Germany: Afghan man allegedly in a state of mental emergency killed by the police after he ran across the streets armed with a knife

A 53-year-old man was shot and killed during a police operation in the Sundheim district of Kehl on Sunday. This was reported by the police in the evening. The 53-year-old Afghan national is said to have been in a state of mental emergency. He was possibly armed during the operation.According to the police, a witness had contacted the police shortly after 10 am and reported that a man was seen on the street armed with a knife. The suspect is said to have then moved into a flat on Berliner Street. Several police patrols arrived on the scene and tried to make contact with the man, it is said. The 53-year-old man had repeatedly shown himself at the window armed with a knife. According to the statement, the emergency services could see that the man was injured.

A special task force (SEK) finally managed to enter the man’s flat at around 4.30 pm. A shot was fired by the task force, and the 53-year-old was hit and fatally injured. According to the police, the background is still unclear and investigations are still ongoing.

Eyewitnesses reported a hostage-taking on Facebook and elsewhere. A police spokesperson was initially unable to confirm this and referred to ongoing investigations and interrogations. Further information is expected on Monday.
