In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, a group of six people attacked a thirty-year-old Mexican man in Munich, Bavaria, who was recognisable as a Jew because of his headgear. The group of six consisted of people aged between 20 and 29 from various Arab and African countries, according to the Bavarian police two women and four men, who initially insulted the man in an anti-Semitic manner.

According to the police, this insult then developed into a row that ended in a physical altercation, the exact course of which is the matter of further investigation. According to the information already known, the Mexican national was ultimately brought to the ground by the group, where several people from the group kicked him, even when the man had already been lying on the ground.
He was slightly injured and taken to hospital for outpatient treatment. Two people from the group of six – a man and a woman – were presumably also slightly injured by the Mexican and were treated at the scene by the emergency services. The people involved were allegedly drunk at the time of the offence.

According to the police, the suspects from the group of six are from Germany, Eritrea and Syria. One of those involved is said to have Yemeni citizenship. The individuals from the group of six are now being investigated for causing grievous bodily harm; the 30-year-old Mexican national is being investigated for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

In view of the circumstances of the offence, the police suspect that the insults and acts of violence from the group have an anti-Semitic background. This would make the case one of a series of attacks on recognisable people of Jewish faith. In July, for example, a group of five youths shouting “Allahu Akbar” attacked a group of Jewish visitors from the USA at the Jewish memorial in Frankfurt am Main.

In view of the obvious anti-Semitic motives in this attack, the anti-Semitism officer of the Bavarian judiciary based at the Munich public prosecutor’s office, senior public prosecutor Andreas Franck, took over the investigation.
