UK: Failed asylum seeker murdered pensioner who took him in

A failed Iranian asylum seeker will be sentenced on Wednesday after brutally murdering a frail 87-year-old woman who took him into her home in the English county of North Yorkshire.

Pensioner Brenda Blainey was found dead in her home in the village of Thornton-le-Dale on Jan. 5 last year.

On Monday, Leeds Crown Court heard how Iranian national Shahin Darvish-Narenjbon, who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, strangled her before smashing her head on the kitchen floor of her home, stabbing her in the chest, and slitting her throat.

Nicholas Lumley, prosecuting, told the court how the frail victim had taken in her killer 9 years prior, back in 2013 when they first met at a restaurant in Leeds. She offered him a room in her home and described their relationship as one of “grandma-grandson.”

“She provided him with food and other home comforts as he was studying in Leeds,” said Lumley, who added the victim had also attended Darvish-Narenjbon’s graduation and had provided him with a car.

The court heard how on Jan. 5, Mrs. Blainey had called the local village shop to place an order when the line went dead. The shopkeeper attempted to return Mrs. Blainey’s call several times to no avail, and when the shopkeeper’s husband went round to check on her, he was met by a police cordon.

Darvish-Narenjbon himself had called the police, telling authorities he had come downstairs to find his surrogate grandmother in a pool of blood.

“I just came downstairs and found my grandmother on the hard floor. She’s got blood everywhere and I don’t know,” the Iranian national told a police call handler.

The court later heard from a forensic psychiatrist who had made a report after spending time with Darvish-Narenjbon. The failed asylum seeker had spoken of delusions, and it was clear his mental health had significantly deteriorated.

The court heard that Darvish-Narenjbon saw a red button on the TV, which he subsequently pressed and received a “license” to harm and kill Brenda Blainey.

Darvish-Narenjbon was initially charged with murder, which he denied; he later admitted to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, which was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The killer appeared in court via video link from the high-security Ramptom Hospital where he has been held since May last year.

Prosecuting counsel told the court that Tehran-born Darvish-Narenjbon has resided in the U.K. since he was 15. He had also lived briefly in the United States where he spent time inside a psychiatric unit.

The defendant’s permission to remain in the U.K. expired back in 2015. He subsequently applied for asylum, which was turned down, as was his appeal against the Home Office decision.

German voters alarmed by tank deliveries to warring nation

The delivery of Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine, which has now been decided by the Scholz administration, is extremely controversial. According to current surveys, the majority of Germans think the decision is wrong.

The resentment is particularly great in Central Germany. According to an MDR online survey, around three quarters of the population there have rejected it. More than 28 000 people took part in the survey. According to the broadcaster, thousands of comments have reached them and “give a deep insight into the mood of the people behind the numbers”.

The MDR pointed out that the results of the survey were “not representative according to strictly demoscopic standards”, but it was a “weighted survey” that realistically reflected the mood. According to the broadcaster, 28 198 people from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia took part in the survey which was launched on Monday evening.

Overall, around three quarters of the participants considered the federal government’s tank decision to be dead wrong. The vast majority of them – 80 percent – fear that Germany will become a war party, according to the MDR.

The concern of many is that the battle tank deliveries could contribute to prolonging the war. Almost two-thirds shared this view. On the other hand, only 13 percent believed that the war would be over more quickly as a result. Only 16 percent assumed that the delivery of the Leopard 2 tanks would have no impact on the further course of the war. Around a third of those questioned even demanded that Germany stay out of the war completely and not support Ukraine. They said that good relations with Russia were more important.

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a knife attack on Monday at the Schuman metro station in Brussels, just a few hundred metres from the seats of the European Commission and the European Council. Police did not comment on the motives of the attacker.

Three people were injured in a knife attack late Monday afternoon in a Brussels metro station. According to the federal police, one of the injured is “in a critical condition”.

“Knife attack in Schuman station: the cooperation with the different police services (…) has enabled the rapid arrest of the perpetrator,” tweeted Brussels Mayor Philippe Close. The police did not comment on the motives of the attacker. The federal prosecutor’s office said it had not been involved “at this stage”. According to a source familiar with the case, the person arrested was “already known for a previous conviction”

The attack happened at around 6pm at the Schuman metro station, which is just a few hundred metres from the seats of the European Commission and the European Council. As reported by an AFP journalist present at the scene, several plainclothes police officers ran to a platform of the station at that time. At the same time, a woman asked passengers entering the station to turn back. Le Progrès

Ireland to go ahead with wine health warnings – sources

Ireland is to go ahead with health warnings on wine bottles similar to those on cigarette packets, Irish diplomatic sources told ANSA Monday.
Italy has said it will make common cause with France and Spain in trying to block the labels, which warn of links to cancer and harm for the liver due to excessive consumption.
After the tacit approval of the European Commission, Dublin is set to move ahead with the warnings on beer, wine and spirits despite the opposition of Italy and the other major wine producers, the sources said.
“We do not yet have precise dates, but the government is working on it and we will go ahead,” they said.
They noted that Irish legislation on the issue dates back to 2018.

