On Wednesday morning, a 41-year-old man triggered a police operation by brandishing a firearm. During the operation, officers fired their service weapons, injuring the 41-year-old.
Witnesses had called the emergency services to report that a man with a firearm was aiming at people in the Menageriestraße area and had then entered a supermarket. The Dresden Police Headquarters immediately dispatched officers to the scene, including special forces trained for life-threatening situations (LebEL).
Outside the supermarket on the corner of Menageriestraße and Berliner Straße, police officers spotted the man holding what appeared to be a musket, which he fired at the officers shortly afterwards. The police officers then used their weapons and wounded the man. He then shouted an Islamic slogan. The police subsequently arrested the 41-year-old. After receiving first aid from the police, he was taken to a hospital in Dresden.
No one else was injured. The suspect’s weapon was seized. Investigations are underway to determine whether it is a live weapon.
The suspect is a Turkish national. He is being investigated for making threats and breaching the Weapons Act. The 41-year-old’s motive remains unclear.
As part of the investigation, the lawfulness of the police officers’ use of their weapons is also being examined.
