The popularity of the princely couple formed by Harry and Meghan has plummeted. According to a survey by the YouGov institute published on Friday, March 12, the British are more likely to have a negative opinion of Prince Harry (48 percent), against 45 percent of positive opinions. This is quite a turnaround from just a few years ago when Harry beat the Queen in the popularity stakes.
Thus, is this the first time that the balance has been reversed for the Duke of Sussex. As for his wife Meghan Markle, only 31 percent of respondents have a positive opinion of the former American actress against 58 percent of negative opinion.
This decline in popularity comes after Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah Winfrey on the American channel CBS. On March 7, they explained their distance from the royal family to live in the United States. The couple then gave several reasons: media pressure from English newspapers, alleged racism from a member of the royal family and even the lack of support in the face of the supposed loneliness of Meghan Markle, which had resulted in “suicidal thoughts”.
Despite these accusations, the opinion of the British vis-à-vis the royal family has not waned. Sovereign Elizabeth II retains the lead with 80 percent support. Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton also remain very popular (75 percent). On the other hand, Prince Charles, Harry’s father, saw his popularity drop by 9 points, reaching 49 percent. At the same time, negative opinions of him climbed by 6 points (42 percent).
On the contrary, Americans saw the interview with Harry and Meghan in a different light. The confessions of the pair have sent them skyrocketing in the polls. According to Morning Consult, Prince Harry now enjoys 69 percent positive opinions. This is 23 points more than before. As for Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex gained 22 points, increasing her rate of positive opinions to 67 percent. According to the Morning Consult poll, the couple has overtaken of the Queen, who enjoys a 65 percent approval rating.
