Members of Timmermans’ party demand more pro-Palestinian line

Dutch politician and former European Union deputy Frans Timmermans is facing heat over his vocal support for Israel following the Hamas terrorist attacks that began on October 7.

Members of the Socialists and Green coalition in the Netherlands are demanding Timmermans rectify his comments regarding the violent assault, especially the depiction of Israel’s retaliation as “self-defence”.

In a letter published by the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, coalition members referred to the situation, talking about “apartheid state Israel” and “fascism of the Israeli state” that is “difficult to ignore”.

The authors of the letter were Juliette Mattijssen (a member of both parties), Geke Hasperhoven (Green Party), and Martine Doppen (Green Party). They had also asked PvdA and GL members to sign it. Historically, the Green Party has maintained a sympathetic stance towards the Palestinian cause.

The Left-wing party members demanded the leadership, Timmermans and Jesse Klaver, rectify their comments regarding the Hamas action.

In their letter to the leaders, the authors said they “disapprove the violence of Hamas, and don’t ask to approve it” but added they did demand “an honest depiction of the situation and interpret the origin of violence in its context”.

That context is, according to them, the “apartheid state Israel” and the “fascism of the Israeli state”.

On social media, party members and sympathisers had already reacted similarly to the condemnation of Hamas and “the right to self-defence”.

Among comments were some stating Israel was “far-Right” and the leaders’ reaction “completely unnuanced”. Others indicated maps they said showed Israel “stole” Palestinian land.

In the letter, there is also an announcement that the members will “defend” their opinion on the matter during the party conference in Rotterdam on October 14.

On the evening of October 10 , Timmermans stated on TV that Israel had the right to defend itself. He said he believed the country’s current circumstances should be better appreciated but also said he demanded “proportionality” from Israel. He added that turning off power and water to Gaza was not proportionate.

In the Dutch Parliament, Klaver said it was “perfectly logical” that Israel had the right “to protect itself” and “will do everything possible to ensure that Hamas is not able to carry out such an act again”.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a sensitive issue on the broader Left, with a large proportion, especially on the hard Left, putting most of the blame for the current situation on Israel. The French La France Insoumise party, for instance, refuses to describe Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

In major cities across the West, there have been several pro-Palestinian demonstrations, often by protesters of foreign ancestry or of Islamic faith but also more general activists on the Left.

Looming disaster for German government? Majority of Germans want early elections, cite mass migration as single biggest issue

A majority of Germans want early elections to the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, according to a poll published on Tuesday. The poll also shows the radically pro-migration government is facing serious pushback on the issue of migration, with Germans naming it the most important issue driving their dissatisfaction with the government.

According to figures published in Bild newspaper, 57 percent of German voters support the idea of early elections, and just under a third, 31 percent, believe that the coalition government of the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens and Liberals (FDP) should remain in office until the planned end of the legislative term in autumn 2025.

A breakdown of the data by party shows that all opposition parties and the FDP are in favor of early elections, with 53 percent of liberal voters saying that it would be best to end the history of the first SPD-Greens-FDP government and hold new elections.

The polling institute INSA looked at five areas of government policy. It showed that voters are most dissatisfied with the work on migration and asylum, with 59 percent calling for a change of direction. In the run-up to the election, Remix News reported the results of a landmark poll showing that the vast majority of Germans wanted fewer migrants and saw more disadvantages to mass immigration than advantages.

Dissatisfaction is also widespread regarding housing policy, with 52 percent saying the government is not doing enough. The poll additionally shows that 49 percent are dissatisfied with government efforts in the areas of energy, pensions, and social policy, and 41 percent want a different policy on climate change.

The poll was conducted on Monday, a day after the legislative elections in Bavaria and Hesse, where all three governing parties performed worse than in the previous elections in 2018. The FDP was eliminated from the Landtag in Bavaria and finished just below the threshold of 5 percent in Hesse. The election outcome has been seen as a disaster by the ruling left-wing coalition and a boost for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which saw its vote totals soar higher in both states.

Germany: Black African rapist also ridiculed his victim

Photo: Police

The police mugshot is hard to bear: it shows a rapist laughing as he reaches for his victim (23). Immediately afterwards, he dragged the young woman to the ground and abused her. The perpetrator is on the run, an international manhunt is underway.

The police also found it difficult to publish the photo. The public prosecutor’s office and the examining magistrate hesitated for months. They wanted to spare the victim the sight. The sneer with which the black man grabbed the young woman’s before abusing her at 3.30 a.m. in the Herrnpark in Darmstadt’s city centre. This image full of gloating.

But the alleged perpetrator, who had already struck at the end of last year, remained as if he had vanished completely into thin air. It is possible that he is no longer in Germany and has long since fled to neighbouring countries.

A judge has now decided to release the photo after all search efforts had come to nothing. The picture shows the full-bearded rapist, who is only about 1.65 metres tall, wearing a black baseball cap and a light-coloured half coat on the night of the crime.

There is another photo taken by a surveillance camera in the middle of the night. Only 600 metres away from the later crime scene, the urgent suspect is lounging around in a bus shelter in the Luisenplatz area. It looks like he was already waiting there for a suitable victim.

Ireland: Lush cosmetic retailer facing major backlash after displaying ‘boycott Israel’ sign in store window

The “overly friendly cosmetics shop” is now facing criticism from many
 Twitter

A “boycott Israel” poster was put up in a Lush store, prompting heavy backlash against the cosmetic retailer.

The sign was put up in the Dublin brand of Lush and was quickly circulated on social media.

The UK-based company, who calls itself “the overly friendly cosmetics shop”, is now facing criticism from many, including appalled customers who say they will no longer shop there.

Social media user @benonwine posted the image online of the poster in the Henry Street store, writing: “What the hell is this @Lushltd. This is disgusting can you please comment?”

