A man has been arrested after a car was allegedly driven into a crowd waiting at a bus stop.

A 32-year-old from Azerbaijan was arrested in Giessen, Germany when a car ploughed into a crowd of people after first hitting two other vehicles.

Three people were injured, one of them seriously, in the incident which police said they are treating as an accident.

Officers remain unclear on how and why the accused drove into the crowd as a major police operation gets underway at the area near St John’s Church with a large section cordoned off while investigators work.

Police said: “Around 4.30pm, the driver of an Audi crashed into a bus stop, injuring three people, one of whom sustained serious injuries.

“Police currently believe the 32-year-old driver had been traveling along Westanlage towards Südanlage.

“At the traffic light at the intersection with Frankfurter Straße, he collided with two cars traveling in the same direction, continued along Südanlage towards Goethestraße, and then crashed into the pedestrians at a bus stop.

“The 32-year-old driver, from Azerbaijan and a resident of Gießen, continued driving along Goethestraße to Johannesstraße, where he stopped and was subsequently arrested by police.

“The exact circumstances of the incident are currently unknown and are the subject of an ongoing investigation.”
