France: Attempted murder of two Corsican prison guards on trial – Suspect Morad Akaouch allegedly shouted “Allah Akhbar” before covering himself with a Palestinian flag

An inmate will stand trial in Bastia from this Monday for the 2018 knife attack at Borgo prison.

More than three years after the crimes, the case at Borgo prison is still as explosive as ever. This Monday, the guards of this penitentiary should be present in large numbers in the courtroom of the High Corsica court in Bastia to fill the rows of spectators during the trial that will last almost five days.

According to the indictment in the possession of Le Figaro, Morad Akaouch first attacked a first guard who was in a surveillance cabin. He then attacked a second guard who had come to the aid of his colleague. According to the testimonies of other detainees and guards, he shouted “Allah Akhbar” several times before covering his shoulders with a Palestinian flag.

All these elements support the thesis of intent, according to the prosecution. However, the knife never left the prison walls, although the prisoner was able to obtain a knife that was used on the day of the events and was never found. The two injured prison guards, who are civil plaintiffs, have suffered psychologically and physically.