A spokesperson for the company said that it wished for “peace and safety for all Israeli and Palestinian people”.

As of yet, there has been no official comment on whether the poster has been removed and if the person that put it up has been disciplined.

Lush said: “We are a diverse company with staff of all ethnicities and religions whose personal views and opinions may vary, however, the following is our Company position: Lush deplores all violence and all injustice.

“Our wish is for peace and safety for all Israeli and Palestinian people. We support the upholding of international law and the human rights of all peoples.”

Outraged users reacted to the picture, with one saying: “Simple! Not purchasing anything from them ever again. Another company going to the wall…”

Another added: “This is appalling, especially for a store that’s not operating franchises, whatever your political views this sign should not be given the light of day in a shop window.”

Someone else commented: “It’s wrong – just as much as it would be if they wrote it about Palestine. Governments love this as it creates the divide they want. Don’t allow this in your country. It will cause attacks on innocent citizens.”

Others supporting Gaza, replied with encouraging comments surrounding the poster.

Lush has faced criticism in the past for openly supporting the Palestinian cause, in a conflict that has been waging since the 1940s.

Over 1,000 people have died in Israel as a result of Hamas’ attack which began on Saturday morning.

At least 900 Palestinians have been killed after Israel launched counter-attacks.

On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a chilling warning to Hamas, telling them that “though Israel didn’t start this war, Israel will finish it”.

Italy: Catania judge Apostolico rejects four more detention orders

ansa

Catania Judge Iolanda Apostolico has rejected another order for four Tunisian migrants to be held at a pre-removal centre in the Sicilian port town of Pozzallo in a move that is set to reignite a row about her decisions, sources said on Wednesday.
Apostolico recently came under heavy fire after a overturning a detention order against four other Tunisian nationals on the grounds that government legislation is alleged illegitimate.
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini’s League subsequently posted a video showing Apostolico at a protest demonstration in Catania in 2018 against the closed-ports policy he introduced as interior minister that year and calling for the immediate disembarkation of hundreds of rescued migrants and refugees being kept onboard the coast guard ship Diciotti.
The League said the video showed that the judge was biased.
On Sunday another judge rejected six other detention orders.

‘Consider waving of Palestine flag as a criminal offense as it indicates support to Hamas’: British Home Sec Suella Braverman tells police

Palestine flags in London, inersts: Suella Braverman and Rishi Sunak, images via ME Eye and India Today

On Tuesday (10th October), the home secretary Suella Braverman issued a letter discouraging the citizens from waving the Palestine flags in the country. The letter read that waving a Palestinian flag on British streets may not be legitimate if it is done to show support for acts of terrorism.

The home secretary asked chief constables in England and Wales to crack down on any attempts to terrorize or harass members of the Jewish community using flags, songs, or anti-Israeli symbols.

“It is not just explicit pro-Hamas symbols and chants that are cause for concern. I would encourage police to consider whether chants such as: ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’ should be understood as an expression of a violent desire to see Israel erased from the world and whether its use in certain contexts may amount to a racially aggravated section 5 public order offense,” the official letter read.

It added that pro-Palestine symbols at anti-Israeli demonstrations should also be seriously dealt with by the constables. “Context is crucial. Behaviors that are legitimate in some circumstances, for example, the waving of a Palestinian flag, may not be legitimate such as when intended to glorify acts of terrorism. Nor is it acceptable to drive through Jewish neighborhoods, or single out Jewish members of the public, to aggressively chant or wave pro-Palestinian symbols. Where harassment is identified, I would encourage the police to take swift and appropriate enforcement action,” Braverman said.

The home secretary also noted that Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organization and anyone extending support to Hamas, inviting support for Hamas, arranging meetings in support of Hamas, and publishing articles and images in support of Hamas will be considered as a criminal offense.

“I encourage all chief officers to ensure that any protests which could exacerbate community tensions by way of offensive placards, chants, or behaviors that could be construed as incitement or harassment, have a strong police presence to ensure perpetrators are appropriately dealt with and that communities feel protected,” she wrote.

While the decision to arrest is an operational matter, the home secretary urged the constables to ensure that forces are used to prevent disorder and distress to the communities and that the officers should act if there are any incidents that stray into criminality.

Braverman’s letter came after Rishi Sunak pledged that anyone in the UK who supported Hamas would be held to account in the aftermath of the brutal attack on Israel. During a visit to Staffordshire on 10th October, the prime minister stated that the government was ready to assist any British residents in need.

Sunak reiterated his support for Israel, declaring his solidarity with the country and its people in the face of these barbaric acts of terrorism. Sunak said he was unequivocal with them that we will make sure that they feel safe at this time during his visit to a synagogue in north London on 9th October night.

“Police have been given very clear guidance and advice from the government to do everything that they can to keep the community safe. Officers will clamp down on any behavior that falls foul of the law”, Sunak was quoted as saying.

“I’d just remind everyone that Hamas is a proscribed terrorist organization. People should not be supporting Hamas and we will make sure that we hold people to account if they are,” he reiterated.

The Hamas who has been opposing the very idea of the formation of Israel, launched a deadly attack on 7th October on Israel killing thousands. In response to the brutal terrorist attack on Israel that killed over 900 civilians and wounded over 2,500 others, Israel has declared war on Hamas and has been pounding the Gaza Strip with bombs for 3 days now. The UK, US, and other NATO nations have declared support for Israel.

Hundreds of Israelis and foreign nationals are believed to have been taken hostage by Hamas. Hamas has massacred civilians brutally after attacking a music festival, and family homes in Southern Israel. Social media posts have surfaced where Hamas terrorists are seen killing children, women, and the elderly. The exact number of hostages is yet unknown.
