Italy begins removing non-biological parents from birth certificates

The northern Italian city of Padova has begun to remove the names of non-biological parents from birth certificates, prompted by a new law passed by Giorgia Meloni’s conservative administration.

According to official data, these birth certificates belong to 33 children of Italian lesbian women who were registered as parents in 2017 under the municipal government of Sergio Giordani. As of Thursday, 27 of these documents had been amended to remove the names of non-biological parents.

Giordani was elected mayor in 2017 on a promise to abolish the traditional “mother” and “father” designation on birth certificates, but this was overturned when Meloni’s government ordered local authorities to stop registering children of same-sex parents with both parents’ names.

This means that only the child’s biological parent can be named on birth certificates. Surrogacy is illegal in Italy, and even gay marriage has not been legalized.

The measure also prevents men in same-sex relationships from registering the birth of their children in the names of both fathers. Instead, they must choose one of them to be the legal father.

Back in March, Giordani had said that despite the government ordnance, his office would keep registering the same-sex parents of children.

Because of “climate crisis”: German Greens want to ban strawberry and tomato cultivation

Because summers are allegedly getting hotter and drier, Lower Saxony’s Green Minister for the Environment Christian Meyer is planning an explosive ban. The cultivation of water-intensive fruit varieties such as strawberries and tomatoes is to be restricted and possibly banned.

Ban on field irrigation and water extraction

Already, in some regions of Germany, trees and fields may no longer be irrigated during the day when it is warmer than 24 degrees Celsius. But that is apparently not enough for the Greens. Meyer also wants to enforce a ban on field irrigation and water extraction if too little groundwater is formed. The consequence would be that the cultivation of strawberries and tomatoes in particular would be made virtually impossible for farmers.

Import from abroad

The president of the German rural people, Holger Hennies, sharply criticised the announcement and pointed out that this would increase the pressure to import fruit varieties from abroad more frequently, which would not be climate-friendly at all.

Austrian conservatives oppose EU’s ‘scandalous’ planned expansion of Ukraine funding

Austrian People’s Party (FPÖ) politician Petra Steger. (Wikimedia Commons)

The European Union’s desire to increase budget contributions from member states to continue funding Ukraine’s drawn-out conflict with Russia is scandalous, the conservative Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ) has claimed.

Prominent FPÖ politicians sharply criticized the Austrian government for supporting the pro-war efforts in Brussels. Petra Steger, the party’s spokesperson on European affairs, insisted the European Union should not be fueling the conflict by providing an endless supply of military and financial support to Ukraine, and should instead be promoting peace talks in the region.

Steger slammed the plans proposed by the EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell for the European Union to provide, in addition to existing measures, up to €5 billion per year for Ukraine’s defense needs and to guarantee a substantial contribution to the military training program of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

She said the plan represents a “bottomless pit,” and her party therefore reiterated its calls for the Austrian federal government to suspend its additional contributions to the European Union budget.

“The scandalous increase in the EU budget hasn’t even been implemented yet, and here they come with their next crazy demand. In the meantime, more than enough billions have been transferred to Ukraine, which has brought nothing but bloodshed and a boom for the U.S. arms industry,” Steger said.

“All this at a time when the European Union is constantly giving billions in gifts to third countries, openly supporting a warring party while the EU itself is degenerating into a debt union. Moreover, the European Central Bank is constantly overstepping its mandate. The hard-earned money of the Austrians is no longer in good hands in the institutions of the European Union,” she added.

Instead, Brussels should be hell-bent on promoting a ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow to help bring peace back to the region.

“Until then, the EU’s behavior can only be described as a brazen Brussels rip-off that has turned into the ultimate disaster for the European financial budget,” she claimed.

More than €60 billion has flowed into Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and the European Union wants to approve even more funding through the European Peace Facility. This, however, comes at an additional cost for member states, and net contributors to the EU budget, like Austria, aren’t impressed.

“Our hard-earned prosperity over decades is incessantly sent to Ukraine by the EU,” Steger said, adding that the federal government supported Brussels in its plans and gave the European Commission its nod.

Her party colleague Axel Kassegger also criticized the European Union and the Austrian government for not being firmly opposed to the deployment of cluster bombs in Ukraine by the United States.

A Leading Climate Scientist Expresses Doubt About the Veracity of the Global Warming Movement

By Jerome R. Corsi

A new book by a leading climate change scientist gives reason for hope that the light of truth is shedding a few rays into the dark, dystopian, ideologically driven pseudoscience known as global warming.

