Left-Wing Labour Gov’t Defends Sharia Courts in Britain, Backs Broad ‘Islamophobia’ Definition

The Labour Party government has argued that allowing Sharia courts to operate in the United Kingdom is a fundamental “British value” and has refused to distance itself from a broad stroke definition of so-called Islamophobia, which critics say would brand discussions around Muslim child rape grooming gangs as potentially illegally racist.

Pressed on Tuesday in the House of Commons by Reform UK’s Sarah Pochin as to whether the government supported the existence of Sharia courts in the UK, Minister of State for Courts and Legal Services, Sarah Sackman, unequivocally backed their right to operate.

The Labour MP for Finchley and Golders Green said: “Sharia law forms no part of the law of England and Wales but in common with Christian, Jewish, and other courts of faith where people choose to put themselves before those councils, that’s part of the religious tolerance that is an important British value.”

However, critics have noted that unlike local Jewish courts, most Sharia councils in the UK have refused to sign the Arbitration Act of 1996, meaning that there is little to no oversight on how they function or provide recourse to those subjected to their rulings.

According to The Telegraph, there are as many as 85 Sharia courts dotted across Britain. The councils, headed up by local Islamic men, often arbitrate divorces or other civil matters such as inheritance disputes.

Some have warned that they fundamentally undermine British family law by creating a parallel legal structure and perpetuate Islamic inequalities such as in the case of women or homosexuals.

One woman who gave testimony to a 2018 Home Office report claimed that the Imams on the Sharia court had attempted to force her to return to her violent and sexually abusive husband.

“These Imams just don’t listen – they try and force you back to your husband no matter what, and feel they have the right to disturb your life,” she said.

Southall Black Sisters, a domestic abuse treatment centre in Southall, England, also told the report that such courts are “often corrupt, primarily interested in making money and abusing their positions of power.”

The charity said that Sharia courts act as “money-making schemes” and often demand exorbitant fees, saying that some women are told that they need to pay their husbands thousands to obtain a Muslim divorce certificate from the council.

In addition to defending Sharia courts, the Labour government also backed the controversial definition of Islamophobia defined by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, which opponents have claimed would represent a “backdoor blasphemy law” if the Labour government officially adopts it as the party has already done.

The issue was raised on Tuesday by Conservative MP Nick Timothy, who noted that the APPG’s version of Islamophobia classified discussions surrounding mostly Pakistani Muslim child rape grooming gangs as “racist” as well as noting that groups like the Muslim Brotherhood engage in “entryism” to infiltrate government institutions, as has recently been admitted by a French government report.

Other examples of “classic Islamophobia” cited by the report included: “Muhammed being a paedophile, claims of Muslims spreading Islam by the sword or subjugating minority groups under their rule.”

Shabana Mahmood, who recently became Britain’s first female Muslim Home Secretary, refused to distance the government from the APPG definition and said that the definition was “seeking to give context to patterns of behaviour” but maintained that the government would not seek to downplay those involved in the grooming gangs and that the government would not impede on freedom of speech.

After mounting pressure, the government was forced into launching a full public inquiry into the scandal, and the instances of it being covered up in mainly Labour-run areas, after previously dismissing demands for an inquiry as “far-right” messaging.

The issue of so-called Islamophobia — a term coined by the Muslim Brotherhood — has been a major focus of the left-wing Labour Party as it seeks to maintain its longstanding support from Muslim communities in Britain. The party has been bleeding such support in recent years, however, with independent Muslim politicians running in races on an explicitly pro-Gaza platform.

Egyptian migrant who raped woman in Hyde Park in London is convicted Islamist terrorist

Abdelrahmen Adnan Abouelela has been jailed | METROPOLITAN POLICE

A migrant who was jailed for raping a woman in Hyde Park was part of an Islamic terrorist cell.

Abdelrahmen Adnan Abouelela was found guilty in his absence of being part of a bomb-making cell in Egypt and given a seven-year jail sentence on May 5, 2015.

Abouelela was one of a group of seven people who manufactured explosives to carry out acts such as the bombing of electricity pylons and gas lines, reports the Daily Mail.

The 47-year-old was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, having escaped from Egypt before he was convicted.

The father-of-one arrived in the UK in April 2023 and claimed asylum in the UK.

