English Lit Students Can’t Read Novels, Film Students Can’t Watch Movies: Believe it or not, movies are joining novels as a niche art

You may remember the stories about how college students, even English Lit ones, had lost the ability to read novels.

Nicholas Dames has taught Literature Humanities, Columbia University’s required great-books course, since 1998. He loves the job, but it has changed. Over the past decade, students have become overwhelmed by the reading. College kids have never read everything they’re assigned, of course, but this feels different. Dames’s students now seem bewildered by the thought of finishing multiple books a semester. His colleagues have noticed the same problem. Many students no longer arrive at college—even at highly selective, elite colleges—prepared to read books.

This development puzzled Dames until one day during the fall 2022 semester, when a first-year student came to his office hours to share how challenging she had found the early assignments. Lit Hum often requires students to read a book, sometimes a very long and dense one, in just a week or two. But the student told Dames that, at her public high school, she had never been required to read an entire book. She had been assigned excerpts, poetry, and news articles, but not a single book cover to cover.

“My jaw dropped,” Dames told me. The anecdote helped explain the change he was seeing in his students: It’s not that they don’t want to do the reading. It’s that they don’t know how. Middle and high schools have stopped asking them to.

Faced with this predicament, many college professors feel they have no choice but to assign less reading and lower their expectations. Victoria Kahn, who has taught literature at UC Berkeley since 1997, used to assign 200 pages each week. Now she assigns less than half of that. “I don’t do the whole Iliad. I assign books of The Iliad. I hope that some of them will read the whole thing,” Kahn told me. “It’s not like I can say, ‘Okay, over the next three weeks, I expect you to read The Iliad,’ because they’re not going to do it.”

Can they watch movies? No, and while this is more about the study of film, film audiences are aging and it’s not just that Gen Z is less likely to go to theaters, they’re less capable of watching a conventional ‘film’ as opposed to the 300,000 spliced together fight scenes, close ups, special effects shots overlaid with ironic music choices and quips that make up a Marvel movie and have no coherent plot.

They watch podcasts and clips of things. Not movies.

Everyone knows it’s hard to get college students to do the reading—remember books? But the attention-span crisis is not limited to the written word. Professors are now finding that they can’t even get film students—film students—to sit through movies. “I used to think, If homework is watching a movie, that is the best homework ever,” Craig Erpelding, a film professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, told me. “But students will not do it.”

I heard similar observations from 20 film-studies professors around the country. They told me that over the past decade, and particularly since the pandemic, students have struggled to pay attention to feature-length films. Malcolm Turvey, the founding director of Tufts University’s Film and Media Studies Program, officially bans electronics during film screenings. Enforcing the ban is another matter: About half the class ends up looking furtively at their phones.

Akira Mizuta Lippit, a cinema and media-studies professor at the University of Southern California—home to perhaps the top film program in the country—said that his students remind him of nicotine addicts going through withdrawal during screenings: The longer they go without checking their phone, the more they fidget. Eventually, they give in. He recently screened the 1974 Francis Ford Coppola classic The Conversation. At the outset, he told students that even if they ignored parts of the film, they needed to watch the famously essential and prophetic final scene. Even that request proved too much for some of the class. When the scene played, Lippit noticed that several students were staring at their phones, he told me. “You do have to just pay attention at the very end, and I just can’t get everybody to do that,” he said.

Many students are resisting the idea of in-person screenings altogether. Given the ease of streaming assignments from their dorm rooms, they see gathering in a campus theater as an imposition. Professors whose syllabi require in-person screenings outside of class time might see their enrollment drop, Meredith Ward, director of the Program in Film and Media Studies at Johns Hopkins University, told me. Accordingly, many professors now allow students to stream movies on their own time.

You can imagine how that turns out. At Indiana University, where Erpelding worked until 2024, professors could track whether students watched films on the campus’s internal streaming platform. Fewer than 50 percent would even start the movies, he said, and only about 20 percent made it to the end. (Recall that these are students who chose to take a film class.)

