There’s a reason I often trust the internet more than my own doctors

Poirot, screen grab ok.ru

I don’t know if we’ve all been there, but far too many people have been dismissed by their doctor with comments like “You’re just stressed,” or “You need to lose weight,” or the worst of all, “It’s all in your head.” There’s even a term for it: medical gaslighting. Medical gaslighting can happen to anyone, but women are especially vulnerable to doctors disparaging our aches and pains as nothing more than hypochondria.

This increasing tendency of doctors to ignore their patients has led to the creation of organizations like the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine. Numerous articles address the problem, such as this one from WebMD: How to Talk to Your Doctors When They Don’t Listen. Even the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) is giving advice to doctors, stressing the surprising (or perhaps not so surprising) finding that

The overwhelming number of people who suffer an injury due to negligence from a physician never file a malpractice suit at all. Patients don’t file lawsuits because they’ve been harmed by shoddy medical care. Patients file lawsuits because they’ve been harmed by shoddy medical care and … they were rushed or ignored or treated poorly.

I have an autoimmune disease, polymyalgia rheumatica. I take prednisone for it. Between the autoimmune disease and the treatment, I am especially vulnerable to fungal infections and to serious and potentially fatal complications of fungal infections.

I recently developed a case of oral thrush. The doctor prescribed fluconazole, the first choice of medication for yeast infections all through the body. Unfortunately, he wasn’t paying enough attention to what he was doing to prescribe the appropriate amount and duration of fluconazole.I wondered why I had a relapse so soon after the medicine was gone, so I looked it up and discovered for myself what the proper dosage and duration of fluconazole was for oral thrush. I went back to the doctor, presented him with the information, and got the right prescription. It certainly is a conundrum that with all the cutting-edge medical technology, the most important piece of equipment, the doctor’s ears, don’t seem to work anymore.

Germany: African urinates on homeless people and videotapes everything

Düsseldorf main station, Wgrm1981, CC-BY-SA-3.0

It was a degrading act: a young man of Nigerian origin peed on several homeless people. When a victim defended himself with a beer bottle, the migrant pulled out a gun. Later he also attacked the police officers when they caught him.

At 1 a.m. this attack on homeless people took place in Düsseldorf. The suspect was walking with two companions near the main railway station when he passed a group of homeless people. One of the homeless people allegedly accosted the man, who has both German and Nigerian citizenship. The young man then took his mobile phone and filmed himself urinating on several people there.

One of the homeless men finally attacked the man with a raised beer bottle. The man who was pissing pulled out a firearm and later fled with his two companions. The police launched a manhunt and caught the trio a short time later.

The 18-year-old man, who lives in Hamburg, had to be taken to the police station. There he insulted and threatened the officers and was physically aggressive. According to the police spokesperson, he had to be brought to the ground by the officers. A search revealed that he was carrying a firearm. His mobile phone was seized and the video secured, the investigation is ongoing.

Germany: African man ignites woman’s hair in tram – police botch manhunt

Kurt Rasmussen, Wikimedia Commons

The incident had caused outrage nationwide. But the cowardly perpetrator probably gets away with it – he benefits from a mix-up.

On January 18, 2023, a woman (26) was travelling on tram line 5 in the direction of “Südblick” in the Rostock district of Evershagen. At around 7.25 p.m. the unthinkable happened: a man sitting behind her held a lighter to her hair!

“After the young saleswoman noticed a small cloud of smoke and the smell of burning on her head, she jumped up and left the train at the Ehm-Welk-Straße stop,” police said at the time. Her hair had been singed by the deliberate ignition. It’s hard to imagine what would have happened if the woman had used hairspray or something similar. Something like that could have acted like an accelerant.

The police immediately launched a manhunt for the unknown man. According to the victim, he was an African man, 25 to 40 years old and 1.70 to 1.80 metres tall. The dark-haired man with a three-day beard had been wearing loose dark trousers and a yellow-orange hooded sweatshirt at the time of the crime.

Whether he can ever be caught is now more than questionable. The police had secured the wrong video recordings! “There was a mix-up of the trams,” says police spokesman Martin Ahrens. The victim had unfortunately made a mistake during the first interrogation.

By the time the correct tram in which the hair attack had been committed was finally identified, it was already too late. The video recordings of the trains are deleted after 24 hours.

Police spokesperson Ahrens: “The police investigation measures have been exhausted. We have now given the case to the public prosecutor’s office for further decision.”

Presumably the case will be closed in the near future.

The Troubling Islamist Connections of Scotland’s Leader

twitter

Yousaf first came to the public’s attention in the late 2000s while serving as an aide to former SNP leader Alex Salmond and other senior party leaders. At this time, Yousaf was also running the Scottish Islamic Foundation (SIF), along with his cousin, Osama Saeed.

In 2010, the Quilliam Foundation, a (now-defunct) Muslim-run counter-extremism organization, prepared a list for the British security officials warning that SIF was an “entry level” Islamist group that contributed to the threat of radicalization and extremism within British Islam.

