They wanted to take advantage of the plight of people in south-west Berlin affected by the power outage. But an alert passer-by and officers from the 23rd riot police unit thwarted a gang of thieves on Saturday night.
According to police reports, the officers were approached by a witness at around 2 a.m. who had observed a group of men on Nieritzweg who appeared to be scouting out detached houses.

The officers discovered a white Fiat car parked on the street with a man sitting behind the wheel and the engine turned off.
A check revealed that the car had been reported stolen and that the number plates had also been stolen. The 34-year-old driver, of Arab origin, did not have a valid driving licence.
During a search of the vehicle, police officers found various burglary tools in the boot, including a hydraulic crowbar. The car and tools were seized, and the 34-year-old was provisionally arrested and subsequently checked at a police station. After his identity was established, he was released. A search is underway for his accomplices, who are currently unknown.