After watching movies distractedly—if they watch them at all—students unsurprisingly can’t answer basic questions about what they saw. In a multiple-choice question on a recent final exam, Jeff Smith, a film professor at UW Madison, asked what happens at the end of the Truffaut film Jules and Jim. More than half of the class picked one of the wrong options, saying that characters hide from the Nazis (the film takes place during World War I) or get drunk with Ernest Hemingway (who does not appear in the movie). Smith has administered similar exams for almost two decades; he had to grade his most recent exam on a curve to keep students’ marks within a normal range.

Everyone grades them on a curve. And that’s the problem.

Matt Damon, the star of many movies that college students may not have seen, said that Netflix has started encouraging filmmakers to put action sequences in the first five minutes of a film to get viewers hooked. And just because young people are streaming movies, it doesn’t mean they’re paying attention. When they sit down to watch, many are browsing social media on a second screen. Netflix has accordingly advised directors to have characters repeat the plot three or four times so that multitasking audiences can keep up with what’s happening, Damon said.

Believe it or not, movies are joining novels as a niche art. The future will be some sort of interactive videogame that can be watched distractedly or interacted with in bite size segments. Movies, like novels, will be for a smaller and more discerning audience.

ROYAL FAMILY TROUBLE: Norwegian Crown Princess Under Fire for Being Featured in Hundreds of New Epstein Files, While Her Son Is on Trial Accused of Raping Four Women

Norway Crown Princess Mette-Marit and her son Marius Borg Hoiby.Screenshot X

The Princess is apologizing for her close Epstein ties, just as her son is on trial for rape.

The royal family in Norway is reeling with the repercussion of the latest – and probably last – document release on the Epstein files.

The three and a half million additional documents were released by the DOJ pursuant to the approval of the House Resolution 4405, the ‘Epstein Files Transparency Act’.

The released files cast a very negative light on Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

DPA reported:

“According to media reports on Saturday, the 52-year-old is mentioned several hundred times in the documents published by the US Department of Justice on Friday. It became known years ago that Mette-Marit had contact with Epstein.”

A visit to Epstein’s estate in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2013, is creating waves, as the Royal Palace confirmed that Mette-Marit had ‘borrowed Epstein’s house’ through a mutual friend, staying there for four days.

Guri Varpe, spokeswoman for the Norwegian royal family made a point to add that the crown princess ‘never stayed on the multimillionaire’s private island, Little Saint James’.

“On Friday evening, the crown princess apologized. She had ‘not checked Epstein’s background more thoroughly’, she explained in a statement released to several Norwegian media outlets. She said she had shown ‘poor judgement’ and regretted ‘having had any contact with Epstein at all’.

‘It’s just embarrassing’, she continued. She expressed her ‘deep sympathy’ and solidarity with the victims of the sex offender.”

Norwegian media says Mette-Marit met Epstein ‘several times’ in the United States and in Oslo in 2011 and 2013.

If that wasn’t enough, an email has surfaced from the trove in which former Bill Gates advisor Boris Nikolic appears to suggest that the woman who would become Norwegian Crown princess is pregnant with a baby from Epstein.

Email correspondence between Jeffrey Epstein and Boris Nikolic discussing scheduling a trip and mentioning a conversation about a person named Mette.

But as bad as the Epstein situation is for the Norwegian royals, the worst is yet to come, as Mette-Marit’s son goes on trial Tuesday (February 3) accused of raping four women, as well as drug and assault offenses.

CBS News reported:

“Marius Borg Hoiby, Mette-Marit’s 29-year-old son from a relationship before she married Crown Prince Haakon, has been charged with a total of 38 counts, some of which date back to 2018.”

Hoiby faces up to 16 years in prison if found guilty.

“’When it comes to the Norwegian royal family, it is without a doubt the biggest scandal’ in its 120-year history, Trond Noren Isaksen, a historian and expert on Norway’s monarchy, told AFP. ‘There have been controversies surrounding the choice of spouses, about renovations of the palace and these kinds of things, but never any real scandals involving criminal offences, let alone so many’, he said.”

Besides the four rape charges, Hoiby is also accused of physical and psychological abuse of several ex-girlfriends.

Frankfurt, considered Germany’s most diverse city, reveals how multiculturalism is failing

The train station area in particular is considered a crime hotspot. Google Maps

Frankfurt am Main has long championed its reputation as a “melting pot of cultures,” priding itself on being Germany’s most international and diverse hub, but the reality is that crime has soared and the city is more unlivable than ever.

