Germany: Islamist charged after fatal knife attack on two gay men

According to the German press agency (“dpa”), the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against a suspected Islamist who allegedly killed a man from Krefeld with a knife in Dresden in autumn 2020.

The knife attack had occurred in October last year in Dresden’s old town. The suspect is said to have stabbed two tourists from North Rhine-Westphalia completely at random. The 55-year-old victim from Krefeld died shortly afterwards in hospital. His 53-year-old companion from Cologne survived seriously injured.

The suspect’s motive is believed to be hatred of homosexuals. The charges are murder, attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm.

The man had been known to the authorities for years. He had been released from juvenile detention only a few days before the knife attack.

The Dresden Higher Regional Court will decide if and when the trial will take place, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).