Parliamentary questions have revealed that Yousaf and Saeed, through SIF, brought extremists to meet with senior Scottish politicians. In 2008, Yousaf organized a meeting with Scotland’s Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture, featuring three prominent Islamists: Mohammed Sawalha, Anas Altikriti and Ismail Patel.

Record of an SNP meeting organized by Humza Yousaf, featuring Hamas commander Mohammed Sawalha and other hardline Islamists

Two years earlier, Sawalha had been named by the BBC as a fugitive Hamas commander; and indeed, Sawalha later became a member of the terror group’s political bureau. As for Anas Altikriti, he has long served as a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in both the UK and Iraq, and in 2006 he reportedly praised Iraqi “resistance” against British and American troops in Iraq.

Ismail Patel, meanwhile, is another supporter of Hamas, and had already, at the time of the meeting, established a reputation for hardline Islamism, including advocating the killing of adulterers and punishment for “free mixing of men and women.”

Yousaf’s involvement with Scottish nationalism served the interests of SIF. In 2010, opposition parties called for an investigation into the SNP’s decision to give £400,000 of Scottish taxpayers’ money to the Islamist-run group.

Other Islamist groups continued to benefit from Yousaf’s influence over the SNP government. In 2013, Yousaf, now elected and serving as Scotland’s Minister for External Affairs and International Development, announced a £398,000 grant to Islamic Relief, one of the largest Islamist charities in the world, established by figures from the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

Critics claimed more cronyism was likely at work. Before his election to the Scottish parliament, Islamic Relief had appointed Humza Yousaf as its “Media Spokesperson.”

European and Islamic governments have denounced Islamic Relief because of the anti-Semitism of its officials and its long history of close ties to Hamas and other designated terrorist groups. In 2020, the State Department warned about the “blatant and horrifying anti-Semitism and glorification of violence exhibited at the most senior levels of Islamic Relief Worldwide.”

Yousaf’s cousin and SIF colleague, Osama Saeed, is himself a notorious Islamist operative, who also once stood as SNP parliamentary candidate. In 2005, he called for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. And in 2006, Saeed voiced praise for Al Qaeda operative Anwar Al-Awlaki, writing: “Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki was originally hounded in the US because two of the 9/11 bombers happened to pray at his mosque. … He preached nothing but peace, and I pray he will be able to do so again.” Al-Awlaki later became leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, before his death in a 2011 drone strike.

The extent to which Yousaf shares his cousin’s extremism is unclear, although the two remain close.

Moroccan people smuggler established ‘kingdom’ in Serbia, described as a ‘fake state that issued fake passports’

In Serbia, several smuggling networks have recently operated and are still operating, one of which has grown so strong it has established its own “kingdom” in Vojvodina, named after one of the leading traffickers, Mohammed Tetouani, reports Hungarian-language, Balkans-oriented news site Balk.hu.

Mohammed, who was the leader of one of the smuggling gangs in Vojvodina, hails from the Mediterranean port of Tetouan in northern Morocco. He set up his own “haraba,” or smuggling camp, near Horgos, which was dismantled by Serbian police in November 2022. Due to Mohammed’s network being located near Horogos, his criminal enterprise began to be known as the “‘Kingdom of Horgos.”

For more than two years, this haraba had been a temporary home for thousands of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa while they waited for smugglers to take them across the Hungarian-Serbian border, which was just “a few steps” from the so-called Kingdom of Horgos.

“I have heard of the haraba. They said it was a good place to stay, but when I went there I saw that it was not true, it was like a jungle,” a migrant named Magbul, who came from Syria, told Belgrade’s N1 television.

The “fake state has also issued fake passports,” which migrants needed to reach Europe after Tetouani’s gang takes them into the “promised land.”

In the haraba, when migrants pay the €3,000 fee, they can spend a day or two, or maybe three, while the bosses get everything ready and send the migrants to the border, added Magbul, who noted that if you do not have money, you have no chance of getting further because it’s very difficult to cross the border alone.

According to EU border agency Frontex, “The Western Balkan route has been one of the main migratory paths into Europe due to the influx on the Eastern Mediterranean route. After the record number of arrivals in the European Union in 2015, the number of irregular migrants choosing this route fell steadily for a few years and then started to pick up again from 2019 onwards.”

According to those familiar with the situation, there was only one person living in the “kingdom” who made sure that people had enough food and water, that everything was running smoothly and that there were no conflicts.

One Syrian migrant told the documentary’s producers that “the bosses had subordinates,” usually young people aged 18 to 20, who were allowed into the official camps as workers.

“Yes. They also have people there, officials or others. Everywhere. In Serbia, they have people everywhere,” said an unnamed migrant, who also said that the “bosses” may have been in contact with Hungarian police.

“The bosses have contacts, I don’t know exactly with whom, but they might have contacts with Hungarian police officers, I don’t know exactly. But they have their methods. Every patrón (chief) has a way of getting across the border,” added the migrant, who said that these methods have been developed to perfection by the bosses.

