The police mugshot is hard to bear: it shows a rapist laughing as he reaches for his victim (23). Immediately afterwards, he dragged the young woman to the ground and abused her. The perpetrator is on the run, an international manhunt is underway.
The police also found it difficult to publish the photo. The public prosecutor’s office and the examining magistrate hesitated for months. They wanted to spare the victim the sight. But the alleged perpetrator, who had already struck at the end of last year, remained as if he had vanished completely into thin air. It is possible that he is no longer in Germany and has long since fled to neighbouring countries.
A judge has now decided to release the photo after all search efforts had come to nothing. The picture shows the full-bearded rapist, who is only about 1.65 metres tall, wearing a black baseball cap and a light-coloured half coat on the night of the crime.
There is another photo taken by a surveillance camera in the middle of the night. Only 600 metres away from the later crime scene, the urgent suspect is lounging around in a bus shelter in the Luisenplatz area. It looks like he was already waiting there for a suitable victim.