Rapists Who Say they are ‘Trans’ Should be Taken at ‘Face Value’, British Govt Minister Says

screen grab youtube

Male rapists and criminals who describe themselves as being “transgender” women, Scotland’s justice secretary has declared.

Keith Brown, the Scottish National Party party who serves as the country’s justice secretary within the devolved government — roughly analogous to a state government in the U.S. — has said that male criminals and rapists who say that they are “transgender” women should simply be believed.

It comes shortly after leftist authorities in the country paused the movement of so-called “transgender” criminals who are biologically male from being moved into women’s prisons after the case of convicted transgender rapist Isla Bryson — formerly Adam Graham — drew the attention of the general public.

However, while speaking to UK state-owned broadcaster the BBC, Brown said that so-called  “transgender” criminals and rapists should not be doubted as to whether they actually identify as women, and are not just gaming the system.

In particular, when asked by a journalist from the outlet whether or not Bryson and other “transgender” rapists were “gaming the system”, with many not identifying as women until after being charged or convicted or raped, the minister rejected this.

“If somebody presents as a trans person, then we accept that at face value,” Brown replied. “What we do not accept is that that gives them the right to go to the prison estate of their choosing.”

He went on to say that the government would be willing to consider a specific facility be created for transgender individuals should it be recommended to the government.

Although the devolved government has paused its push to house some transgender prisoners in women’s prisons when they have a history of violence against women, this is unlikely to be the last we hear on the issue from Scotland.

Headed up by hardline leftist First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the devolved region has repeatedly pushed militantly pro-transgenderism measures, even when such measures allegedly put biological women at risk.

This has resulted in the government coming into conflict with authorities in Westminster who — while also being extremely friendly towards the demands of transgenderism themselves — have taken issue with the impact such Scottish laws could have on the rest of the UK.

London officials have even gone so far as to block legislation passed by the Scottish government from coming into force over the disagreement, with one law aiming to allow any individual aimed 16 or over to legally change their gender without medical intervention being prevented from receiving the necessary royal ascent due to fears it could cause issues for equality legislation in the rest of Britain.

Bangladesh: Hindu teacher suspended after being accused of blasphemy by Muslim students. Here is what we know so far

Mob storm into school premises, image via BDNews24

A Hindu school teacher by the name of Newton Sarkar was suspended after being accused of insulting Islam by his Muslim students in Abhaynagar in Jessore district in the Khulna Division of Bangladesh. As per a report by BDNews24, Sarkar is a resident of Bahadurpur village of Jessore.

He worked as a biology teacher at the Deyapara Model Secondary School. On January 25 this year, he was accused of making ‘offensive remarks’ against Islam and Prophet Muhammad while teaching science to 8th-standard students.

The Muslim students in his class lodged a complaint with the school principal, accusing the Hindu teacher of committing blasphemy. The Principal told the agitated students to go home and that he would take necessary action in this regard.

Given that the school was closed between January 26-28 on the occasion of Saraswati Puja, the hullabaloo over the matter had taken a back seat. But on Sunday (January 29), a large mob of ‘angry’ students, parents and Islamic clerics stormed into the school.

The administration gave in to their demands and temporarily suspended the Hindu teacher in a bid to pacify the situation. The development was confirmed by the Abhaynagar upazila secondary education officer, Shahidul Islam.

Meanwhile, a 3-member committee has been formed by the school administration to look into the matter and submit a report on it in 3 working days. While speaking about the matter, Newton Sarkar dismissed the allegations levelled at him by his Muslim students.

“I only talked about science in class. I even told students to honour all deities with respect. They quoted me out of context. I cannot understand why did they do it to me,” he told BDNews24.

Muslim mob destroys houses of Hindus over blasphemy allegations

On January 15 evening, a mob of Islamists vandalised the residence of a Hindu family in Uttar Kandi village in Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj district in Dhaka Division of Bangladesh.

As per reports, the violent mob accused a Hindu youth of committing blasphemy and ‘hurting’ the religious sentiments of the local Muslims over a Facebook post.

Soon after Islamists descended on the residence of his extended family and destroyed the property. According to Dhaka Tribune, no casualties were reported after the targeted attack.

As per a report by The Daily Star, a total of 8 shops and 4 houses belonging to the Hindu community were attacked. In a bid to pacify the situation, a large contingent of police has been deployed in the Uttar Kandi village.

The Hindu boy, now accused of blasphemy by radical Islamists, has reportedly been living in India for the past 7 years. Moreover, his other family members including his mother and sister had also moved to India about 3 months ago.

