“It’s scandalous”: In Carcassonne, France, the statue of Christ is vandalised

The arms and legs of the Christ statue in Villalbe were cut off at the weekend. The city council of Carcassonne has filed a complaint and is currently waiting for an in-depth damage analysis before it can start restoration work.

Residents of Villalbe, a district of Carcassonne, got a nasty surprise at the weekend. The statue of Christ, a symbolic place for the faithful in the area, was vandalised. The legs and arms were cut off. City Hall was quickly notified on Sunday. “I don’t know exactly when it happened, but it is scandalous, we cannot accept this act,” reacted Lucien Flamant, who is in charge of Carcassonne’s municipal policy, building works and settlements.

(…) This situation personally affects the deputy, who is himself a Christian. “We are elected representatives and human beings, but we all have our faith. If I had seen the incident as a Christian, I would have cut off the legs and arms of the person who did this. The residents are also outraged,” he says.

(…) For its part, since the Christ figurine is made of cast iron, the city has contacted foundries that specialise in works of art and is currently still waiting for an analysis. “We will do everything we can to repair it and put it back on its feet, but I have no certainty, I don’t know if we can restore it properly”.
