A temporary employee assigned to the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN) was exposed as a suspected spy. According to information from security circles, the man is alleged to have passed on secret information to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood – an organisation that is considered anti-constitutional in Austria.
DSN investigators had been monitoring the suspect for weeks. After a meeting with representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood, the officers finally took action. Due to the overwhelming evidence, he was immediately suspended. The man is now under investigation for intelligence activities to the detriment of the Republic of Austria. According to insiders, the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office is already preparing charges.

A spokesperson for the Office for the Protection of the Constitution emphasises that this is an isolated case. ‘The internal control mechanisms are working and have been effective in this case,’ says the DSN.
The Directorate for State Protection and Intelligence was greatly expanded after the reform of the former BVT and now employs around twice as many staff as its predecessor. Exact figures remain secret for reasons of national security.