As Bild newspaper reports, “No German city is more diverse, more international, or more colorful. But here, too, something has slipped in the last ten years – the cityscape has changed noticeably.”

Frankfurt’s main train station neighborhood is now notorious

One of the first sights newcomers see is the 53-hectare area surrounding the main train station, known as the Bahnhofsviertel, which has transitioned from an upscale commercial district to a focal point for social friction.

Jens Spahn noted in a Bild interview: “Look at a main train station, in Duisburg, in Hamburg, in Frankfurt. Neglect, drug dealers, young men, mostly with a migration background, mostly from Eastern Europe or Arab-Muslim cultural areas. This also has to do with irregular migration, as it looks in our city centers, in the marketplaces,” he said.

Local business owners have felt this shift firsthand. Bernhard Hahn, who moved his historic music store “Cream Music” in 2017 after over a century in the district, previously stated: “The most accomplished figures are coming to Taunusstrasse, seriously addicted people, drug tourists. The dealers are waiting for them. Our customers have to run slalom to come to us,” he said.

Today, authorities estimate that roughly 5,000 addicts are supplied by 300 dealers in the area, leading to 36 major police raids since 2024.

Four months ago, public broadcaster BR launched a documentary about the chaos in this district detailing how police are dealing with violent offenders often willing to use a knife or weapon, including on the officers themselves.

Famed Youtuber Kurt Caz also descended on the area, revealing just how brutal, violent, and dirty it has become, with his video earning nearly 8 million views. In other words, the problems of Frankfurt have gone mainstream to the point that they are attracting a global audience.

Changing demographics

Frankfurt’s population has surged to over 776,000. While foreigners made up 27.3 percent of the population in 2015, that figure rose to nearly 32 percent by late 2024. When including those with a migration background, the proportion reaches 58 percent.

Religious demographics have also drastically shifted, with Muslim residents now totaling 137,000 people while Christian residents are 218,000, down from 300,000 in 2010.

The city’s culture is also rapidly changing, with Ramadan street decorations now in place while traditional Easter customs have largely faded from public areas.

Crime has soared

Since 2015, crime has soared in Frankfurt, with foreigners responsible for the vast majority of serious crimes, amounting to 57.4 percent. It must also be noted that all Germans with a migration background are also not counted in these statistics, underlining that the problem is likely far worse when second-generation migrants are taken into consideration.

Since 2015, the number of brutality cases has gone from 9,115 to 14,258 in 2024. At the same time, rapes have nearly quadrupled, going from 436 to 1,623.

Police data shows that non-German suspects dominate in the crime data. They are responsible for 64.1 percent of all rapes and 100 percent of cases of serious sexual assault.

In addition, 51.5 percent of all bodily harm cases, 61.5 percent of human trafficking cases, and 83.3 percent of all forced prostitution.

When it comes to murder, foreigners are also killing at extremely high rates relative to Germans. Foreigners are responsible for 60 percent of murder cases, 54 percent of manslaughter cases, and 100 percent of serious sexual assaults.

Shopping districts in ruin

On the major shopping streets, including the famous Zeil, migrant youth gangs are making it more difficult for retailers to operate than ever.

Joachim Stoll of the Hessen-Süd Trade Association said that space is less and less in demand, with the famous Zeil now dotted with more and more vacancies.

In the evening, migrant youth gangs, known as “Talahons,” descend to these public areas, such as the Zeil, where they wear designer clothing and act “gangster” for TikTok videos.

A police investigator who spoke to build said it is “a completely new phenomenon that didn’t exist ten years ago. There were always teenagers, but this is different.“

Public spaces face increasing issues with littering and public urination. In response, Lord Mayor Mike Josef has significantly increased fines, including a €1,000 penalty for illegally dumping bulk waste.

The presence of police is now a common sight in these hot spots, leading to an atmosphere where residents often feel unsafe or even unwilling to venture out into shopping districts. The Frankfurt Christmas market is another once safe space that now requires millions of euros worth of bollards and security barriers.

“Frankfurt should become cleaner and more livable. Anyone who violates the rules will face noticeable consequences in the future,” claimed Mayor Josef.

However, for the people living in Frankfurt, there is little evidence of consequences.

