Syrian doctor practising in Germany put on trial on torture charges

A Syrian physician must stand trial for crimes against humanity before the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt am Main. The State Protection Senate decided on Wednesday to open the main trial against Alaa M. (36) in January 2022, the court announced. The Attorney General accuses the defendant of torturing and committing murder for the Assad regime. The accused had been working as a doctor in Germany since 2015, he was arrested on June 19, 2020, and has been in pre-trial detention since then.

The indictment accuses Alaa M. of torturing prisoners who had taken part in the uprising against the regime in the military hospital and in the prison of the military intelligence service in Homs, Syria, in 2011 and 2012, and causing them severe physical and psychological damage. In addition, in one case he is alleged to have deliberately killed a prisoner by means of an injection in order to demonstrate his power and at the same time to suppress the uprising of a group of Syrians.

The German judiciary is dealing with human rights crimes in Syria in several cases. According to the principle of international law, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity can be prosecuted anywhere, regardless of where the crimes were committed.