Mohammed’s “kingdom” was eventually disbanded last November, following an hours-long shootout between rival migrant gangs in the Hungarian-inhabited village of Horgos. Police emptied the haraba of the 600 migrants stationed there and arrested the smugglers.

According to Serbian media, there are at least another four similar harabas, also run by Moroccans, in northern Serbia, close to the Hungarian border.

The martyrdom of Donald J. Trump

By Mark C. Ross

Were it not for the crucifixion of Jesus, there’d be no Christians.  Such a dramatic end of a narrative ensured the historic importance of its subject.  This is now happening in the case of former president Donald Trump.  The process began when the FBI raided his personal residence at Florida’s Mar-a-Lago.  The heavy-handed nature of the raid revealed its overt political nature.

Now Manhattan’s district attorney, Alvin Bragg, has been leading a tortured attempt to make Trump a criminal.  Bragg recently claimed that Trump’s revelation of a likely indictment is the real cause for all of the furor over the proceedings of Bragg’s grand jury.  Should this actually be the case, then Trump is even more clever than he was thought to be.  A quick look at the early pollingfor next year’s election supports this possibility.  Again, martyrdom sells.

Meanwhile, Bragg’s office is trying desperately to stuff this toothpaste back into the tube.  The problem is that everybody’s watching from front row seats — while all of these rodents scurry around.  And many already know that there’s overwhelming evidence that Trump never even came close to committing a crime.

Leaked information confirms that Trump has been indicted.  Apparently, yesterday’s earlier announcement that the Manhattan grand jury was taking a month’s hiatus was intended to lull the Trump camp into complacency.  But is Trump really being damaged?  Or is this furthering the compelling drama of his martyrdom?

It is fortunate for America’s destiny that Mr. Trump is pretty good at taking a punch.  It is problematic, however, as to whether he may respond with sufficient elegance.  But then again, he didn’t rise to the top of the food chain by bungling opportunities.

I kind of sense a renewed enthusiasm for the troops to rally around him.  History is full of turning points — and this may be one.  Fence-sitters such as the Romneys of the world may have to throw in their lot with The Donald in order to avoid being excluded from the club.  You can also throw in the marginal Democrats such as Manchin and the recently reminted Sinema.

I would here like to pause and complain that there’s way too much politics bedeviling our lives.  But if we tune this garbage out, we may be enabling the forces of evil to further diminish the quality of our existence.  So the saga continues.

I was only recently listening to “Lyin’ Ted” Cruz extol Trump’s virtues, etc.  Such is the quality of Trump’s support.  Cruz just expressed optimism for the outcome.  He is claiming that the New York law that makes paying hush money can, at worst, be creating a false business record, which is a misdemeanor.  The catch, however, is that there’s a two-year statute of limitations…on an event that occurred seven years ago.

My dilemma concerns the future.  Another Trump presidency doesn’t sound all that bad.  But what about another Biden presidency?  Oy, vey!  As the legendary Vince Lombardi, head coach of the Green Bay Packers, famously said: “Winning isn’t the most important thing.  It’s the only thing.”

Pakistan: 124 including 81 Hindu women forcefully converted to Islam in the year 2022, 58% were minors

The abduction and forced conversion of girls belonging to minority communities continue unabated in Pakistan. Recently, a Human Rights Observer 2023 fact sheet revealed that in the year 2022, as many as 124 women belonging to minority communities were forcefully converted to Islam in the Islamic country. Out of this, 81 were Hindu, 42 were Christian and one was Sikh.

Further, the fact sheet revealed that 23 per cent of girls were below 14 years of age, 36 per cent of them were between the age of 14 and 18 years, and only 12 per cent of the victims were adults, while the age of 28 per cent of the victims was not reported.

In 2022, 65% of cases of forced religious conversion were reported in Sindh, 33% in Punjab, and 0.8% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, respectively.

The fact sheet stated that the religious content against minorities increased in curriculum and textbooks throughout the year 2022, and a number of perennial and new challenges emerged in the education system.

The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) released a report that addressed five key issues affecting religious minorities, including discrimination in the education system, the prevalence of forced faith conversions, the abuse of blasphemy laws, the establishment of the National Commission for Minorities, and jail remissions for minority prisoners.

According to the data report, 171 people were charged under the blasphemy laws, with Punjab accounting for 66% of the cases and Sindh accounting for 19%.

The districts of Karachi had the highest occurrence, followed by Chiniot, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Dera Ghazi Khan, Nankana Sahib, Lahore, and Sheikhupura.

Notably, in January this year, experts at the United Nations expressed grave concern about the alarming rise in kidnappings, coerced marriages, and forced conversions of minor girls belonging to religious minority communities in Pakistan. They called for immediate action to ensure justice for the underage victims.

“Perpetrators must be held fully accountable…We are deeply troubled to hear that girls as young as 13 are being kidnapped from their families, trafficked to locations far from their homes, made to marry men sometimes twice their age, and coerced to convert to Islam, all in violation of international human rights law,” the experts said.
