The attacker, a suspected Hamas terrorist, opened fire on passers-by with a submachine gun on Sunday, killing one Israeli and injuring three others before police could stop him. He died on the spot.
And what does German public broadcaster ZDF do? Turns the news into the opposite.
“Israel: a Palestinian shot dead” was the headline of the “heute” news programme. The public broadcaster thus did not focus on the victims, but on the assassin who had been killed by security forces. The fact that his death was preceded by an attack that he himself carried out is not reported.
According to the authorities, the attacker shot at the entrance to the Temple Mount with a rapid-fire weapon and also had a knife with him. The perpetrator is said to be an Islamic religious teacher (42). The radical Islamist Hamas welcomed the attack.
It is unclear why ZDF first reported on the assassin who was shot and only then discussed the victims. At least the editors later corrected the report, which distorted the actual events by declaring the assassin to be the victim.
A spokesperson for the station told the newspaper BILD: “In the ‘heute Xpress’ edition, ‘Israel: a Palestinian shot dead’ was first inserted. The title subsequently used in the ‘heute’ editions at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. ‘Attack in Jerusalem’ is the correct one.'”