He was staying in a four-star Hilton Hotel in Ealing, west London when he carried out his attack.

Southwark Crown Court heard how he approached the victim as she was walking home alone from a night-out in central London at about 9pm in November last year, luring her to a secluded spot in the park where he raped her.

He was convicted of rape on May 22 this year and was jailed for eight-and-a-half years on Tuesday.

Court records in Egypt suggest the group rented an apartment in the Ebnia Baitak area of the 10th of Ramadan City, about 75km to the east of Cairo, where they constructed their bombs.

After brief periods of living in Malaysia and Sudan, he first claimed asylum while living in Turkey.

While there, he posted a video where he claimed to be a member of the Egyptian “opposition” who had been detained for 72 days, adding: “I don’t know what will happen to me.”

He also repeatedly posted messages on Facebook criticising Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah Saeed Hussein Khalil el-Sisi and his regime.

In various posts on social media, he would describe how he had been briefly imprisoned in Egypt in 2015 by the “dogs” of the el-Sisi regime.

He marked the 11th anniversary of the Rabaa massacre in Cairo when El-Sisi, the-then Defence Minister, cleared two camps of supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.

It led to the mass killing of over 900 protesters, with almost 4,000 people injured.

Abouelela referenced those who died on August 14, 2013, stating in Arabic: “Oh God, make their blood a curse on their killers.”

Abouelela also has shared his support for the Muslim Brotherhood, a group regarded as a terror organisation in many countries, however it is not banned in the UK.

The group dates back to 1928 before it arrived in Britain around six decades ago. However, it remains a collection of loosely associated groups rather than a single entity.

David Cameron’s Conservative Government took the decision not to ban the movement in 2015, despite individuals “closely associated” with the group having supported suicide bombing and other attacks in Israel by Hamas.

A Government review said the group characterised Western societies and liberal Muslims as “decadent and immoral.”

Countries that have labelled and outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation include Austria, Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Abouelela faces automatic deportation under the UK Borders Act 2007 after serving his sentence for rape as he will have served a sentence of over a year in prison.

However, there are concerns he could potentially manage to stay if he launches a successful legal appeal on the grounds that deportation would breach his rights under the European Convention on Human Rights or the UK’s obligations under the Refugee Convention.

Abouelela’s membership of the Muslim Brotherhood or one of its affiliates was revealed in a 2019 report about his detention at Ataturk airport by the Saudi state-owned international Arabic news channel Al Arabiya.

Abouelela was subsequently diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder and complex PTSD, defence barrister Kane Sharpe told the court.

Judge Perrins, however, stated he found this mitigating factor to be “minimal”, adding: “There is little connection between those circumstances and your decision to rape the victim on that night.

“It’s clear to me you do not believe you have done anything wrong.”

The judge further commended the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, for her “immense bravery and courage” in giving evidence during Abouelela’s trial at Southwark Crown Court earlier this year.

Socialist Paris Mayor ‘put luxury clothing on expenses’

Screengrab X

Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist Mayor of Paris, is facing heat after it became public that she used taxpayer money to pay for expensive Dior dresses and a Burberry coat, alongside lavish travel expenses.

After a long legal battle, the association for Transparence Citoyenne (Citizen Transparency) was able to retrieve part of the expense reports of the Paris Mayor.

It found that over four years, Hidalgo had claimed €210,000 in reimbursed expenses.

The association received 118 receipts, corresponding to €61,513.39 worth of reimbursements between June 25, 2020 and April 15, 2024.

The receipts were seen by many as highly questionable, angering the wider public faced with austerity and government cuts as both France’s and Paris’ budgets face big shortfalls.

Investigative journalists at Mediapart, who also examined the matter, uncovered that a total of €84,200 was spent on the Mayor’s representation expenses between 2020 and 2024.

Hidalgo was reimbursed for €6,320 worth of Dior dresses in 2024, a Burberry coat costing €3,067 in 2023, a Dior blouse worth €1,120 in 2021 and a Burberry Jacket costing €1,087 in 2020. In 2022, she bought an Eric Bompard poncho for €340.

The Socialist politician also had the taxpayer pay for high-end fashion items from BHV Marais, Repetto and Gérard Darel, priced between €500 and €1,000.

There were also cheaper purchases, for example a sweater for €153.5 and a dress for €180 bought on December 15.