With the 2023 publication of Climate Uncertainty and Risk: Rethinking Our Response, geoscientist Judith A. Curry, Ph.D., acknowledges that, in 2007, she “joined the consensus” in supporting the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report as “authoritative.” What changed her perspective was Climategate, the 2009 hacking and unauthorized release of emails from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia. The email exchanges between climate scientists and IPCC authors confirmed her “concerns and suspicions” that “politics and personal agendas” had encroached on the IPCC assessment process.

In 2017, Curry resigned from a prestigious faculty position as chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology. “As a result of the polarization of climate science, I found that I had lost my love of science in the context of the academic ecosystem,” she admits.

Curry is currently employed in the private sector as president of Climate Forecast Applications Network (CFAN), a company she co-founded in 2006 under Georgia Tech’s VentureLab program. There she is involved in “real-world decision-making to manage weather- and climate-related risks.” She also created the highly respected blog Climate Etc., for which she has written numerous posts

Image: Judith Curry (edited). YouTube screen grab.

In her new book, Curry acknowledges that a changing climate “has been the norm throughout the Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history.” She refuses to abandon the idea that we humans “are also changing atmospheric composition by increasing the emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases,” but she adds an important caveat:

This redefinition of “climate change” to refer only to human-caused changes to the atmospheric composition has effectively eliminated natural climate change from the public discussion.

The result is that the common parlance refers to “climate change,” with no mention of natural climate variability. Any change that is observed over the past century is now implicitly assumed to be caused by human emissions to the atmosphere. This assumption leads to connecting every unusual weather or climate event to human-caused climate change from fossil fuel emissions. Having acknowledged that climate change is the “norm” throughout the Earth’s 4.6-billion-year history, Curry understands that this politicized attribution of all climate change to humans burning hydrocarbon fuels is nonsense.

The crux of Curry’s argument is mathematical, and her main goal is to redefine how computer-driven climate models are conceptualized. What Curry understands is what MIT mathematician and meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz proved with what has become known as the “butterfly effect.” Lorenz demonstrated that the mathematics of climate involve nonlinear differential equations in which a change in an independent variable does not produce a deterministic outcome in related dependent variables.

In his book The Essence of Chaos, Lorenz also demonstrated that small differences in initial measurements can produce dramatic differences in climate model outcomes. So, a butterfly flapping wings in China might affect tornados developing in Kansas, but sometimes when a butterfly flaps its wings in China, there is no effect on tornados in Kansas.  The flapping of wings is a small difference in an initial measurement that can cause a huge effect on climate outcomes.  But the fact that the wings flapping in China does not always cause a tornado in Kansas is because the equations ruling climate are nonlinear, so sometimes the butterfly causes a tornado, and sometimes it does not.

In other words, weather is not predictable, nor can we determine with precision the precise amount of global warming, if any, that will result from a given increase in atmospheric CO2.  This is why Curry abandoned the hope that climate can be modeled deterministically by a computer and, instead, insists that the uncertainties inherent in climate mean that, at best, our weather and climate predictions are uncertain, measurable only by probability theory.

Curry, like Lorenz, concluded that the nonlinear nature of climate equations and the inherent limitations of making quantitative measurements of climate variables (in a mathematics that involves irrational numbers with endless decimal places) doom all climate models to failure. She writes, “Many processes in atmosphere and oceans are nonlinear, which means there is no simple relation between cause and effect.” She concludes “the inherent unpredictably of the climate system” dooms all computer weather models to failure in a deterministic sense, noting that “for weather, this predictability timescale is a matter of weeks.”

While Curry is careful not to antagonize the global warming hysterics that dominate the intellectual world today, what she has just said is that IPCC models dictating we must limit global temperatures to no more than 1.5°C above preindustrial levels within the next thirty years to prevent catastrophic global warming reflect political bias, rather than conclusions drawn from legitimate climate science.

Curry favors changing the climate paradigm from deterministic thinking producing apocalyptic scenarios of dystopian climate futures to a probabilistic model that acknowledges the uncertainties of outcomes inherent to Earth’s climate. Instead of discarding computer-driven climate models, she wants to abandon using them as “prediction machines” in favor of using them as “scenario generators.”

The bottom line of Curry’s concern is that our understanding of Earth’s climate is limited, such that even possible climate outcome scenarios generated by elaborate climate models can, at best, be determined to be possibilities, not certainties. That we must rely on climate probabilities is another huge admission, given the cataclysmic nature of Earth’s changes in geologic time—the rise of mountains, the movement of continents, and the impact of asteroids, to name a few. Earth experienced five massive extinctions of nearly everything living before homo sapiens appeared.

