Survey among Germans: Islamism greatest Danger for Jews

A majority of Germans see Islamism as the greatest anti-Semitic threat. At the same time, almost every second German says they have never come into direct contact with Jewish life in Germany.

This is the result of a survey jointly presented by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Orthodox Rabbinical Conference of Germany. 10,000 German citizens aged 18 and over were surveyed.

According to the survey, the majority of respondents (42.7 per cent) see the greatest anti-Semitic danger on the Islamist side, closely followed by the political right (35.4 per cent).

Only just over one in ten sees the greatest anti-Semitic danger coming from the centre of society; only 4.4 per cent see anti-Semitism from the left as the greatest danger.

Particularly remarkable: 46 percent of the respondents said they had not ever encountered Jewish life in Germany before.

One eighth, on the other hand, said they had Jewish friends and acquaintances, 17.9 percent had already visited a synagogue. 18.7 per cent have learned about Jewish life through school.
