The 21-second video goes viral on the internet. It shows a mob after closing time on Frankfurt’s Zeil, one of Germany’s top shopping streets. The fact is: the incredible scenes of two police officers being laughed at and jeered at by at least 15 youths are not fake!
“That was on the night shift from last Friday to Saturday. This is a patrol car from the 1st police district. The two colleagues were then able to continue their journey unhindered,” police spokesman Marc Draschl told the newspaper BILD.
And all this is supposed to be normal?
Jens Mohrherr (55), regional chairman of the police union in Hesse: “The video shows the increasing disrespect towards the police in our society.” Alarmingly, the number of attacks against police officers has risen by 20% in the last ten years – to around 4000 in 2022 in Hesse alone.
He then pays great respect to his two Frankfurt colleagues. “They behaved in a very level-headed, thoughtful and de-escalating manner,” says Mohrherr. That, too, has long been part of police training.
Mohrherr is convinced: “The provocation was inevitable. Just the slightest trigger would have been sufficient – and the mob would have gone berserk!
