Newsom and Merz in Wonderland

GROK youwatch

by Thomas Kolbe

California Governor Gavin Newsom is considered a friend of EU policy. His California resembles a European replica of Brussels’ climate-socialist fantasies, making him a natural ally of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The United States is a culturally deeply divided country. To put it bluntly: the woke, self-proclaimed progressive, socialist-leaning coastal regions clash with significant resentment potential against the traditionally shaped, still Christian-rooted and bourgeois world of the vast inland areas of North America. Another cultural fault line emerges when one considers the urban mindset of culturally unanchored milieus versus the stable foundation of rural communities.

Governor Newsom of the Democratic Party is a committed climate activist with a distinctly social-political orientation. This makes Newsom, with his pronounced progressive grounding, a natural ally of a corresponding European eco-socialist agenda.

It follows logically that German Chancellor Merz, after a rhetorical encounter with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, sought proximity to Newsom to secure dwindling confirmation of his own political course. For Merz, the economic fiasco, rising national debt, and imminent gas crisis are tightening the squeeze. With state elections approaching, any press appearance not exposing the political dead end his government has led the country into is highly welcome.

Rubio had previously outlined the European dilemma in clear terms at the Munich Security Conference: overextension through uncontrolled mass migration, what he sees as a grotesque fixation on pointless climate policies, and an abandonment of the core values that once made the West strong — a lean state, individual liberty, and market-oriented economy. Strong words directed at representatives of the current European Union, who see themselves on a crusade against traditional Europe.

Newsom is now expected to “fix” this. Merz’s demonstrative meeting with the West Coast politician was closely noted in Washington. Richard Grenell, the U.S. President’s special envoy for diplomatic affairs, called it perhaps Merz’s greatest misstep yet — a slight to the Trump administration, while European media framed it as a signal that the German government under Merz maintains a channel to Democrat-leaning U.S. politics, almost a form of parallel diplomacy.

This reveals a strategic hope: in Brussels, Berlin, and Paris, time is being bought, assuming that even a second Trump term would only be a temporary interruption of a comprehensive societal overhaul — a restructuring with collateral damage, but ultimately expected to succeed. They rely on the success of their military-industrial buildup and the delayed success of the green transformation.

Perseverance is the motto. An eco-socialist transformation to build a political control apparatus can only succeed if the U.S. and Europe cooperate closely, implement regulatory mechanisms and censorship policies together, and enforce Net-Zero policies, as practiced in California, without strong political opponents. Otherwise, capital flight accelerates, and the socialist project stalls amid the economic catastrophe currently unfolding in Germany.

Merz’s short meeting with Newsom, staged for the press, suggests that Berlin sees a high probability of Newsom becoming the Democratic presidential candidate in 2028. Naturally, Europeans are also expected to do everything they can in the upcoming November midterms, where a significant portion of Congress seats will be up for grabs, to strengthen the opposition to Donald Trump.

As in 2016 and 2020, activists from UK prime minister Keir Starmer’s Labour Party also supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in 2024, causing significant friction between Trump and London.

“Election intervention” — that is the euphemistic term from the U.S. The EU Commission carries out such actions almost as a sporting discipline. The allegation: Europeans not only intervened across the Atlantic but also in their own home elections in at least eight national campaigns.

A 160-page report by the U.S. House of Representatives from February claims the EU censored conservative and populist content on migration, gender policies, or COVID vaccinations, influencing election outcomes in favor of left-leaning groups. While the EU rejects these accusations, what has actually been implemented under the Digital Services Act may go far beyond what the U.S. could substantiate in its report.

This is classic EU policy and aligns with Newsom’s vision of a powerful state apparatus, capable of suppressing criticism of his homeless industry as well as his destructive climate policies. Newsom — the ideal partner for Friedrich Merz and Germany across the Atlantic?

In Berlin, Newsom represents the “other America,” effectively Europe in the U.S., a bridgehead potentially undermining the Trump administration. The latter recently ended its previous climate policies with a single stroke. Europe now stands largely alone with its Net-Zero emissions strategy, facing persistent capital outflows. Investments increasingly flow elsewhere, while the EU, as an over-regulated high-cost zone, loses attractiveness.

The EU and California — and similarly Canada — persistently pursue bringing key sectors, like energy, under stronger state control and forcing consumers and producers into binding regulatory frameworks through CO2 trading.

