Spain: Arrest of a “man” who had been preparing for an Islamist attack in Catalonia before planning to travel to Syria

A 32-year-old man was arrested by the Spanish security forces (Mossos) in Móra d’Ebre (Tarragona) after making radical Islamist statements. He was preparing to travel to Syria to join a jihadist organisation and, he has declared, to commit an act of violence in Catalonia before leaving.

The Mossos said in a statement on Saturday that the man, who had been under investigation since August 2021, had been charged with the offence of jihadist involvement.

The Catalan police explained that the investigation had begun when they became aware that the man had become radicalised, had changed his attitude, had become aggressive and had made statements in favour of jihadist terrorist organisations.

The detainee had also expressed his intention to commit an act of violence in Catalonia before travelling to Syria to fight for and support jihadist organisations there.

According to the Mossos, the man possessed videos with jihadist content linked to DAESH and in most cases related to “martyrdom”.

Coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Audiencia Nacional and under the supervision of the Central Investigative Court Number 3, the Mossos arrested the man on June 9.

The detainee was transferred to the court in Gandesa (Tarragona), which ordered him to be sent to the detention centre for foreigners.

In the same week, officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra and the National Police arrested a man in Vespella de Gaià (Tarragona) who was suspected of indoctrinating others with jihadist beliefs. The suspect had become radicalised and adhered to the ideological postulates of the DAESH terrorist organisation, to which he had sworn allegiance, Germán González reports.  El Mundo / Mossos d’Esquadra
