Berlin’s SPD parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh demands: Muslim hostility to be explicitly outlawed in the Basic Law. The initiative is causing new discussions about the status of Islam in Germany.
Will the Basic Law soon explicitly protect Muslims from discrimination? If Raed Saleh, head of the SPD parliamentary group in the Berlin House of Representatives, has his way, yes! According to the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, Saleh is calling for the rejection of hostility towards Muslims to be explicitly enshrined in the constitution – modelled on the protection against anti-Semitism.
‘Just as the Federal Republic of Germany has a history of outlawing anti-Semitism, it must also outlaw hostility towards Muslims,’ Saleh is quoted as saying. For him, it is clear that anyone who stands up against extremism must not look the other way when Muslims are discriminated against.
The background to this is the current discussion about religiously motivated hatred, especially after Islamist-motivated attacks such as the attack in Mannheim. Saleh makes it clear that protecting against Islamophobia does not mean trivialising Islamist terror. ‘You can fight Islamism and protect Muslims at the same time,’ he emphasises.
Whether the initiative has any chance of being implemented remains to be seen – but it hits a nerve. The tension between religious freedom, integration and extremism has been the subject of heated debate for years. In particular, there is also the question of who defines what the term Islamophobia really means.
