A major police operation is underway after a man attacked several people with a knife at a major railway station in Switzerland.
Emergency services are in attendance at the Winterthur station after reports of a man running out of the concourse holding the weapon, shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
A spokesperson for the Zurich cantonal police confirmed that three people were injured with a bladed weapon, one of them seriously. The other two sustained moderate injuries.
An eyewitness told local media: “I arrived at the train station around 8.20am. I was on my way to the ZHAW to study. About 30 meters away, I heard a man behind me shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ five or six times in a very emotional and agitated manner.”
Another eyewitness said a teacher stood in front of a group of schoolchildren who were passing at the time of the stabbing to protect them.
One man waiting for a train was stabbed in the thigh, Swiss news agency SRF reported.
Images showed officers patrolling the area, while a privacy screen appeared to have been set up on the concourse.
Officers confirmed to local media a 31-year-old Swiss national has been detained.
Roger Bonetti, the Zurich cantonal police spokesman, said: “The perpetrator was arrested by the police.”
