A campaign against racism in Spain received flak because it is considered… racist. The Spanish Post Office launched “stamps for equality” on the occasion of the first anniversary of the assassination of BLM martyr, the convicted drug dealer George Floyd. But instead of being welcomed, the campaign is harshly criticised.
“The darker the stamp, the less valuable it is, so when sending it, it will be necessary to use more black stamps than white stamps. In this way, every letter and every shipment will become a reflection of the inequality created by racism,” said Correos, the Spanish public postal company, in a statement.
While this campaign was intended for good, it was not interpreted in this way by many internet users and activists, who criticized the fact that it demeaned black people. While the Spanish branch of the anti-racist association SOS Racismesupported the initiative, in which the local rapper El Chojin participated, its Madrid section lamented that it helps to conceal the structural nature of racism and to perpetuate the notion of black inferiority.
Correos said on Friday that it would not comment on the controversy, reported the American news agency Associated Press.
The curious stamp collection was aimed at raising awareness of “diversity, inclusion and equal rights”.
“At Correos, we do not stand aside in the face of racial discrimination, which is why, during European Diversity Month and on the first anniversary of George Floyd’s assassination, we are launching every day a collection of stamps that reflects an unjust and painful reality faced by millions of people every day. The darker the colour of the stamp, the more valuable it is.
“In this way, we transform each letter and each sending into a reflection of the inequality that racism creates, and one more step towards its definitive end.
“At Correos, we do not sit on the sidelines in the face of racial discrimination. This is why we are launching a stamp collection that reflects an unjust and painful reality that millions of people face every day.”
But the fact remains that the stamp with the highest value (1, 60 euro) is white, while black is associated with the lowest price (0.70 euro).