Immigration hits new records in Macron’s France and that may be by design

The year 2022 was a historic year for immigration in France. Never before had that country seen such an influx of both legal and illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, the proportion of those deported after having been denied asylum remains absurdly low.

“A record year for the flood of immigrants into France: 320,330 residence permits were issued in 2022, the equivalent of the population of the city of Nantes. And that’s without taking illegal immigration into account. It is urgent to regain control of our borders!” Marine Le Pen tweeted on Thursday.

On Jan. 26, the center-right daily Le Figaro commented on the figures published by the interior ministry with the title “Increasingly strong migratory pressure puts France against the wall.” It also ran its daily editorial on the government’s “guilty negligence” concerning immigration.

“While some reforms, such as the pension reform, are difficult to carry out because they meet with strong opposition from the public,” Le Figaro’s deputy editor-in-chief Yves Thréard wrote, “others would seem much simpler, as they are very much expected. This is true of immigration in France. Legal or not, it broke records again last year, even without taking into account the forced exodus of Ukrainians. For decades, the subject has never ceased to worry us. But things have not changed, it is all getting worse: Makeshift camps appear everywhere, tensions in certain neighborhoods and territories are rising dangerously, and the links with the increase in crime are obvious.”

Last year, France — a country of 68 million inhabitants — handed out over 320,000 first-time residence permits to foreigners, which represents a 17 percent increase over the previous year. Even in 2019, the last year before the Covid pandemic, the number of first-time residence permits was “just” over 277,000. By way of comparison, the number of such permits was a little more than 170,000 in 2007, when France’s last center-right president, Nicolas Sarkozy, was elected, and it oscillated in the 193,000-197,000 range throughout his five-year tenure.

However, after François Hollande from the overtly pro-immigration Socialist Party was elected in 2012, the numbers started rising fast to reach over 247,000 in the last year of his presidency, 2017. His former special counselor for European affairs, then economy minister, who replaced him in the Élysée Palace, Emmanuel Macron, has since then kept increasing legal immigration — except for the first “Covid year” of 2020 — to reach 320,330 initial residence permits in 2022.

Macron’s planned draft law dubbed “Asylum and Immigration” should further accelerate this evolution, with measures to legalize the stay of illegal immigrants working in the black economy in industries lacking workers, such as restaurants.

Of those more 320,330 first-time residence permits, 108,340 were delivered to students, 90,385 as part of a family regrouping, 52,570 for economic immigrants, 40,490 on humanitarian grounds, and 28,545 for other reasons.

Additionally, 255,118 short-term visas were delivered for work.

In the meantime, the number of asylum seekers — most of them economic illegal immigrants filing for asylum to avoid deportation — exceeded the 150,000 mark for the first time last year, reaching 168,699 asylum requests. This number included 137,046 by first-time asylum seekers, 19,057 asylum requests filed as part of an appeal procedure after a first request had been rejected, and 12,596 requests eventually filed in France in the framework of the EU’s Dublin agreement. According to this agreement, asylum requests should be filed in the EU member state of first arrival.

The percentage of asylum requests leading to a positive outcome is also on the rise in France, reaching a historic level of 41.3 percent, which can only encourage would-be illegal migrants to try their luck and risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean.

The total number of valid residence permits held by foreigners in France also reached a new all-time record last year, with over 3.8 million such permits currently in force just for continental France. The figure has almost doubled in 15 years, according to Le Figaro.

The only immigration figure that remains stubbornly low is the number of deportations: Only 11,410 illegal immigrants were expelled in 2022. Incumbent Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin may have a big mouth when trying to sound tough on immigration, but he is very weak in terms of deeds or just lacks the will to get immigration back under control. As noted by Le Figaro, even adding the 2,098 assisted departures (in exchange for money) and the 1,888 “spontaneous departures,” the total is 15,396 departures. So, even in an area where successive French governments, including the current one, have been promising for years that things were going to change for the better, Darmanin is actually doing worse than all his predecessors under President Macron: Cazeneuve (16,489 assisted or forced departures in 2016), Collomb (19,957 in 2018), and Castaner (23,746 in 2019).

This is happening in the context of increased immigration at the European level, with 953,796 asylum requests in the EU plus Switzerland and Norway in 2022. The number in Germany is up 24 percent over the previous year, with 226,467 asylum requests.

At the European level, the main applicants for refugee status or so-called subsidiary protection were Syrians, Afghans, Venezuelans, Turks, and Colombians. In France, Afghanistan remained, for the fifth consecutive year, the first country of origin of asylum seekers with more than 17,000 first applications submitted, followed by Bangladesh (8,600), Turkey (8,500), Georgia (8,100), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (5,900).

Only in 2015 and 2016 had the number of asylum seekers been higher, with 1,216,860 and 1,166,815 first-time asylum applications, respectively. Since then, the total number remained close to half a million each year, with 535,045 first-time asylum applications in 2021.