The parallels between California and the EU are striking. Beyond climate repression, Newsom pushes entrepreneurs and wealthy individuals out of California with ever-higher taxes toward more attractive states like Florida or Texas. Both Brussels and Sacramento stubbornly refuse to alter a single jot of this ideological crash course in the face of this exodus.

Merz, according to reports, leveraged the NATO narrative for bridge-building and partnership stabilization with Newsom: NATO is a shared competitive advantage, mutual trust is essential — and Newsom is exactly the right man to ensure it. Defiantly, Merz added to criticism from Washington that he chooses his conversation partners based on his own interests and decides autonomously whom to meet or not.

He wants a restart with the U.S., Merz said — a phrase that critics argue adds salt to open wounds. Remarkable, for a politician responsible for a country in the deepest economic crisis in its recent history, whose structural problems are further aggravated by his own policies.

This is particularly evident in climate policy: Merz remains steadfast on CO2 trading, the supply chain law, the costly replacement of fossil heating systems with heat pumps, and the combustion-engine ban. He pursues a continuous performative media strategy, misleading the public with rhetorical placebos such as alleged bureaucracy reduction or border controls regarding his true intentions.

These intentions point toward a future in which Brussels, a potential U.S. President Newsom, and a strengthened NATO jointly shape geopolitics as climate-socialist power blocs. At the same time, the last hope for Europe as a cultural cradle of civilization faces extinction.

As Spain prepares to legalize up to 1.3 million migrants, two brutal crimes highlight the cost of open borders

Two tragic cases highlights a disturbing pattern of gender-based violence that has reignited a fierce national conversation in Spain. Both incidents involve foreign nationals — an Algerian man in Xilxes, Valencia, and a Moroccan man in Calella, Barcelona — and occur against the backdrop of a leaked police report suggesting the imminent legalization of roughly 1.3 million undocumented migrants.

In Xilxes, the community is mourning a woman and her 12-year-old child after the Civil Guard arrested her 39-year-old Algerian husband for breaking a restraining order. Police believe he slashed both their throats. According to investigation sources, the victims belonged to a family of deaf people well known in the town, according to Diario de Sevilla.

The woman was already integrated into the Viogen system, a specialized tracking network for gender-based violence, where her situation had been recently assessed as a “medium risk.”

The suspect had been issued a restraining order that was supposed to remain in effect until 2027, following a previous arrest for sexist violence last year. The judicial police are now working to clarify how the suspect was able to bypass legal protections to commit what appears to be a double crime.

Attack in Barcelona

Similarly, in Calella, a 24-year-old Moroccan man was arrested after a brutal attack that left his partner in a state of brain death and her mother in critical condition. The man is alleged to have used a blunt object to smash the daughter’s skull in, leaving her in a state of brain death.

The alleged perpetrator had been a fugitive for weeks until he was finally located in Onil after the Criminal Investigation Division issued a search and arrest warrant for double attempted murder, according to La Gaceta.

The events generated a strong social alarm in the area, where neighbors reported the extreme violence of the attack.

Police eventually managed to identify and proceed to arrest him when they verified that he had a court order in force, highlighting yet another case where a suspect with a known legal history committed an act of extreme violence.

1.3 million illegal migrants could be legalized

These types of cases have become central to a heated national debate in Spain following a leaked police report regarding the legalization of up to 1.3 million migrants. While the government officially estimated that 500,000 people would benefit from a new regularization decree, a confidential risk analysis from the National Centre for Immigration and Borders (CNIF) suggests the number could be more than double that figure.

These incidents have provided political ammunition for those critical of the mass regularization plan described in the leaked police document. Opponents argue that the 1.3 million figure, which includes roughly 250,000 to 350,000 asylum seekers, represents a risk to public order that the state is not prepared to manage.

The leaked report warns of a powerful pull factor and expresses fear of administrative collapse within immigration units. Critics use the cases in Xilxes and Calella to question whether the government can adequately vet such a large number of applicants, especially when current systems like Viogen failed to prevent the tragedy of a woman who was already known to be at risk

Foreigners vastly overrepresented in crime

As Remix News reported last year, the CEU-CEFAS Demographic Observatory report, titled “Demography of Crime in Spain,” examines the evolution of crime across various demographic groups and geographical areas in the country, and the researchers are warning about “imported crime” due to mass immigration.

Some of the key findings indicate that foreigners, who make up 31 percent of Spain’s prison population, commit per capita 500 percent more rapes and 414 percent more murders than Spanish citizens. The highest rates are seen among Arabs and Latinos, with many of them hailing from countries in South America known for their extremely high crime rates.

