War on churches and history: French politicians are now even demolishing 1,000-year-old churches

In Quelaines-Saint-Gault in the Mayenne department, an 11th-century church is being demolished following a decision by the local council. As restoration is considered too costly, the building is to be replaced by a memorial garden, despite opposition from its supporters, who complain of a lack of political will.

For several months, villagers and a mayor have been arguing about the future of a dilapidated church in Quelaines-Saint-Gault in the Mayenne department (photo). Built in the 11th century and restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, the church has an unusual interior, notably a gallery decorated with a beautiful painted wooden lambrequin. Incidentally, the consecration stone is still attached to the altar and bears the seal of Cardinal Suhard, the former Archbishop of Paris.