That a geoscientist of Judith Curry’s magnitude should be willing to criticize the IPCC global warming establishment on the mathematics of their climate models is earth-shaking. Without their climate models, the IPCC lose their thunder. predicting climate catastrophes. Once Curry embraced Lorenz, she abandoned Michael Mann forever. The dirty secret of Curry’s important book is that it exposes the IPCC attack on CO2 as just another politicized iteration of the familiar neo-Marxist animosity to hydrocarbon fuels for providing the abundant and affordable energy capitalism needs to maintain the modern industrial state.

The French Disconnection: Who – and what – was the rioting really driven by?

Imagine the U.S. canceling the Fourth of July holiday due to high crime in our cities and you get a sense of what has occurred in France. Cities across France canceled Bastille Day observances July 14 because of rioting that ignited when a police officer shot and killed 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk, a French citizen of Algerian and Moroccan descent, during a traffic stop in Paris on June 27.

News reports said churches were burned to the ground and graffiti was scrawled in red paint on a church in Marseilles declaring: “Mohammed was the last prophet”. Bank branches were ransacked and ATMs opened with chainsaws. Some shouted “death to the police,” “death to France,” “death to the Jews,” and “Hitler was right.” A Holocaust memorial was defaced. Thousands have been arrested.

Chief Petty Officer Michael McNabb, CC-PD-Mark

Kosher food restaurants and shops have been looted and burned during the rampage.

Ayat Oraby, a former Egyptian TV and Muslim Brotherhood affiliate, has contributed her dose of venom to the French riots: “To where is France heading? To hell, God willing!”

Is France now paying a heavy price for admitting so many radical Islamists into the country? As Sorbonne University Professor Bernard Rougier has written: “Since the 1970s, France has welcomed an ever-increasing number of immigrants from the Muslim world. … Only a tiny minority have assimilated into French society. The others live as they lived in their countries of origin.”

Guy Milliere, on his webpage for the Gatestone Institute International Policy Council, recently posted these various quotes on the subject: “Radical imams came from the Muslim world and allege that France is guilty of having colonized their countries, that Muslims should continue to live according to the law of Islam and that, in the imams’ view, France should pay for its crimes. Many politicians have told the newcomers that France is racist and had exploited them.”

Milliere also posted this one: “Criminal gangs formed and began ruling these neighborhoods … French political leaders closed their eyes. Meanwhile, these Muslim neighborhoods have grown and crime from them increased.”

Some politicians have tried to appease the radicals by sending more money to Muslim neighborhoods following riots by mostly young people who believe they have no future. To no avail. Rioting has now spread to Muslim areas in Belgium and Switzerland.

Again, none of this should come as a surprise. As the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi predicted: “We have 50 million Muslims in Europe. There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe — without swords, without guns, without conquest — will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades.”

In 2018, a House of Representatives subcommittee held hearings on the influential Muslim Brotherhood and what it called its “global threat.” Then-Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said: “The Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide, Mohammed Badie, has said that the organization’s goal is to establish a new Islamist caliphate, including the imposition of sharia law, which is the totalitarian Islamic legal code. We saw what happens when the Brotherhood takes control of a country in Egypt from 2012 to 2013, and the results were chilling, that then-President Mohamed Morsi defied the rule of law and granted himself near absolute power. As Egyptian leader Mohamed El Baradi put it, Morsi usurped all state powers and appointed himself Egypt’s new pharaoh.”

While it is obligatory to say not all Muslims are terrorists, nor do all share the goal of the Muslim Brotherhood, the rioting in France, Belgium and Switzerland shows the influence of the growing radical wing of Islam. It should be a warning because the extremists’ have announced their ultimate targets are Israel and the U.S.

Spanish elections: with almost all votes counted, a hung parliament looms in Spain

Spaniards voted in a potentially close-run general election on Sunday that could see Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s governing Socialists lose power and return power to the center-right People’s Party.

Sánchez called the election early after the left took a drubbing in local elections in May, but his gamble to wrong-foot his opponents could backfire.

Opinion polls showed the election was likely to produce a win for Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s center-right People’s Party, but to form a government, it may need to partner with Santiago Abascal’s Vox.

Voting closed at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT) when voter surveys conducted via phone calls over the past week will be released. All ballots are expected to be counted by midnight, confirming the party with the most votes.

Both the left and right blocs have the potential to form coalitions, which will need at least 176 seats in the 350-seat lower house of Congress. A new parliament must be constituted by August 17, but negotiations between parties to form a government can go on for months.

An analysis of opinion poll data by Spain’s El País newspaper on July 19, when polling ended, projected a 55% chance of a PP/Vox coalition, a 15% chance of Sánchez staying in power with a patchwork leftist coalition, and a 23% chance of a hung parliament and a repeat election.