Next to luxury outfits, a large part of the expenses went on travel, with €125,000 spent between July 2020 and December 2023.

In 2023, Hidalgo went to a UN climate summit in New York for €9,810. A year earlier she visited the city again at a cost of €10,034. In 2021, she visited the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, claiming a bill of €12,687.

Guillaume Leroy, president of Citizen Transparency, noted that Paris officials were making it difficult to gain access to the public documents, despite their legal obligation to do so.

He said it took him months to receive the information and even then he only received partial data. Leroy added that he obtained global expenses for each trip but did not receive information on any travel expenses in detail.

There were also questions about Hidalgo’s trip to Poland, in April, 2022, because she stayed there for several days but no accommodation costs levied, something now being investigated by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office.

The opposition parties in Paris were not happy with the expenses.

Aurélien Véron, of the centre-right Les Républicains”, said that the Paris Council “has never voted a special mandate for these trips”.

He alleged in a tweet yesterday that between 2020 and 2024, Hidalgo bought €84,000 worth of clothes with public funds.

Paul Hatte of the local Union Capitale Party said Hidalgo’s apparent expenses were “mind-blowing” and highlighted that “no entrepreneur or salesman has the right to declare his suits as a professional office”.

Hidalgo has a budget of €20,000 per year. Only €714 remained of this at the end of 2024. News outlet Mediapart found there was €4,900 left in 2023, €5,800 in 2022, €14 in 2021 and €2,800 in 2020.

In a reaction to the publication of the expenses, Hidalgo’s office said: “The Mayor of Paris participates in many official performances throughout the year. Paris, the capital of France, was the host city of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Anne Hidalgo receives heads of state and foreign delegations throughout the year.

“Clothing purchased as part of its entertainment expenses is used for this purpose.”

It also noticed: “The mayor of Paris does not use her representation expenses to buy jewelry and everything is declared,” referring to an investigation into centre-right opposition leader Rachida Dati, who did not declare her jewellery with an estimated worth of €420,000.

While emphasising that “we respect the framework set by the ethics commission”, Hidalgo’s office acknowledged: “We regret that she [Hidalgo] did not always provide satisfactory answers.

“The City of Paris transmits the requested documents but it can happen that the people or associations who request them are not satisfied with the elements transmitted,” it said.

Hildago’s team accused Citizen Transparency of being financed by the Conservative billionaire, Edouard Stérin and not always devoid of political ulterior motive. Leroy added that his organisation had made similar demands for transparency from right-wing authorities in other cities.

Paris city hall told newspaper Le Parisien yesterday: “The representation expenses of the Mayor of Paris and the mayors of the arrondissements are regulated,” and that the responsible  authorities executed an audit of these expenses and had “not issued any comment”.

Hidalgo had been grilled by other associations on her expenses before but after several years of judicial battle, she received a favourable ruling by a judge. He ruled that she did not have to give extra information on her restaurant bill, travel expenses or purchases on clothing.

Judicial experts noted that it should have wider repercussions regarding business expenses, because either the Paris Mayor has misappropriated public funds, in which case she must repay the money and be prosecuted, or expensive clothing is a professional representation expense, in which case entrepreneurs and employees should be able to include it in their business expenses to reduce their taxes, without risking prosecution for tax fraud.

In 2023 she was in hot water over an expensive trip to Tahiti to inspect the 2024 Olympics surfing venue, which critics called a disguised family vacation for visiting her daughter. The total cost for Hidalgo and five aides amounted to around €60,000, with an additional €10,000 spent on 5GB of mobile data.

It sparked investigations into the possible misuse of public funds, leading to a police raid on Paris City Hall in 2024

Charlie Sheen: Charlie Kirk Assassination Was this Generation’s ‘JFK Moment’

Charlie Sheen.Screengrab youtube

Actor Charlie Sheen said Tuesday on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” that the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was “this generation’s JFK moment.”

Morgan said, “You know, an extraordinary moment. Really a horrific moment. What do you feel about this, Charlie? That somebody would be executed like that? Basically for having opinions someone didn’t like?”

Sheen said, “I first thought about his fatherless children, his wife, instantly a widow. So I didn’t care about the politics or any of the social aspects, cultural aspects. You know, at first I immediately thought of just in the family dynamic and component and the value of of what was just ripped from all of them forever.”