Jewish life threatened

Jewish residents have also noted that there is an increasingly intense environment in the city. Since Oct. 7, 2023, there have been increasing anti-Israel demonstrations and anti-Semitic incidents.

“I pay close attention to what I wear – my clothes make it clear that I belong to the Jewish faith. There is an Islamist-motivated anti-Semitism that worries me. Because of this threat, I don’t always feel safe,” said Rabbi Zalmann Gurevitch.

Soaring rents

Frankfurt’s influx of hundreds of thousands of migrants has sent rent costs soaring to record levels while pushing many people to the periphery of the city. Although mass immigration is one factor of many, it is a primary driver of housing and rental price increases across Germany. After all, the population of Germany would have long since fallen to more sustainable levels if newcomers were not consistently arriving.

In fact, the rental situation is so bad in Frankfurt that documentaries from German public broadcasters declaring “Rental Madness” are appearing on Youtube.

Segregation is high

Frankfurt is often ranked inconsistently, with some surveys noting it is a great city to live in, while others, such as this one, report it is ranked as the second-worst city for expats to live in. However, like many cities across the West, there are tremendous differences between neighborhoods and living areas.

This has to do with segregation, with wealthier White Germans and other well-off foreigners, many from other EU countries, congregating in the suburbs and certain upscale neighborhoods. In fact, in one study from the journal Frontiers of Sociology, Frankfurt was determined to be the most segregated city in Germany, with foreigners tending to congregate in certain low-income neighborhoods.

If segregation is a sign of a failure of multiculturalism, then by this metric, Frankfurt is the greatest failure.

However, this is nothing new to the West. Often, the most multicultural and liberal cities, many of which pride themselves on being anti-racist, feature the highest levels of segregation. New York City, for instance, has the highest segregation in the educational system of any city in America, a fact that would surprise many who believe New York City is a “melting pot.”

If Frankfurt is the most diverse and international city in Germany, it does not bode well for the future of the country. Unless severe immigration policies restricting immigration come into play, this could be the norm in every corner of Germany within the next 10 to 20 years. In other major cities like Hamburg and Berlin, this reality is already mostly in place.

Violent Radical Leftists Brutally Beat Policeman During Protest in Turin

Screenshot of the video showing the assault on the Italian police officer in Turin on January 31, 2026
X, January 31, 2026

Turin, Italy saw scenes of extreme violence on Saturday during a demonstration agains the eviction of the illegally occupied Askatasuna anarchist ’social centre’ last December. The centre was shut down and the property seized at the end of last year by DIGOS, the General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS) of the Italian Police, after the centre’s activists took part in an attack against the headquarters of Italian newspaper La Stampa.

The Saturday protest quickly escalated and for about an hour, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., it turned into what the authorities describe as urban guerrilla warfare. Reportedly, at one point a large group of demonstrators pulled out homemade shields, and initiating a clash with the riot police. The violent mob burned garbage cans, and threw stones, fireworks and smoke bombs at the police.

A video shared on social media by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and former Democratic Party senator Stefano Esposito shows the moment a group of demonstrators surround and brutally attack a police officer, ten against one, kicking and beating him with a hammer. (Viewer discretion advised.)

The unjustifiable violence was immediately condemned by politicians across the political spectrum. Even Democratic Party (PD) General Secretary Elly Schlein, who normally tends to condone the agressive behaviour of leftist radicals, said what happened is “unacceptable.” PM Meloni strongly condemned the violence against law enforcement officers, declaring that the state will not back down in the face of extremist groups. She said

What happened today in Turin is serious and unacceptable. These are neither dissent nor protest: they are violent aggressions aimed at attacking the state and those who represent it. And for this reason they must be treated for what they are, without deductions and without justifications.

Meloni added that what the protesters committed should be considered “attempted murder.”

The Italian PM on Sunday paid a visit at the hospital to the 29 policemen recovering from the injuries they sustained during the attack by the violent mob, posting a picture of her shaking hands with the two most seriously wounded officers.

In her post on X, she said she has convoked a government meeting for Monday, to discuss new threats to public security and the new norms to be included in the Security Decree. She concluded by stating:

We will do what it takes to restore the law in this nation.

