Austria: Taxpayer bears the costs for artificial insemination of female asylum seekers

An insider sounds the alarm: Every year, taxpayers in Upper Austria pay for dozens of inseminations of women who have been granted asylum in Austria. So far, this is little known to the public. One reason could be that the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) could alienate many Christian and conservative voters with such things.

When a woman has an unfulfilled desire to have children, the last hope is often artificial insemination.

Since the costs for such an artificial insemination amount to several hundreds of euros, couples with poorer financial means often have to do without this last hope. For women with asylum status, there is another chance: the taxpayer pays for the baby-bearing procedure! Because, as an insider now reveals, dozens of inseminations are carried out every year at taxpayers’ expense.

“If the taxpayer pays for female asylum seekers to become artificially pregnant, then this is, strictly speaking, state-subsidised family reunification via the maternity clinic”, as the source bitterly stated to the weekly “Wochenblick”. The health department of the province of Upper Austria, led by the ÖVP, is responsible for this “alimentation”. Perhaps this is another reason why this use of taxpayers’ money has not been publicly discussed so far.
