Presidential debate: Macron ‘arrogant’ but more convincing, Le Pen ‘closer to the French’

On Wednesday 20 April, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen faced off during a televised debate that attracted 16,5 million viewers. After two and a half hours of exchanges on the subjects of purchasing power, ecology and immigration, BFMTV conducted a survey of a sample of 650 people.

The results of the Opinion 2022 survey carried out by the Elabe institute showed that the President of the Republic was judged more convincing by 59 percent of those polled, compared to 39 percent for the candidate of the National Rally.

The study also stressed that Emmanuel Macron had more qualities necessary to be president of the Republic, 53 percent against 29 percent for Marine Le Pen. Some 19 percent of respondents were unable to decide between the two candidates on this question. On the other hand, the Head of State lost points by being judged by 50 percent as the most arrogant, against 16 percent for Marine Le Pen. The latter was considered by 37 percent to be the closest to the concerns of the French, compared to 34 percent for Emmanuel Macron, and the one who could change most things by 51 percent, compared to 29 percent for her opponent.

Marine Le Pen reminded Emmanuel Macron of the 600 billion euro debt, “two thirds of which have nothing to do with Covid”.

They will face each other at the ballot box on Sunday, April 24.