According to reports, the extremists also assaulted the crew of Italian state television Rai, who were beaten, threatened, and their equipment destroyed.

Encyclopedia Britannica relabels Israel as Palestine

Wikimedia Commons, ,CC-BY-SA-3.0 דוד שי

The Encyclopedia Britannica has removed a controversial map from its Britannica Kids section that labeled the entire territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea as “Palestine,” with no mention of Israel. The change followed complaints from the pro-Israel group UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) and an inquiry by The Telegraph, which highlighted concerns that the depiction erased Israel’s existence and echoed the politically charged slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

The original map, accompanied by a caption describing “Palestine” as the region between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, drew criticism for aligning with rhetoric used by pro-Palestinian activists and groups like Hamas. UKLFI argued in a letter to Britannica’s publishers that this framing promoted a modern political agenda and effectively denied the State of Israel’s presence in the same geographic area.

The controversy first gained attention in November 2024 when London-based Jewish children’s book author Shari Black flagged the issue directly to Britannica. She expressed surprise at what she called historical inaccuracies in content aimed at children, saying it appeared to push an agenda of delegitimizing Israel-despite the country’s establishment through international consensus.

UKLFI further criticized Britannica Kids’ broader historical references to “Palestine” as a term extending thousands of years back, noting that historians trace its use to Roman Emperor Hadrian in 135 CE, who applied it to the region (formerly Judea) after the Bar Kokhba revolt to diminish Jewish identity.

Britannica’s editor-in-chief, Theodore Pappas, responded to the concerns by saying the company would review the claims from UKLFI and make adjustments if necessary.

UKLFI Director Caroline Turner emphasized that retroactively applying the “Palestine” label across the region’s history distorts historical developments and creates a misleading sense of continuity.

After The Telegraph’s inquiry, Britannica removed the map and revised the entry to state: “Today the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip are located within this area.”

Leftist Leader Hails Great ‘Replacement’ of Conservatives with Illegal Migrant Amnesty in Spain

Ione Belarra. Pool Moncloa/Fernando Calvo, Wikimedia Commons,Ministry of the Presidency. Government of Spain,

The leaders of the far-left Spanish Podemos party celebrated on Saturday the “victory” of the mass amnesty for around half a million illegals and hailed the achievement as a step toward the “replacement” of right-wing Spaniards.

Appearing at a campaign event in Zaragoza, Podemos Secretary General Ione Belarra and the party’s leading Member of the European Parliament, Irene Montero, openly embraced the project of demographic displacement as an electoral strategy.

They explained that this week’s deal brokered with the Socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to grant amnesty to over 500,000 illegals was merely the first step and that the ultimate goal was to either grant them citizenship or to change the law to allow for migrants to vote in national elections, El Mundo reported.

Party leader Belarra compared the battle to allow migrants to vote to the women’s suffrage movement, saying that Spain has a “racist, property-based” voting system and that her party will “fight for migrants’ right to vote. If you live here, you have to have the right to vote here.”

While conservative and populist opponents of the amnesty have criticised the left for seeking to manipulate the polity to their own aims, Podemos MEP Irene Montero openly admitted as much, but claimed that it was righteous to replace her fellow countrymen.

“I wish for replacement theory, I wish we could sweep this country of fascists and racists with migrants, with working people,” she said.

“Of course, I want there to be replacement: replacement of fascists, replacement of racists, replacement of freeloaders, and that we can do it with working people, whatever their skin colour may be.”

Montero, who is widely expected to represent Podemos as a prime ministerial candidate in the 2027 general election, also admitted that the amnesty of the illegal migrants is ultimately intended to see them become voters.

“Of course, we want them to vote. We’ve obtained papers, regularisation now, and now we’re going for citizenship or to change the law so they can vote, of course,” the far leftist MEP said.

While the ‘Great Replacement’ has long been downplayed as a conspiracy theory by the legacy media, it has increasingly become a rallying cry for far-left politicians in Europe. Indeed, last month, French former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon also openly embraced the term, while boasting that around one in four French citizens has at least one foreign-born grandparent.

