According to information released so far by the Vienna police, a 19-year-old Syrian national is alleged to have pulled out a folding knife during an altercation on Taborstraße and injured four men aged between 18 and 22. Officers from the Praterstern police station became aware of the incident whilst on patrol. Initially, it was reported as a brawl; it was only upon arrival at the scene that the situation was identified as a knife attack. Additional police forces from the Innere Stadt and Brigittenau city police stations were then called to the scene.
The 19-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene. The knife believed to have been used in the attack was seized.
The four injured people were given first aid by the Vienna Ambulance Service and taken to hospital. The motive for the attack is currently unclear. Further investigations are being carried out by the Vienna State Criminal Investigation Office, Centre/East branch.
