The difference between left-wing radicals and neo-Nazis is only marginal: left-wing radical groups, including the student section of the Left Party, the anti-Zionist ‘Jewish Voice’ and the German Communist Party (DKP), are calling for a protest against the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial. Their perverse accusation: it is not anti-Israel enough. They also claim that pro-Palestinian activists are being criminalised!
According to a report in the Bild newspaper, radical left-wing groups are planning a demonstration against the Buchenwald concentration camp memorial, to take place around April 11 – the anniversary of the camp’s liberation in 1945. Under the slogan ‘Kufiyas in Buchenwald,’ the student organisation of the Left Party, the anti-Zionist group ‘Jewish Voice’ and the German Communist Party (DKP) are organising protests and lectures.
The trigger is a dispute over the wearing of Palestinian headscarves (kufiyas) on the premises. Last April, a woman was denied entry because she was wearing the scarf to demonstrate against Israel. A court upheld the ban. The Pali and Hamas supporter is a member of a communist organisation that praised the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023 as a ‘legitimate uprising’ and declared: ‘We can only admire this uprising; it is completely legitimate, as are all its means.’
The repugnant organisers accuse the memorial of having become a place of ‘historical revisionism and genocide denial.’ They criticise the management for not being anti-Israeli enough and for criminalising pro-Palestinian activists while allegedly spreading ‘Israeli propaganda.’
These intentions have been met with strong criticism. A spokesperson for the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation expressed concern that the commemoration ceremony would be ‘inappropriately exploited.’ The Federal Commissioner for Anti-Semitism, Felix Klein, called the planned demonstration a ‘new low in the all too frequent reversal of perpetrator and victim’ and condemned it as a ‘frontal attack on the dignity of the memory of the victims of the Shoah’.
The Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar existed from 1937 to 1945. Over 56,000 people, including many Jews, homosexuals and political prisoners, were murdered there by the Nazis. The planned left-wing protest links Holocaust remembrance to the Middle East conflict, which many find distasteful and disrespectful, to say the least. Others consider it simply perverse.