Responding to Montero, the leader of the anti-mass migration VOX party, Santiago Abascal said: “This is [Prime Minister] Sánchez’s plan. He disguises it more. But this is the plan of Sánchez and of Brussels. And it is being carried out there with the support of the European PP [People’s Party]. WE ARE NOT GOING TO ALLOW IT.”

Meanwhile, the leader of the centre-right People’s Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has called on Brussels to intervene to stop Madrid’s amnesty programme, arguing that due to the internal open borders of the Schengen zone, the mass regularisation of illegals would directly impact the other 26 member states. However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her European People’s Party allies have reportedly said that the decision will be left up to the Spanish government.

Critics have also warned that the amnesty could result in potentially millions more arrivals in Spain, through the familial chain migration process and by incentivising more illegals to enter on the hope of another future amnesty.

The mooted amnesty may prove to be a critical issue in the upcoming 2027 general election. According to a survey this week from Sigma Dos, VOX is projected to win 17.8 per cent of the vote, up from 12.3 per cent in 2023. The centre-right PP would win 32.4 per cent, slightly down from the 33.1 per cent they won three years ago. The combined strength of the two right-wing parties would be enough to control parliament and form a coalition government.

It remains to be seen if the PP will commit to overturning the amnesty if elected next year. However, party leader Feijóo said on Saturday: “The massive regularisation by the Government will put pressure on public services, strain the housing market, and create coexistence problems. Solidarity without control is an intolerable political negligence.”

Islamic centre in London caught selling Hezbollah phone cases

The Islamic Centre of England faces fresh scrutiny from the Charity Commission after it was found merchandise glorifying Hezbollah and the Iranian regime was sold at a public event on its premises | Islamic Centre of England – Google Maps

The Islamic Centre of England faces fresh scrutiny from the Charity Commission after it was found to be selling merchandise glorifying Hezbollah and the Iranian regime at a public event on its premises.

The registered charity, situated in the prosperous north-west London neighbourhood of Maida Vale, hosted what it called a “community bazaar” on December 14 last year.

The centre promoted the gathering as a “vibrant space for cultural interaction, the exchange of knowledge and experiences, and the strengthening of national and religious identity”.

However, a dossier of photographs obtained by The Telegraph has exposed that stallholders were offering phone cases bearing images of Hassan Nasrallah, the late Hezbollah leader killed by Israel in 2024, alongside key rings expressing devotion to Iran’s supreme leader.

The phone cases displayed silhouette photographs of Nasrallah, the former secretary-general of the terrorist organisation proscribed by the British government.

Stickers featuring what appeared to be silhouettes of other militant commanders were also available, including Qassem Soleimani, the IRGC Quds Force chief killed in an American air strike in January 2020.

Key rings on sale carried inscriptions declaring loyalty to Ali Khamenei, with one reading “With the kindness of God, Seyyed Ali is our leader”.

Another carried the phrase “Ba Velayet ta Shahadat”, an expression rooted in Shia Islamic and Iranian revolutionary ideology that signifies absolute allegiance to the supreme leader.

Portraits of Khamenei and his predecessor Ruhollah Khomeini adorned the walls prominently.

Lord Walney, a former government adviser on political violence, described the findings in stark terms: “This dossier suggests that the Islamic Centre of England’s bazaar was an Aladdin’s cave of extremist content.”

“Some of the material for sale may contravene terrorism laws, it is certainly deeply inappropriate for an organisation that remains a registered charity despite controversy after controversy,” he warned.

He added that failure to act would expose “a deep weakness in Britain’s oversight of charities which can too easily be exploited by extremists”.

Shadow Home Office minister Alicia Kearns MP demanded the centre’s closure, stating: “These latest revelations of terrorist tat being sold by the Islamic Centre of England are yet more evidence of why the centre must be closed and those responsible for propagating terrorist propaganda face the law.”

The centre has faced repeated controversy since January 2020, when it organised a candlelit vigil for Soleimani, describing him as a “dedicated soldier of Islam” and a “great martyr”.

That event, along with another gathering that eulogised the slain general, prompted an official warning from the charity watchdog.

In October 2022, the centre’s director Seyed Hashem Moosavi delivered a speech branding Iranian protesters “enemies” and “soldiers of Satan”, while accusing women who declined to wear hijabs of spreading “poison”.

The Charity Commission subsequently launched a full statutory inquiry the following month, which could ultimately result in the organisation losing its charitable status.