On a more regional level, the crime statistics are equally alarming. The Ertzaintza, the autonomous police force of Spain’s Basque Country, published its first report ever on the origin of detainees, with the data showing that 64 percent are foreigners, despite foreigners only making up approximately 14.1 percent of the population.

There were 80,111 crimes between January and September 2024, with 64.21 percent of those arrested being foreign nationals and 35 percent identified as Spanish.

For serious crimes like intentional homicide or murder, foreigners committed 53.8 percent of all such crimes. A total of 13 people were arrested and three were investigated. Six of those arrested were Spanish (either Basque or from other regions of Spain), and seven were foreigners. Two were from Maghreb and five from Latin America.

For sexual assault, foreigners were responsible for 68 percent of all cases.

For robbery with force, foreigners were responsible for 68.6 percent of cases.

For robbery with violence or intimidation, they committed 81.9 percent of all cases.

Judicial Activism or Justice? Italy Must Pay for Protecting Its Borders

AI generator

A court in Palermo has ordered the Italian state to pay €76,000 in compensation to the German NGO Sea-Watch for the 2019 seizure of its vessel, the Sea-Watch 3, prompting fury from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and reigniting tensions over migration policy and judicial activism.

The ruling concerns the dramatic events of June 2019, when the Sea-Watch 3 docked at Lampedusa in defiance of a government ban after spending two weeks at sea with dozens of migrants on board.

During the manoeuvre, the vessel knocked aside a police boat. The ship was subsequently impounded for five months, and its captain, Carola Rackete, was arrested. Proceedings against her were later dropped in 2021.

The ministries of interior, transport, and economy, along with Sicilian authorities, have now been ordered to pay damages and legal costs for what the court deemed an “unjust blockade.”

Sea-Watch celebrated the decision, declaring, “The law once again sides with civil disobedience.”

Meloni, who was not in office at the time of the incident but has since made border security a central plank of her premiership, said in a video statement that the ruling left her “literally speechless.”

She questioned whether judges were tasked with upholding the law “or rewarding those who boast about breaking it,” adding that her government would continue to defend “the borders and the safety of citizens.”

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also condemned the judgement, telling supporters on social media that Italians were being forced to pay “€76,000 of your money” to Sea-Watch. “Is this normal?” he asked, calling for a reform of the justice system.

The case has sharpened concerns within government circles that sections of the judiciary are sabotaging efforts to curb irregular migration.

In recent days ministers approved draft legislation allowing for a potential ‘naval blockade’ in cases of serious threats to public order or exceptional migratory pressure. The proposal would enable authorities to prevent migrant boats from entering Italian waters and transfer those on board to third countries.

NGO vessels frequently operate in sensitive search-and-rescue zones, including areas designated to Libya, while failing to coordinate with local authorities. Many of the ships active in the central Mediterranean sail under the German flag and have received funding from Berlin in recent years.

Macron criticises Meloni over solidarity statement on Deranque killing

French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly criticised Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after she expressed solidarity regarding the killing of 23-year-old French right-wing activist Quentin Deranque.

His comments today highlighted growing sensitivities within European political discourse.

Speaking from New Delhi during an international summit, Macron delivered pointed remarks aimed at his Italian counterpart: “Let everyone stay at home and the sheep will be well looked after,” he said, before warning that foreign leaders should refrain from commenting on France’s internal politics.

“I am always struck to see nationalists, who do not want to be bothered at home, are always the first to comment on what is happening elsewhere,” he added.

Macron emphasised that he was “following the situation closely” and insisted that “in the Republic, no cause, no ideology can ever justify violence”.

He called on political actors to prevent “any mechanism of escalation” that could inflame tensions further.

Meloni had condemned Deranque’s death as “deeply shocking and saddening”, stressing that “no political idea, no ideological opposition can justify violence or turn confrontation into physical aggression”.

She framed her comment as a gesture of sympathy and a denunciation of ideological violence across Europe.

Deranque, a mathematics student and right-wing political activist from Lyon, was killed on February 14 in a violent attack by far-left activists. The incident occurred on the margins of a student event attended by far-left MEP Rima Hassan.

Video footage circulated in French media showed masked individuals attacking opponents with blunt objects and kicking a person lying on the ground — Deranque. He suffered severe head injuries and died two days later in hospital.

French authorities have opened a homicide investigation and at least 11 people have been arrested, some linked to radical left-wing networks. Several detainees reportedly have political connections, further intensifying the political fallout.

The killing is particularly sensitive for Meloni and the Italian Right.

