A Syrian care worker is alleged to have abused numerous elderly people in their homes and filmed his actions. Although he was initially suspended from work, he was later allowed to return to duty.
The 22-year-old Syrian, Abdulrahman Al Khleed Almasalmeh, is alleged to have abused numerous elderly people in need of care whilst working as a carer. As an employee of an outpatient care service in Örebro, Sweden, Almasalmeh visited the elderly in their own homes, where he filmed his actions. The Syrian is now under investigation in a total of 13 cases involving assault, mistreatment and other forms of abuse of the elderly. Almasalmeh is a migrant who came to Sweden during the 2015 migration crisis and later obtained citizenship. This was reported by the Swedish news portal Samnytt.

Almasalmeh has filmed himself on several occasions mistreating and humiliating elderly people. In one video, his victim is a 92-year-old woman. The Syrian points at the elderly woman and shouts at her: “You look like a monkey.” As he points at her, he repeats: “You look like a monkey.” Almasalmeh then swings at the woman’s face. He grabs her nose and pulls it. He then continues to insult the Swedish woman in Arabic. “You whore. I swear I’ll curse you,” he adds, continuing: “Eat shit, whore!”

In another video, Almasalmeh films himself sitting at a table in the same elderly woman’s home with a colleague, singing Arabic songs. The phrase “Allahu akbar” is also sung several times.

In another incident, also recorded by Almasalmeh, an 81-year-old man can be seen being viciously insulted and physically abused. The Syrian repeatedly called the elderly man a “son of a bitch”. He then filmed the pensioner in the shower, pouring alternately ice-cold and hot water over the elderly man. Meanwhile, the Syrian can be heard saying in Arabic: “I swear by Allah that I will make you freeze!”

Almasalmeh was arrested by the police in January 2026 and charged with several counts of abuse against 13 elderly victims. Originally there were 15, but two of the victims have since died. Curiously, according to media reports, Almasalmeh had previously come into conflict with the law on several occasions. He is said to have been convicted in two cases of assault and five cases of unlawful threats. Nevertheless, the company decided to hire Almasalmeh.

At the end of November, Almasalmeh was initially suspended with full pay whilst the police investigation was ongoing. However, he was allowed to return to work as early as January 2. In a police interview, department head Maid Prnjavorac explained that there had not been enough information regarding the status of the investigation to maintain the suspension for longer than a month. As a result, Almasalmeh was temporarily back on duty despite the allegations.
