“I don’t employ Muslims”: craftsman in Vesoul, France, sentenced to four months suspended prison for refusing to hire an apprentice

A man was sentenced on Thursday in the court of Vesoul (Haute-Saône) to four months suspended prison and a fine of 3,500 euros for refusing an internship to a young Muslim man.

The incident took place almost two years ago in Pesmes in the Haute-Saône department. On the witness stand on Thursday, the accused recalled the events: On that day, a young person from the child welfare service appeared in his workshop, accompanied by an educator, to apply for an internship. “I asked him his first name, he answers me Mohammed, that’s what it stands for”, assures the 52-year-old craftsman, before clarifying that he “does not employ Muslims”, reports France Bleu.

His lack of any remorse is noticeable to both the audience and the judges. The accused also allegedly insulted him during the appointment by saying, “You just have to go to your North African buddies, they have a job for you”. The accused explained: “I understand the brutality of my remarks, but I cannot be hypocritical. I could have told him that I will call him back, but I can’t do that”. The regional newspaper reports that the explanations made less and less sense and the 50-year-old finally compared Islamism to “National Socialism”. The judge finally interrupts him.