As Sánchez went to vote in Madrid, he was greeted by one small group of people shouting “liar” and a similar-sized group shouting “prime minister”. He told reporters he had “good feelings” about the election outcome.

The prime minister’s minority government is currently in coalition with the far-left Unidos Podemos, which is running in Sunday’s election under the Sumar platform.

As of the writing of this article (GMT 2045), with 88.8%, the right-wing Vox party was poised to take the third place in Sunday’s vote, and it will likely become a coalition partner of the People’s Party.

Despite the significant loss of support and therefore number of seats (about 20 depending, on the final results; Vox won 52 seats in the previous election), Vox will play a crucial role in the formation of a lasting coalition with the PP. Both parties can count on majority support in the Congress of Deputies.

As the largest party’s leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo can now be expected to be requested by King Felipe VI to become the Prime Minister and attempt to form a government. His cabinet will need to secure a vote of confidence in the Congress of Deputies to start its work.

In the initial comments, Spanish political analysts point to the deepening polarization and the phenomenon of bipartisanship in Spain.

According to the exit poll, the separatist parties from Catalonia, the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), and Together for Catalonia (Junts) will also enter the Congress with nine deputies each. Additionally, the Basque separatist parties EH Bildu and the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) secured six and five seats, respectively.

Rhodes horror fires ’caused by human hands’ as island blaze sees 16,000 evacuated

A police investigation has been launched into the horrific wildfires in Rhodes, Greece, with officials already suspecting that sick arsonists are the ones to blame.

The Rhodes fire is one of many to hit the country as it battles a scorching 40C heatwave, leaving hundreds of Brits stranded.

Since the blaze started six days ago, local firefighters have struggled to control it and winds are blasting it towards popular resorts.

Thousands of people have been evacuated by boat, with UK travel companies Jet2 and TUI cancelling all flights into the country earlier today until July 30.

And now it is being claimed by top officials in the area that the fires were actually man made.

Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, a representative from the Rhodes Fire Department told local news outlets: “Fires are set by human hands.

“Whether it is due to negligence or fraud will be seen (but) people have been summoned for statements and others will be summoned.

“As soon as we have complete information – because the investigation is in full swing, we will make announcements.”

No arrests have been made thus far but a preliminary investigation has been carried out with “indications” pointing to it being arson.

Local police said that 16,000 people were evacuated by land and 3,000 by sea from 12 villages and several hotels.

Six people were briefly hospitalized with respiratory problems and were later released, and a person who fell and broke their leg during a hotel evacuation and a pregnant woman remain hospitalized.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection said it was “the largest evacuation from a wildfire in the country.”

As of yesterday, around around 266 emergency service personnel were tackling the blaze, with the army also being brought in to help.

Alternative for Germany Party Surges in Polls as Support for Populism Rises

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has surged to its highest level of support as populist policies continue to gain traction in the country and support for the neo-liberal establishment wanes.

According to a survey this week from Institute for New Social Answers (INSA), the AfD has jumped by two points to 22 per cent nationally. The head of the polling organisation, Hermann Binkert said that “this is the highest value that we have ever measured for this party.”

The result, reported by Welt, means that the populist party has increased its lead over Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD), which currently sits at 18 per cent, as well as the government coalition partner Greens, who only have 14 per cent support.

Although the “union” of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) is still considered the largest party in the country at 26 per cent, this only applies when both are taken collectively, otherwise, the AfD would be the single largest party.

It is also noteworthy that the struggles for Chancellor Scholz’s traffic light coalition government have not benefited the centre right Union as much as the AfD. This is likely in large part due to the CDU continuing to take blame for the country’s energy and migration woes given that both crises were ushered in under the leadership of former CDU Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The rise of the AfD, which shocked the establishment with a surprise victory in a local election last month, has sparked panic among the political elites in Berlin, with government-funded organisation even going so far as to suggest banning the party outright to somehow protect democracy.

The good result from the AfD in the latest round of polling comes as another survey earlier this month showed a growing support for anti-mass migration and anti-woke populist policies are gaining ground in the country.

According to a poll conducted by INSA found that should former leader of The Left party in the Bundestag, Sahra Wagenknecht form her own populist party to run in next year’s state elections in Thuringia, her part would secure 25 per cent of the vote. Combined with the AfD, a potential partnership for the theoretical Wagenknecht party would secure 47 per cent support.

Wagenknecht, who remains one of the more popular leftist figures in the country, has effectively been sidelined and ostracised by her party for espousing opinions against the woke agenda and mass migration, which she has argued disproportionately impacts the working classes.

