Philosopher and media expert Norbert Bolz sees Europe in great distress in the field of culture. “The sinking ship, the lost position, the defeated point – these are metaphors that seem to me to make sense in describing the state of European culture. It really only exists in the great old books, the great music from Bach to Mahler and the architectures of centuries long past.”
And further: “I mean, European culture is a sinking ship, but we should stay on board until the last moment, because there are no lifeboats.” Norbert Bolz perceives “politically correct and ‘woke’ intellectuals” as a threat to culture.
What is to be done, in Bolz’s view? “Conservatives and liberals today have the task of defending the subculture of reason and freedom against these Taliban of the West – as long as it is still possible.”