He continued, “Joe and I just trying to kind of keep some measure of, just keep our wits and sensibilities about us processing this. And then, you know, we’re discussing the JFK assassination earlier in that same interview. Yeah, if that moment had to happen, the moment happened and being Rogan for the aftermath of it was helpful. If that if that makes sense. I just, you know, I don’t know, I think for this generation, I think that’s their JFK moment. I mean, seriously, and I just, you know, if that’s where we that’s where we wound up, it cannot be where we stay. You know it’s still, I don’t want to say it’s still not, it just still doesn’t feel, it’s too surreal to process.”

Dutch Parliament moves to criminalize ‘conversion therapy’

Office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Wikimedia Commons, Zairon, CC-BY-SA-4.0

The Dutch Parliament voted to advance a bill criminalizing so-called “conversion therapy.”

Any therapy or practice that is meant to change a person’s “sexual orientation” may become punishable by law in the Netherlands, after a majority in the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament, voted in favor of a bill outlawing it last week.

According to the NL Times, conservative parties expressed concern that even “pastoral conversations” with spiritual leaders regarding sexuality or gender confusion could become criminalized. The initiators of the bill said that it would only be a criminal offense if someone tried to change or suppress someone’s sexual inclination in an “intrusive” or “systematic” manner.

It remains to be seen what that means in practice. The law seems to be targeting conservative Christian churches, which recognize homosexuality as a grave moral evil.

People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) member Bente Becker said, “In our country, you should be able to be who you are and love who you want. It is unacceptable for people to try to ‘cure’ you of your sexual orientation through prayer sessions or even abuse. With this bill, we ensure that such ‘conversion practices’ are punishable.”

The only two parties that voted against the bill were the Reformed Political Party (SGP) and the Christian Union.

The Dutch LGBT activist group COC welcomed the decision.

“This is a major victory,” a spokesperson of the COC said. “Gender identity and sexual orientation cannot be changed. Claiming otherwise causes lifelong harm.”

In fact, the vast majority of children who suffer gender confusion grow out of it naturally, and research shows that homosexual inclinations are changeable, contrary to popular opinion.

The COC expressed hope that the ban would cause religious groups “to stop treating homosexuality as a disease.”

“Because doing so destroys people,” it claimed.

However, homosexuality, in addition to contradicting the natural purpose of sexuality – procreation – is linked to a nearly 30-times higher risk of HIV and a 17-times higher rate of anal cancer, as well as elevated risks of other cancers, STDs, and disorders.

“The sexually active homosexual population suffers disproportionally from HIV, anal cancer, chlamydia trachomatis, cryptosporidium, microsporidia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, hepatitis B and C, genital warts, scabies, HPV, and other conditions,” Catholic pro-family organization Fieles a la Verdad has noted. “As a result, the average life expectancy of sexually active homosexual males is reduced by many years.”

The bill will only become law if it is passed by the Senate, where it is set to be debated in the coming months.

French Far-Left Seek to Block Publication of Book Linking Party to Radical Islamists

The far-left ‘France in Revolt’ party is reportedly threatening to sue a publisher in an attempt to block the release of a book by a Syrian journalist documenting their ties to radical Islamist groups seeking to institute Sharia.

The Plon publisher has reportedly been served legal notices from an attorney representing the La France Insoumise (LFI) party of former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the 74-year-old socialist often compared to Jeremy Corbyn in the UK and Bernie Sanders in the United States.

According to Le Point, LFI attorney Mathieu Davy threatened the publisher with a lawsuit over “unfounded remarks and attacks on the honour and reputation of La France Insoumise” in the upcoming Les Complices du mal (The Accomplices of Evil) book by journalist Omar Youssef Souleimane. The party also reportedly demanded an early copy of the book before its release in October to study the accusations against the LFI.

According to a description published by the bookselling website Lisez.com, Souleimane claims to have infiltrated LFI-organised pro-Palestinian demonstrations and associated Palestinian groups and collected testimonies, and documented antisemitic slogans and radical images. It said that the book will seek to expose the “murky alliance of La France insoumise with Islamism, and its project to destabilise French democracy”.

