Survey: Germans say Islam has a serious problem with extremism

According to a majority of Germans, Islam has a bigger problem with extremism than other religious communities. 61 per cent of those surveyed agree, according to a poll conducted by the Insa opinion research institute on behalf of the Protestant news agency Idea. 13 per cent disagreed with the statement, 19 per cent answered “don’t know” and seven per cent made no statement.

There are differences above all with regard to the age and denomination of the respondents as well as between East and West Germans. While 63 percent in the West believe that Islam has a greater extremism problem, 55 percent in the East do. Among the over-50s, 67 percent agree, and among the 18-29 year-olds, 49 percent agree. More men (69 per cent) than women (54 per cent) also share this opinion.

Among Christian denominations, Protestants (68 per cent), followed by Catholics (62 per cent) and Free Church members (55 per cent) agreed most with the statement. Among Muslim respondents, on the other hand, only a minority (29 per cent) agreed, while among the undenominational a majority (66 per cent) agreed.

Among party supporters, 80 per cent of AfD voters considered Islam to be the biggest extremism problem. This was followed by those of the FDP (75 per cent), the CDU/CSU (70 per cent) and the SPD (62 per cent). A majority of supporters of the Greens (58 per cent) and the Left Party (60 per cent) also agreed with the statement.
