Prof Who Claimed Americans Made Indians Fat Lied About Being Indian – ”I am a white person”

I’m starting to suspect there are more fake Indians teaching at colleges than actual American Indians. And I don’t just mean Elizabeth Warren. Here’s another Elizabeth who shares Warren’s ancestry from the fabled Fakeaho people who roamed the plains and hallways of the Ivy League and hunted jackalopes in Atlantis.

Behold this courageous truth-teller.

American Indians and Alaska Natives are at least twice as likely as whites to have Type 2 diabetes, and they have 1 1/2 times the rate of obesity as non-Hispanic whites, according to the government statistics.

But these diseases didn’t become prevalent until tribes adopted a more processed Western diet, notes Elizabeth Hoover, who is of Mohawk and Mi’kmaq ancestry and teaches about indigenous food movements at Brown University.

Hoover, who is writing a book about Native American efforts to reclaim their traditional food culture.

The article was predictably about bashing the Trump administration.

Hoover’s bio pictures tended to include her hair in a braid and wearing Indian jewelry. Like Senator Elizabeth Warren, the other Elizabeth built her career around a fake identity.

For much of Hoover’s career, going back to the 2000s, she told people she descended from the Mohawk and Mi’kmaq peoples of eastern Canada and the United States. She referenced this ancestry in news accounts and while researching her doctoral dissertation for Brown University.

Meanwhile, she won prestigious jobs, grants and fellowships, published books and papers and became a mover and shaker in the “food sovereignty” movement, according to the news site, Indianz.com. But in recent months, she’s been labeled a “Pretendian,” a high-profile figure in academia, publishing or entertainment who is accused of using a false Native American identity for money, fame or professional opportunities.

Hoover said she doesn’t plan to resign, despite a call for her to do so from more than 360 people, including other Native American scholars and activists, as well as current and former students from UC Berkeley and Brown. UC Berkeley said in December that it didn’t plan to remove her from her position. University officials told this news organization this week that it couldn’t comment on personnel matters.

Hoover used the familiar Elizabeth Warren ‘family lore’ excuse.

”I am a white person who has incorrectly identified as native my whole life, based on incomplete information. In uncritically living an identity based on family stories without seeking out a documented connection to these communities, I caused harm…

Growing up I did not question who I was told I was, or how I identified. But as an adult, as an academic, I should have done my due diligence to confirm that my ancestors were who I was told they were.”

And UC Berkeley is going with the transracial position that identity is whatever you identify as.

UC Berkeley said in December that it didn’t plan to remove her from her position. University officials told this news organization this week that it couldn’t comment on personnel matters…

At that time, campus spokesperson Janet Gilmore said the campus considers Hoover’s identity a “a deeply personal matter,” the Daily Californian reported. In a statement Wednesday, Gilmore referred to a step Hoover said she is taking to repair her relationships with colleagues and students…

Gilmore said the campus is “aware of and supports ongoing efforts to achieve restorative justice in a way that acknowledges and addresses the extent to which this matter has caused harm and upset among members of our community.”

Hoover should just blame the western diet for her behavior.
