“I just wanted to scare her”: Turk stabbed ex-wife eleven times – wanted to force her to wear a veil in Austria

In order to “educate” her, a Turk stabbed his ex-wife and mother of two children in the street in Vienna. In the trial, the man said that he had only wanted to “scare” the victim – with eleven knife stabs to the upper body. The woman (aged 41) only barely survived.

Today, a Turk ( aged 47) had to stand trial for attempted murder before a Viennese jury court. He had stabbed his ex-wife after a complaint against him. She had gone to a police station in Floridsdorf on January 6 because she felt threatened by the man. On her way home he ambushed her and stabbed her – she barely survived.
According to the prosecutor, the man had already “shown the Turkish woman the ropes” shortly after the wedding. The woman was no longer allowed to wear skirts and had to wear a headscarf when leaving the flat, so that she could no longer practice her profession as a dental assistant for hygienic reasons and had to work in a call centre. The couple had two children, who soon developed a fear of their father.
In 2012, the first assault against his wife occurred because she talked about divorce. There were repeated beatings and choking attacks. “Today you will see a defendant who is a prime example of a patriarch,” the prosecutor said, addressing the jury.

In 2019, the 41-year-old woman filed for divorce, but her husband did not accept. He did not move out of the shared flat until many months later, when the woman organised an emergency flat for him. Again and again, he lurked around the family, monitoring them when they left the house.

On January 6 – three years after the divorce, the woman had a new husband by her side – she left the flat with her new partner to go for a walk – where her ex-husband intercepted them. After wild threats, the couple alerted the police, but the Turk had already disappeared. However, the police reached him by phone and issued a ban on entering and approaching the apartment as well as a temporary ban on weapons.

This probably enraged the man so much that, according to the indictment, he drove home, got a knife with an eleven-centimetre blade and ambushed the woman, who had been travelling alone in the meantime, at her home address. He stabbed her eleven times, five times in the stomach alone. Shocked eyewitnesses called the police and the ambulance, which was very fortunate for the woman. A doctor who happened to be present took over first aid. The woman lost more than one and a half litres of blood. According to the forensic medical report by Christian Reiter, she would have bled to death without rapid emergency medical assistance.

The man claimed that he had only wanted to “scare” his wife. He could not remember that he had stabbed so many times, it could only have been four stabs. “But who caused the remaining seven stabs?” asked Christoph Bauer, the chairman of the jury court. Actually, he only wanted to talk to her about visitation arrangements regarding the children. “But then she smiled and told me to my face that I would never see the children again. That’s when I had to hurt her,” the accused said. “She destroyed my mental state because I did not see my children for three years.

The reason for the attack: “I wanted to educate her with it,” he replied. “I just wanted to teach her not to behave like that.” When the judge pointed out that the woman was lucky to survive and had undergone four operations, the accused said: “I want to thank the doctor who helped her.” When asked why the man, who has lived in Austria for 20 years, had not called the ambulance, he said: “I didn’t know the phone number.”

Afterwards he complained: “My wife is paid more respect than for me”. The whole thing was a plot against him, he said. When asked by the assessor if he accepted a woman’s right to divorce, he clearly said, “No!” And when asked by a juror if beatings and threats were normal for him, he said, “I’m actually against violence against women.” If convicted in line with the charges, the man faces ten to 20 years or life in prison. The trial is scheduled until 6pm. The questioning of the accused was only finished around noon, after which expert witnesses and numerous witnesses will have their say. It is therefore questionable whether a verdict will be reached on Tuesday as announced.