Italy experienced intense political violence in the 1970s, when young activists from both Left and Right were assassinated by opposing factions. Right-wing victims from that period, often killed in circumstances similar to Deranque’s, are officially commemorated as martyrs. Meloni has repeatedly expressed her respect and solidarity for their memory.

Macron’s rebuke surprised officials in Rome. They noted that Meloni’s statement was intended as a gesture of sympathy for the victim’s family and the French public, not interference in domestic affairs.

The exchange underscores European Union leaders’ sensitivities regarding commentary on politically charged events in partner countries.

Macron’s remarks reflect his insistence on framing violent incidents as matters of national sovereignty, even when it risks friction with fellow European leaders.

UK: Pedophile Who Avoided Jail Due to Transgender Status Now Living Near Multiple Primary Schools

A pedophile who twice avoided jail due to his self-declared transgender status is now currently living near multiple primary schools, according to information provided in a UK sex offender database. Peter Selby, 71, was told the “impact of custody would be significant” for him after he was caught with a significant amount of disturbing child sexual abuse images and videos.

Selby’s home address in South Shields, which is listed on a sex offender database, is within a close proximity to nursery schools and primary schools, as well as a public park where children gather to play.

Selby resides less than one mile away from a Catholic primary school and a nursery school, and just a short drive from a handful of other schools for young children.

In June 2022 Selby appeared in court and was found guilty on three counts of making indecent images of children, and one count of possessing extreme pornography. A forensic examination uncovered 125,000 child sexual abuse images and videos on his computer, some of which featured children as young as three-years-old, and at least one featuring an adult engaging in bestiality.

Selby gathered the sadistic collection over a ten year period, using internet search terms such as “pre teen” and “jail bait”. The sex offender confessed to owning the collection and told the court that his interest in adult pornography had “morphed” into looking at illegal images of children.

Selby faced the possibility of a maximum of 10 years in prison for the charges. Despite this, The judge claimed that if Selby, who identified as transgender, was put in prison, the “impact of custody would be significant” for him. Selby was therefore sentenced to 14 months suspended for two years, with the judge determining that he would be safer if placed among the community.

In the United Kingdom, a suspended sentence indicates that the offender avoids jail completely and is instead released into the community and expected not to commit another offense within the timeframe of their conditions.

According to the Shields Gazette, during sentencing on June 1, the presiding judge stated that no one would seek out child sexual abuse media “unless they have a sexual interest in children to start with,” yet declined to sentence Selby to an immediate prison sentence.

“You identify as transgender and that has caused issues for you and anxiety for you in how you would cope with that if you were sent immediately to prison,” the Judge said, adding: “You are someone who identifies as transgender and the impact of custody would be significant for you in the circumstances.”

Along with his suspended sentence, Selby was placed on the sex offenders register and made to sign a SHPO, stopping him from using any in-private browsing on his computer, or downloading VPN software that could hide his crimes, for the next 10 years. The lenient sentence prompted outrage at the time, prompting Conservative peer Baroness Nicholson to call for a review. She condemned the decision as representative of a “disregard” for child safety and speculated whether the judge had “overlooked” matters of child protection. Despite the uproar, Selby’s sentence remained suspended.

But less than a year later, in March of 2023, police visited Selby’s home to conduct a risk review, and discovered that Selby had downloaded VPN software intended to conceal his internet activity. Selby pled guilty to a breach of his SHPO, and appeared in front of Judge Robert Adams, wearing lipstick and with visible fake breasts, at Newcastle Crown Court that year.

Selby claimed that he had health difficulties, including problems with his memory, and told the court that he had no memory of downloading the VPN software to his laptop. No new child sexual abuse images were discovered on his laptop.

Once again, Selby’s self-declared transgender status shielded him from serving a prison sentence.

“You have been wearing women’s clothing for the last 30 years,” Judge Adams said. “Your family has distanced themselves from you as a result. You have no history of drug use and no drinking since 2013,” he continued. Because Selby had not offended again in the last two years, and that he would “undoubtedly be at risk of physical or sexual assault in custody because of [his] presentation in a male prison,” he got off with a 10 month sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with a £100 fine and rehabilitation program requirements.

Selby is not the first transgender pedophile to be given a lenient sentence only to end up living in proximity of children.

As previously reported by Reduxx, a trans-identified male who was convicted of possessing horrific child abuse material, some of which was in the most severe classification, was spared jail time after the court stated he was “cooperative” during proceedings. Tanya Howes, 66, was allowed to walk free despite living adjacent to a children’s park.

