s already the truth. He’s a political version of Bruce Willis’ character from the classic movie, The Sixth Sense: Macron is already politically dead; he just doesn’t know it.