“After months of work and many interviews with party executives, the author reveals the links between some LFI candidates and Islamist projects trying to impose new social norms compatible with Sharia. By setting up a separatist discourse, playing on colonial memory to mobilise part of the French youth, these actors create the conditions for a social confrontation,” the description continued.

The book is further pitched as a “cry of alarm”, warning that the emerging “alliance between the extreme left and political Islam” risks undermining the official secular values of the French republic’s constitution and threatens national cohesion.

In response to the attempts to shut down the publication of his book, Souleimane wrote on X: “I fled the persecutions of the Assad regime in Syria to live freely in the homeland of human rights, and thirteen years later I find myself facing policies that would seek to silence me!”

Former presidential candidate for the centre-right Les Républicains and current President of the Regional Council of Île-de-France, Valérie Pécresse, remarked that the “LFI wants to censor a book about its ties with Islamists. The author Omar Souleimane fled the Syrian dictatorship to find refuge in French democracy. And the Mélenchonist pack wants to silence him? Freedom of expression is not negotiable!”

As with Corbyn in the UK, the Moroccan-born Mélenchon and the LFI have long faced accusations of antisemitism and of cosying up to radical Islamists.

This has paid off for the far-left in recent elections, with Mélenchon winning 69 per cent of Muslims in the 2022 presidential election and the LFI winning 62 per cent of the Muslim vote in last year’s European Parliament elections, in which they focused heavily on the conflict in Gaza.

However, there has been increasing focus on the threat of radical Islamic networks in France following an intelligence report that found the Muslim Brotherhood has conducted a decades-long “Western conquest strategy” by infiltrating institutions in France and across Europe with the ultimate aim of imposing Sharia on the continent.

Mélenchon attempted to downplay the French intelligence report, claiming that it was full of far-right “conspiracy theories” and was “Islamophobic” — a term invented by the Muslim Brotherhood, which the report noted is used by radical Islamists to protect their public legitimacy and to curry favour with the left.

German Young Socialists: “Ban Men’s Podcasts! Take the Microphones Away from Men!”

The Kiel branch of the Young Socialists (Jusos) is demanding a ban on men’s podcasts, Apollo News reports. Jusos is arguing that the format spreads ‘toxic masculinity’ stereotypes and conspiracy theories, and pose a threat to democratic values. Their motion, set to be debated at the SPD youth organization’s state delegate conference at the end of September, is titled: “Ban men’s podcasts! – Take the microphones away from men!”

According to the motion, podcasts like Hoss & Hopf or the Andrew Tate brand have “developed into a dangerous phenomenon over the past two years.” Jusos Kiel argues that such programs promote “an uncritical glorification of toxic masculinity ideals and the ‘alpha mindset,’” while frequently featuring guests who spread “sexist stereotypes and discriminatory statements.” They further accuse these podcasts of presenting “pseudoscientific theories and numerous conspiracy theories” that are “trumpeted out to the world.”

One of the most prominent examples is Hoss & Hopf, hosted by Philip Hopf and Kiarash Hossainpour. With nearly half a million YouTube followers and strong popularity on Spotify, the podcast reaches a large young, male, and often more conservative audience through discussions on finance, politics, and masculinity.

Jusos claims such content damages the “basic democratic order” and risks “teaching young people dangerous role models as desirable.” They are therefore calling for an “investigation of podcasts whose formats promote the ‘real man’ cult.”

The motion proposes pausing podcasts that (in Jusos’ minds) “violate the free democratic order and common sense” until they submit an improvement plan. Upon resuming, a female fact-checker must correct false claims during episodes. Additionally, the motion calls for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the harms of ‘toxic male imagery’ in digital media and promote healthier alternatives.

The motion concludes with a sharp warning: men who “endanger democracy and openly spread sexist propaganda” must be countered. “We can no longer allow these ‘men’ to be ‘men’.” At the same time, Jusos, ironically, also emphasizes that “freedom of expression in Germany is and remains an important asset in our democracy.”

Switzerland: African migrant committed incredible 46 crimes in 13 months, showed his penis on trains, stole in multiple cities, and sexually assaulted a woman

Illustration. AI Photo Generator

An African migrant, from Eritrea, committed an incredible number of crimes in a short period of time, perpetrating at least 46 crimes in just 13 months in Switzerland. The number and range of crimes is shocking, with the man routinely showing his penis to women on trains, committing thefts, and sexually assaulting at least one woman in Frauenfeld.