EU Parliament condemns Turkey for expelling Christian missionaries as ‘security threats’

The European Parliament has voted in favor of a resolution condemning Turkey’s expulsion of Christian missionaries.

On February 12, the EU legislative body adopted the text by 502 votes in favor, two against, and 59 abstentions, demonstrating broad cross-party consensus on the issue.

The resolution said Turkey is expelling Christians missionaries under an opaque “national security” pretext. It urged the government to uphold freedom of religion and allow the expelled Christians to return to the country.

Dutch Member of the European Parliament Bert-Jan Ruissen said during the debate, “You bring the good news of the Gospel, the message of peace and reconciliation through Jesus Christ. Then you are considered a threat to national security and are no longer allowed to enter the country. That is the harsh reality of missionaries working in Turkey.”

He called on Turkish authorities to “take freedom of religion seriously.”

“Turkey must stop targeting churches, guarantee freedom of religion or belief, and allow Christians to share their faith freely,” he stated.

According to Christian legal advocacy group ADF International, a minimum of 160 foreign Christian workers and their families have been expelled from Turkey or denied entry in the recent past. These families often lived in the country for decades.

These bans are issued under national security classifications and often without explanation or a legal remedy, making it impossible for missionaries to challenge their expulsion.

According to ADF International, about 20 such cases are currently before the European Court of Human Rights.

The resolution adopted by the European Parliament urged Ankara to ensure the fair and equal application of national security measures and called on the country to uphold its international human rights obligations, including freedom of belief or religion.

Turkey has repeatedly denied the accusations, claiming that they are “baseless” and “contradict the facts,” adding that “no foreign institution, including the European Parliament, can interfere in judicial proceedings conducted in our country.”

The resolution passed by the EU legislative body is not legally binding, but it applies diplomatic pressure and can prompt the European Commission and the EU’s diplomatic service, the European External Action Service, to discuss the issue with Turkish government authorities.

London teens lured into sex despite Sadiq Khan rejecting ‘indication of grooming gangs’ in capital

Teenage girls in London are being lured into sex and grooming gangs despite Sir Sadiq Khan’s initial rejection of such claims, it has been revealed.

Pupils as young as 14 have been reportedly raped by drug gangs that take sexual acts as “payment” in the capital.

Some of the girls and women were drawn into gangs solely for sex.

Detective Sergeant John Knox, head of the Metropolitan Police’s child exploitation team in the south London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, said girls and young women were the “lowest rung” in gangs.

He added girls inside gangs “cannot say no to sex” and they “have to do as they’re told”.

The officer explained girls were not exploited “predominantly and primarily for sex”, but “for everything, within that is sex”.

He believes there are at least 60 children in his community being exploited in some way.

Some could be as young as 13, but “15 would be the upper limit”.

A victim, who wished to remain anonymous, told the BBC she had been groomed by three men in London and was initially forced to deal drugs, but was then quickly forced into sex.

“I had no money, felt neglected and saw an opportunity to feel part of something so I made some bad connections and before long I was selling drugs on the streets… But that turned into having sex to keep people on side if we owed them, or (as an enticement for them to) buy drugs off me and the gang,” she said.

Another victim recounted how she was “getting passed around different men every night” at the age of just 15.

She said: “They just give us drink, give us drugs. Next thing I know, I’d just be in the bedroom with one of them. Then I’d come out. Could be another one. After that it could be another one. Sometimes it was only one. Sometimes it could be three. And then we’d just leave really,” she said.

She claimed all the men were “Asian”.

A third victim said: “It’s happening in London, and those who don’t believe it need to look again.”

In January 2025, Sir Sadiq was asked on nine occasions if there were rape gangs operating, either presently or historically, in London.

He insisted he was “not clear” what the question meant and, following clarification on the question with specific reference to the rape gangs in Rotherham and Bradford, the Labour mayor claimed he was “none the wiser”.

Sir Sadiq also last year said there was no “indication of (…) grooming gangs” operating comparably to that of Rochdale or Rotherham in the capital.

“The Mayor has repeatedly said on record that there are grooming gangs in London,” a spokesman for the Labour mayor has since said.

Conservative member of the London Assembly, Susan Hall, who put the question to the mayor last year, told The London Standard: “It beggars belief that we are being told London is the only place in the country where there are no grooming gangs.

“It’s absolutely outrageous that Sadiq Khan fails to take this seriously.”

In October of last year, Scotland Yard announced they would re-investigate 9,000 child sex abuse cases, informing the mayor alleged grooming gang and child exploitation cases from the past 15 years would make up the probe.

