Austria: Large-scale manhunt for armed Syrian in Vienna’s Favoriten district

This morning, police officers of the city police station Favoriten were alerted because a 20-year-old Syrian man was walking on the street with a knife. Shots were also reportedly fired beforehand.

At the scene, six men tried to describe the incident, which was not completely successful due to language barriers. One of the men – a 19-year-old Syrian – had gotten into an argument with his 20-year-old compatriot. Apparently it was about a document. The two men allegedly injured each other during a scuffle. The 19-year-old is also said to have been threatened with a firearm by his adversary. Afterwards, the suspect, who is still unknown, probably fled.

A large-scale manhunt was immediately initiated. However, although district forces, as well as forces of the task force, the Wega special unit, the police dog unit, the Vienna State Criminal Police Office, and also officers with knowledge of explosives and the police helicopter were deployed, the search remained unsuccessful.

The 19-year-old Syrian was then given emergency medical care by a Viennese ambulance service and could then be taken to a police station for questioning with an interpreter. The coordinated criminal investigation service of the police department Favoritenstraße is now conducting the investigation.
