Staff of the left-wing German daily newspaper “Tagesspiegel” arrested as human trafficker – He wanted to write a sob story about the plight of the refugees

The German blogger and journalist of the left-wing Berlin daily newspaper “Tagesspiegel” Sebastian Leber (44) was arrested at the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina – he was accompanied by a group of migrants whom he allegedly wanted to bring across the border illegally in order to later write an article about their plight.

Together with seven migrants, Leber had crossed the border illegally. However, the attempt to fabricate his own “sob story” was stopped by Croatian border police officers.

The incident had already occurred on Friday in the municipality of Cetingrad near the border with Bosnia-Herzegovina. The municipal court in Karlovac sentenced the journalist to a fine of 3600 kuna (500 euros) for illegal border crossing. The court dropped the charge of smuggling brought by the border police. The border police announced that they would appeal the first-instance verdict.