The review is part of Operation Beaconport, which is a national project to shed light on previous failures to combat group-based child sexual exploitation.

A spokesman for the London Mayor said: “Any individuals, groups or grooming gangs exploiting children for sex are utterly abhorrent and the Mayor wants justice for every single victim of these horrific crimes.

“Since taking office, the Mayor has led efforts to strengthen the protection of children from exploitation and harm in all its forms in London, including grooming gangs. Sadiq has driven forward long-overdue reforms in the way the Met protects children and delivered vital investment in specialist services to support child victims of sexual abuse and exploitation, including a new £2.4m package of support for victims and survivors to ensure they have the care, attention and specialist support services they deserve.

“The Mayor is clear that the Met must follow the evidence wherever it leads and he will continue to ensure it does everything possible to tackle all child sexual exploitation in the capital, including grooming gangs, to build a safer London for everyone.”

Syrian home care worker told 80-year-old victim her vagina ‘doesn’t look that used’ during home visit sexual assault in Sweden

Illustration. AI Photo Generator

A Syrian-born home care worker in the Swedish city of Vänersborg has been sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman under his care, according to a ruling by the Vänersborg District Court.

The 48-year-old man, a father of six who arrived in Sweden during the 2015 migrant crisis and obtained Swedish citizenship in October 2024, was found guilty of assaulting the elderly woman during a home care visit in August last year. As a Swedish citizen, he cannot be deported under current legislation.

SVT reported that the man must also pay the victim 100,000 SEK, around €9,440 in compensation.

According to court proceedings cited by Samnytt, the accused spent an extended period inside the woman’s home, during which he reportedly commented on her house, asked about her marital status, and inquired whether he could rent a room there.

The woman later told investigators the man pressed his finger against her genitals, saying he “drilled,” “pressed,” and “screwed” her vagina for what she estimated to be between 15 and 30 minutes. She also said the man commented that her vagina “doesn’t look that used.”

The victim reported the incident to another home care worker the following day and also informed a family member, after which the case was reported to police.

During police questioning, the man admitted touching the woman’s genitals but claimed the act was a form of treatment requested by the woman, saying he was applying lubrication at her request. The court rejected this explanation.

Investigators examining the man’s mobile phone also discovered pornographic material indicating a sexual interest in elderly women, including visits to a website known as “Grannyspace,” according to the verdict.

In addition to the sexual assault conviction, the man was also found guilty of assaulting his 13-year-old daughter and unlawfully threatening his first wife. According to court documents, he threatened to kill his wife in front of their children after she refused to share a bedroom with him.

However, he was acquitted on separate charges relating to child endangerment and an additional count of unlawful threats.

Social services in Vänersborg were already familiar with the family due to reports of domestic conflict, including allegations that the father physically punished his children and had entered into a second marriage under Muslim custom, which reportedly contributed to tensions within the household.

According to the court’s judgment, the elderly victim has suffered severe emotional consequences following the assault and has expressed that she no longer sees any point in continuing to live.

“For her, this has meant severe abuse. Moreover, it is by home care staff and in her home, where she has the right to feel safe,” the victim’s attorney Gunilla Johansson told SVT.

Instead of Ash Wednesday greetings: Austria’s Federal President wishes everyone a blessed Ramadan

Screenshot X

Today marks the beginning of both Christian Lent and Ramadan. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen commented on this on X – but the image accompanying his post is causing controversy.
This year, Ash Wednesday and Ramadan fall on the same day for the first time in almost 100 years. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen commented on this via X – but the official image accompanying his post has a striking focus.
It is a rare coincidence: the last time Ash Wednesday and Ramadan fell on the same day was on February 22, 1928, and this year, after almost 100 years, it is happening again. That is precisely why this date is receiving special attention.

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has spoken out on Platform X. In his post, he points out that both Christian Lent and Ramadan are now beginning. This time of year is an opportunity to pause, be grateful and be there for one another. He wishes everyone a peaceful time, marked by respect and active community spirit.

However, while the text strives for balance, its visual design is causing some debate:

The image published with the post bears only the message ‘Ramadan Kareem!’ in large, dominant letters.
There is no reference whatsoever to Ash Wednesday or the Christian fasting period. Furthermore, the subject matter, with its oriental-style lanterns and warm lighting, further emphasises this impression. ‘The majority of Austria’s population is Christian, and they should not be deliberately forgotten!’ reads one comment under the post.