The man has been sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to be deported, with a ban on Swiss territory for 10 years. Whether they actually manage to deport him, or just shift him to another European country, remains to be seen. In 10 years, he may return to Switzerland.

He robbed from many different cities, committing thefts in St. Gallen, Thurgau and Zurich. In addition, he was known for his routine and bizarre acts of exhibition, exposing his penis to women on trains and even in a flower shop.

In one incident, he seriously sexually assaulted a woman in Frauenfeld, jumping on her at night, groping her, and sexually harassing her. It was only a matter of luck that the victim was able to wriggle free from the African and escape.

During his trial, the St. Galler Tagblatt reported that the defendant appeared to have no remorse or even any insight as to why he was in court. He dragged the court process on with interjections, although he spoke little German and had to have all his statements translated.

The man routinely asked for the court to repeat what had just been said, even though he appeared to be mentally absent from most of the proceedings.

Judge Daniel Geeler screamed during the proceedings, “You’d better listen!”

The man’s criminal convictions were 23 pages long, and the court case featured witness statements, videos, and even the occasional confession from the suspect regarding at least some of the crimes.

Although he was accused of 46 separate offenses, the court convicted him on only 31 counts, including sexual assault, theft, sexual harassment, and trespassing.

The African showed no remorse in court. He will also have to pay 50,000 Swiss Francs as restitution; however, it is unclear how he will ever obtain any such sum of money besides through taxpayer-funded welfare.

The Swiss judge, Geeler, seemed to be shocked by the man’s crime spree.

“The accused has an incredible 31 convictions, this court of law has never seen this before,” the judge said during the trial.

Now, Swiss media is using the case to showcase that “hardly any perpetrator in the region has accumulated such a criminal record in such a short period of time.”

Despite claims that “diversity is our strength,” cases like this are far from rare. One Lebanese migrant in Germany had over 100 active investigations for his various crimes, including stalking children on playgrounds in Zetel.

One Moroccan migrant terrorized a small German town for 10 years, with dozens of criminal offenses.

The small German town of Güstrow also featured one Afghan migrant with constant criminal offenses, leaving the town feeling helpless to stop him.

German AfD party tops voter survey as Chancellor Merz faces dissatisfaction

The right-wing Alternative for Germany party (AfD) is soaring in the polls.

In the latest survey by pollster YouGov, published today, the right-wingers top the lists with 27 per cent of the vote, beating the Conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz by 1 percentage point.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) got 15 per cent, the Greens 11 per cent and the hard-left Die Linke party was favoured by 9 per cent of respondents.

The 27 per cent share of the YouGov poll is the biggest the AfD has ever had in a German poll for a hypothetical general election.

In the February 2025 general election, the right-wingers got 20.8 per cent of the vote while the CDU reached 28.5 per cent.

In the seven months since the election, though, Merz and his CDU have rapidly lost voter support. Merz, unwilling to break his party’s self-imposed ban on cooperating with AfD, entered a coalition with the only other available partner, the Social Democrats (SPD).

At the mercy of his left-wing junior partner, the Chancellor and his party colleagues have had to row back on many of the promises that won them the election.

That has included bringing down the price of electricity and reforming the costly and suffocating German welfare state.

In the absence of serious reforms, the German economy has also not shown any signs of revitalisation, with GDP growth flatlining and unemployment surpassing the three-million-mark.

As of early September, a full 75 per cent of Germans were dissatisfied with Merz’ government.

In the debate on the federal budget in the Bundestag today, AfD leader Alice Weidel accused Merz of duping his voters, saying: “You have broken every single election promise … Return to nuclear power: promised before the election, cancelled in the coalition agreement.

“Reduction of electricity taxes: Promised in the coalition agreement, and immediately thrown out the window.”

Merz, who followed Weidel at the lectern, once more promised bold reforms for this autumn: “The decisions that lie ahead of us are not about details, but about very fundamental issues,” he said.

“They are about nothing less than the future of our country – how we live, how we live together, how we work, how we do business, and whether our values will continue to endure.”

Merz remained vague, though, and did not mention any specific plans for reforms.

In the past weeks, it was mainly his coalition partner, the SPD, that made headlines with plan after plan after plan for tax hikes.
