After weeks of total inaction by the Spanish government, police, and military, frustration in Ceuta reached a boiling point. Then the police took action—against their own people.
According to Ceuta residents, the state had abandoned its duty to protect the border and left the inhabitants to their fate. Locals were therefore forced to intervene themselves to clear their beaches—only to be met with batons from the very police officers who had previously appeared helpless.
Following the historic mass influx in late July 2026, when over 72,000 illegal migrants poured across the border from Morocco in just 48 hours, Ceuta’s residents have experienced a total betrayal by the state. Despite the acute emergency, the military and national police remained completely passive, even though they maintained a heavy presence with military-grade weapons and armored vehicles. Large parts of the city quickly descended into chaos, with roaming crowds of migrants. The city was plagued by shop looting, acts of violence, tent camps, and human waste on beaches and streets. Residents were left entirely at the mercy of the African immigrants, without protection or support from the government in Madrid.
Police Finally Take Action
Eventually, the local population had had enough of seeing their public spaces and beaches occupied. On Friday, August 28, proactive residents took matters into their own hands to do the job the police and military had refused to do for a full month. They marched down to the beach, dismantled the illegal tent camps, and cleared the area of the migrants’ abandoned belongings. The migrants—who, according to Ceuta residents, had previously displayed the arrogant behavior of occupiers and acted with impunity—were now forced to flee. From a distance, they watched as their camps were torn down, thrown into the sea, or set on fire.
It was then—right in the middle of the citizens’ action—that the police suddenly appeared from their slumber. The very same security forces that had passively watched as the enclave was subjected to a massive invasion now mobilized at lightning speed, clad in full riot gear. The police formed a human wall on the beach to protect the illegal migrants and turned their batons against the local population. For the residents, the sight was as revealing as it was provocative: the state refused to halt a veritable invasion yet acted with full force against its own citizens when they attempted to restore order.
Enormous Public Support
The action in Ceuta has ignited a spark of resistance across the Spanish mainland—a phenomenon clearly visible in independent alternative media and on various social media platforms such as Telegram. In the days following the August 28th action, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in several major Spanish cities, including Madrid, to show their support for “the brave residents of Ceuta.”
On September 2nd, the people of Ceuta themselves staged a massive protest in their city. Of the city’s approximately 84,000 inhabitants, more than half are believed to have participated in or lined the streets during this historic, massive demonstration. Images and videos from independent media outlets show vast crowds filling squares and boulevards in numerous cities, protesting against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s socialist government.
Despite the monumental turnout, mainstream media and the government launched a coordinated disinformation campaign. Mainstream media outlets have deliberately fragmented the statistics regarding the massive nationwide protests and understated the number of participants in individual cities—an obvious attempt to downplay the deep and growing public anger. Critics argue that this is being done because Spanish authorities fear losing control over the narrative—and, by extension, the nation itself.