Taking into account all 27 EU countries, the first country of origin of applicants in 2022 was Syria, followed by Afghanistan, Turkey, Venezuela, and Colombia. All the asylum figures and legal immigration figures given above do not include the 5 million or so refugees from Ukraine who sought “temporary protection” in the EU in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of their country.

With legal and illegal immigration getting worse over the years in spite of rising hostility towards open border measures, the government’s policy on immigration looks more like intended social engineering than just bad management.

The case for encouraging mass immigration — both legal and illegal — was made in front of the British House of Lords Migration Advisory Committee in 2012 by Irishman Peter Sutherland, the then-UN special representative for international migration and chairman of Goldman Sachs, who had earlier been a European commissioner for competition and director-general of the World Trade Organization.

According to Sutherland, migration was not only a “crucial dynamic for economic growth” for EU nations, “however difficult it may be to explain this to the citizens of those states,” but also the only sensible answer to an aging and declining native population. He added, with “hesitation” due to the unpopularity of the idea, that it was crucial “for the development of multicultural states.”

Another of Sutherland’s points in favor of mass immigration was that from a European integration perspective, the EU “should do its best to undermine” the “homogeneity” of its member states. “States have to become more open states, in terms of the people who inhabit them, just as the United Kingdom has demonstrated,” Sutherland argued, saying that there was a “shift from states selecting migrants to migrants selecting states,” and that mass immigration was key to the EU’s ability to compete at a global level.

These arguments could very well be the motives driving someone like France’s President Emmanuel Macron, a convinced market-minded Euro-federalist who once famously said that there is no such thing as “French culture” but that there are “cultures in France.”

In February 2017, the EU commissioner in charge of immigration, Dimitris Avramopoulos, said at an event at the University of Geneva that the EU-27 would need 6 million more immigrants in the coming years and that the EU would open immigration offices in all countries on the southern coast of the Mediterranean and in Western Africa as a way to fight illegal immigration.

However, much higher figures have also been promoted in the past. In fact, the United Nations, along with a number of think tanks, promoted the idea of 60 million migrants coming to the EU by 2050, with most of them arriving from Africa.

In June 2018 Federica Mogherini, a former communist who was then vice-president of the European Commission and a high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy, defended the case for continued mass immigration into Europe in front of African leaders gathered at an EU-G5 Sahel summit in Brussels. She told them that “some economic sectors in Europe, without immigration, would just have to stop working from one day to the other.”

And as for French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, he has proven to be much tougher on French nationals staging peaceful protests against the French government’s open border policy than on immigration itself.

Islamist terror organisation Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claims responsibility for the attack on Peshawar mosque

The bomber crossed at least two check points to reach the mosque (Image: Geo)

On January 30 (local time), a blast took place inside the Peshawar Police Lines mosque resulting in the death of at least 28 people. Around 150 were reportedly injured in the blast. Shortly after the attack, the Islamist terror outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the bombing.

On Twitter, Sarbakaf Mohmand, a leader of the radical Islamist organisation took responsibility for the attack.

According to sources, Sarbakaf Mohmand is the brother of deceased TTP commander Umar Khalid Khurasani. He tweeted that the suicide attack was part of a revenge attack for his brother, who was killed in Afghanistan in August 2022.

The terrorist organization’s spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

Suicide bomber blows himself up inside Peshawar Police Lines mosque in Pakistan

OpIndia had reported earlier in the day, that a suicide bomber was present in the front row during the prayers. He detonated the device and as a result, the roof of the mosque collapsed. An eyewitness had said that it was a powerful blast and smoke was everywhere after the blast. The eyewitness lost consciousness due to the blast and when he gained back consciousness, he saw that the roof had collapsed.

Following the blast, Islamabad is on high alert. The entry and exit points of the capital city have been secured and security agencies are continuously monitoring the situation.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan declares parallel government with new cabinet

It may be recalled that last year in December, the Islamist terror outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) challenged the sovereignty of the Pakistani State and declared the formation of its new parallel government for the country.

TTP has now announced its own Cabinet of Ministers, ranging from Defence to Education. Reportedly, the terror organisation has ministries for political affairs, fatwas, Intelligence, and even construction.

Moreover, TTP has divided areas in its loose control into two zones – North (includes Peshawar, Malakand, Mardan, and Gilgit-Baltistan) and South (includes Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Kohat)

Reportedly, the Ministry of Defence of the TTP is now led by a US-designated terrorist, Mufti Muzahim. The terror outfit also has a squadron of suicide bombers called the ‘Special Istishadi Force.’

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), with its supporters, has attacked defense establishments in Pakistan 148 times within a year. And the success of the Taliban in Afghanistan has given these terror attacks by TTP a boost. But the central government seems reluctant to take action against them.
