La Dépêche

It was just before 6 pm when officers from the city police were on patrol in the Wilson district. According to Deputy Security Officer Emilion Esnault, quoted by La Dépêche, a person “gesticulating wildly” lunged at their vehicle. One of the officers, who was sitting in the passenger seat, then rolled down his window. At that moment, the man struck the inside of the vehicle with an object resembling an oyster knife.

“The arrest was extremely difficult. They seized the knife from him, but he still had two more on him,” reported the deputy security officer. According to him, the man shouted “Allah Akbar” several times.

“I get the impression that he was determined to murder our officers,” the officer added. The suspect was eventually subdued with the help of tear gas.

The outcome could have been far worse. Although the two officers sustained only cuts to their arms, “the tip of the attacker’s knife struck one of them on the neck, right next to the carotid artery, and his colleague’s bulletproof vest has a large tear in the side,” explained Emilion Esnault. The attacker, who was injured during his arrest, was also taken to hospital. His motives remain unclear. (…) The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) has not yet issued a statement in response to enquiries.