Even though a new Wagenknecht populist party would likely take votes from the AfD, party leaders, including Thuringia co-leader Stefan Möller, have seemingly welcomed the idea of a left-right populist alliance.

“When I look at Wagenknecht’s positions, a partnership with her seems the most likely,” Möller said.

Mesut Özil presents his tattoo depicting the symbol of the Islamist and anti-Semitic Grey Wolves

Mesut Ozil (34), it is not known with what intention or if it was voluntary, he took a photo with his personal trainer, Alper Aksaç, who is making people talk. With the supposed intention of showing the world his impeccable form, the former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder shows off abs in the gym.

However, in the image, posted by Aksaç on Instagram, a small gray wolf tattooed on the chest of the former German international can be clearly seen. That wolf is the political symbol of an organization of the Turkish extreme right. The three crescents along with a howling wolf are the symbol of the far-right Turkish ‘Grey Wolves’.

The flag with the three crescents (‘Üç Hilal’) served as a war banner in the Ottoman Empire and today is the logo of the Turkish far-right party MHP (‘Nationalist Movement Party’). The ideology ranges from right-wing extremism to nationalist racism and from antisemitism to Islamism.

Mesut Özil, who has 26.9 million followers on Instagram, is Erdogan’s most popular supporter and the MHP is a close ally of the Turkish president.

Iranian government official calls for boycott of all products from Sweden and Denmark over Quran burnings

Iranian leader called for boycott of Swedish and Danish products over Quran Burning incidents (Image: Middle East Eye)

On 22nd July, a senior Iran government official called for a boycott of all the products originating from Sweden and Denmark over Quran burning incidents in those countries. In a statement, the secretary of a top advisory economic body for the Iranian government, Mohsen Rezaei, said Muslim countries should boycott products either manufactured or sold by Denmark and Sweden as these two Nordic countries have allowed the desecration of the Quran.

Iran’s leader called for boycott of products from Sweden and Denmark. Source: Twitter

Rezaei said that the boycott should be included in the coordinated measures that Islamic governments are adopting to condemn the acts of desecration of the Quran in Sweden and Denmark. He said, “What is happening in some European countries, including in Sweden and Denmark, against Islamic sanctities and the Quran is barbarism rather than freedom.”

He added, “To prevent a repetition of such heinous and inhumane acts, the Muslim countries have a duty to boycott their commodities, expel their ambassadors and follow up on the prosecution of the abusive people and their backers.”

The Islamic countries expressed their anger earlier this week after a second incident of the Quran burning happened in Sweden this year with consent from police authorities and the administration. On 21st July, another case of Quran burning was reported from Denmark, where a man set a copy of the Quran on fire near the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen.

In an attempt to express their anger over the incident, Iran has announced it would not accept a new Swedish ambassador and will avoid sending any new envoy.

The protests against the Quran burning are spreading across Islamic countries. In the wee hours of 22nd July, hundreds of people in Baghdad tried to storm into the city’s Green Zone, which is a heavily fortified area as there are several foreign embassies and the seat of Iraq’s government. The protesters raised slogans like ‘Yes, yes to the Quran!’.

Danish humanitarian organisation’s headquarter attacked

As per local media, in a separate incident, headquarters of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) located in the Basra governorate of Iraq was set ablaze by the protesters. The organisation’s executive director for the Middle East, Lilu Thapa, said, “Our staff on the premises at the time were physically unharmed, but there has been damage to the property with structures set on fire.” DRC has been active in the country for over 20 years.

Iraqi Presidency warns people not in indulge in ‘acts of sedition’

Meanwhile, the Iraqi Presidency has urged international organisations and Western governments to stop incitement and hate practices, “whatever their pretexts”. The official statement also warned the Iraqi citizens not to act in a way that might be described as a ‘plot of sedition’ aimed to show Iraq is unsafe for foreign missions.

Danish Foreign Minister says Quran burning not a crime but ‘foolish’

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen called Quran burning a foolish act while noting it is not a crime in the country. He said, “It is a disgraceful act to insult the religion of others”. He added, “This applies to the burning of Korans [Qurans] and other religious symbols. It has no other purpose than to provoke and create division.” In an official statement, Denmark’s Foreign Ministry said, “It is a provocative act that hurts many people and creates division between different religions and cultures. Denmark has freedom of religion and many Danish citizens are Muslims. They are a valued part of the Danish population. Denmark underlines that freedom of expression and freedom of assembly must be respected. Denmark supports the right to protest but emphasises it must remain peaceful.”