A spokesman for the centre stated: “The trustees take all concerns about the centre very seriously. We are currently reviewing matters pertaining to the Dec 14 event and, in light of this, are unable to comment further at this time.”

UK: Transgender TikToker Jailed for Raping a Woman ‘At Least 10 Times’

A British TikToker who claims to be a transgender woman has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for violent and sexual offenses, including “at least” ten instances of rape. Jordan O’Brien, 34, who also goes by Jennifer Nieve on social media, was found guilty at Manchester Crown Court last October of rape, assault by penetration, threatening with an offensive weapon, and other violent offenses.

During sentencing yesterday, Judge Tim Harrington said the rape conviction involved no fewer than 10 instances of violent sexual abuse, saying, “I have to sentence you for at least 10 occasions that you raped her. This was repeated offending.”

O’Brien was referred to as “Jennifer” throughout the sentencing hearing.

Last fall, a former friend of O’Brien’s shared images of court documents on social media after learning about the five-day trial and conviction. O’Brien had been charged with six counts of sexual abuse, including rape, assault by penetration, strangulation, coercive control, and threatening to assault the victim with a weapon. According to the court records, the offenses took place between June and December of 2022.

O’Brien is described as having exerted terrifying control over his victim, monitoring her cellular device, destroying her possessions, and being verbally abusive towards her. Among the more serious convictions, O’Brien was found to have raped his victim with a dildo, strangled her, and threatened her with a knife.

A victim statement read aloud in court on her behalf described the psychological impact of the abuse she had endured.

“I don’t sleep for very long, and I’m up at all hours of the night,” the statement read. “If I am in a group of more than five people I suffer from anxiety. The impact has been long term and deeply damaging. I have lived for years with fear and anxiety.”

O’Brien had amassed over 60,000 followers on social media for videos he made about identifying as transgender, and, judging by comments made on TikTok, had been receiving gifts and financial donations from his fans. One respondent stated that they had come to regret spending over £100 on O’Brien after learning about the charges against him.

After his conviction in October, multiple former associates of O’Brien came forward to express their outrage at the situation and reveal more details about O’Brien’s history.

O’Brien’s former roommate, a drag queen who uses the moniker Charli Angel, also took to TikTok to condemn O’Brien for his crimes. Angel, who attended the trial at Manchester Crown Court, said he had been misled about the serious nature of the charges against him, while referring to O’Brien with feminine pronouns.

In a follow-up video, Angel described how O’Brien appeared to lack remorse during sentencing.

@itscharliangel Jennifer the Monster Nieve aka Jordan O’Brien has been sentenced today at Manchester Crown Court. Justice has finally been served, please do not send any hate to the victim or their family. Please do not mention the victims name. #jennifernieve #jordanobrien #thejennifershow #manchester #fyp ♬ original sound – Charli Angel 👼 StreamSnipers

“I’ve just got back from Manchester Crown Court where Jennifer Nieve has been sentenced. She [sic] was found guilty of rape, sexual assault by penetration, coercive control, and threatening with a weapon – which was knives… She had a stern face, with no remorse on her face.”

He continued: “The judge said she will have a restraining order against her which will protect the victim and her child, and that will be indefinitely. Jennifer will also have to notify the police of where she lives for the rest of her life.”

Reporting on the sentencing this week, multiple British news outlets prompted criticism on social media for referring to O’Brien with feminine pronouns or burying his male sex in their reporting.

While it has not been publicly stated where O’Brien will be serving his sentence, it is believed he will be held in a men’s institution due to a 2023 policy change that put restrictions on allowing trans-identified males to be placed in the women’s estate.

The change was prompted by an eruption of public outrage over the case of Isla Bryson, a trans-identified male convicted of raping two women. Bryson’s initial placement in a female prison in Scotland ignited fierce international debate over whether self-identified gender should determine prison placement.

The backlash, fueled by concerns for female inmates’ safety, quickly became a flashpoint and prompted urgent reviews across the United Kingdom. In response, the UK Ministry of Justice for England and Wales tightened its rules, barring transgender women with male genitalia or convictions for violent or sexual offenses from the women’s prison estate except in what they claimed were “the most exceptional cases.”
