Germany: “Greta Thunberg is Jesus Christ – police officers are accomplices of Judas”: The Easter message of the Protestant Church of Bavaria in the social networks has caused fierce protests

Greta Thunberg being Jesus Christ – police officers being accomplices of the “traitors”: The Easter message of the Protestant Church of Bavaria in the social networks caused fierce protests in the Free State. When even a chaplain of the vilified police remonstrated against it, the church backed down and had to apologise.

Traditionally, the Protestant Church has had a hard time in the diaspora among Bavarians and Catholics. All the more it has been trying to attract attention for years. This year in particular, it went completely wrong. At Easter of all times, the Protestants made a misstep concerning good taste that caused outrage.

On Twitter, the church posted a picture (above) that had been taken only a few months ago in the German lignite mining area. Fridays for Future frontwoman Greta Thunberg had travelled there specifically to demonstrate against the forced eviction of the last inhabited village of Lützerath. Like other activists, the police had to carry the Swede away. The photo circulated around the world.

While not even Thunberg reproached the officials, the Protestant Church of all places now felt compelled to comment on the action. They compared it to the “Judas kiss” mentioned in the Gospel, i.e. the betrayal of Jesus Christ: “One kiss. And then everything happens very quickly. That’s how the capture of Jesus happened at that time. And the end is known,” the Protestants wrote. The police officers were portrayed as accomplices of the “traitors”.

“Who would be those who imprison today? And those who would be imprisoned?” the Protestant church continues to ask provocatively. The posting rocked the boat, Bavarian politicians sharply criticised the remarks. Representatives of the police, whose colleagues were denigrated as “captains of the temple guard”, as “leading priests” and as “council elders”, were particularly affected. In other words, as those who once handed Jesus over.

After the Easter shitstorm, the church has been in sackcloth and ashes: “We did expect this meme to cause controversy. But we did not want any hurt. But these arose mainly in the ranks of the police officers, who wondered how the church could post “such shit”. We are sorry for that. And we apologise for that. We wanted to inspire, not agitate,” wrote those responsible.
The apology to the police was additionally given : “At the same time, we hear how tense the situation is with emergency forces who work for us as a society, defend our values and enable freedom of expression. If this post has made you have doubts about the church, we see that as our mistake. We apologise for that as well.” After all.
